John L. Burns, a seventy-year-old Gettysburg constable, defied expectations by joining Union troops during the Battle of Gettysburg, armed with his flintlock musket. Despite multiple wounds and capture, he outsmarted his captors and became a national hero. His bravery was immortalized in a famous photograph and a battlefield statue, and he even shook hands with President Abraham Lincoln. Burns legacy as the hero of Gettysburg lives on, even after his death in 1872.
