Lewis E. Lehrman, a businessman who transformed a small grocery store into the Rite Aid drugstore chain, passed away at 87. He co-founded the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Lehrman served as Rite Aids president in the 1960s and 1970s, expanding the chain from 69 to 648 stores and sales from $47 million to $455 million. He later ran for New York governor in 1982, advocating for a flat income tax and tying the dollar to gold. After his political campaign, Lehrman promoted conservative causes, launched Citizens for America, and co-founded the history institute. He was survived by his wife, five children, fifteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
