While in-depth financial and accounting audits are a standard practice in the business world, they are almost nonexistent in public elections. Should all states require comprehensive audits of their voter registration, voting, and vote tabulation processes and systems? How should such audits be conducted and who should conduct them? What should auditors be reviewing and what standards should they apply to election administration? How often should audits be conducted and how many political subdivisions within a state should be audited?
