How a Biologist, a Ranch Owner, and Thousands of Volunteers are Saving Sacred Forests on the Island of Maui
Forest Restoration is Cultural Restoration: With less than 3% remaining, Hawaiian dry forests are the most threatened ecosystems in the state of Hawaii and worldwide. The Auwahi forest, often regarded as one of the most intact and diverse dry forest areas in the state is one of best example of what our people can do for forest and cultural restoration. Since 1997, the mission of the Auwahii Project has been to restore and preserve tracts of native forests through volunteerism and donations. The Auwahi Project is led by Dr. Art Medeiros, who for over 26 years with thousands of volunteers and the generosity of of the Ulupalakua ranch have literally saved these forests and are now seeing new seedlings that have not been seen in over 100 years.
