We Are Not Winning The Iran War and Have No Path To "Win" at this Point
The war with Iran is now five weeks in, and the gap between what the Trump administration is claiming and what is actually happening on the ground grows wider by the day. Iran retains 50 to 60 percent of its ballistic missile launching capabilities and tens of thousands of operational drones. Four US aircraft were hit, two were shot down, two Black Hawk helicopters sent on a search mission were damaged, and a pilot remains missing inside Iran. Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump continue to claim the enemy has been completely degraded.

The Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Iran has demonstrated it can close it and keep it closed. The US and Israel have no effective answer. The economic consequences are already rippling through Asia and Europe, with China and Russia emerging as the two clearest winners of this conflict. Retired General Mark Hertling, responding to Trump's recent speech, reportedly told his team they were all going to die. That same week, Hegseth fired the Army's top general over personal vendettas and the general's refusal to go along with Hegseth's treatment of officers.
NATO is effectively finished. The US military continues spending $3 million missiles to shoot down $50,000 drones. No troops on the ground yet, but the specter of Karg Island looms. Trump's second term has exceeded the worst imaginable predictions, and the people who voted for him in 2024, fully informed, bear responsibility for where we are.
