Hank Watson's Garage Hour - Cars, Trucks, Beers & Guns

909 episodes — Page 10 of 19

S11 Ep 501.22.21 (MP3): More Beer, More Snow, More Skill! There's Also Dude Food (Wings & Goulash), Shrapnel Curtain (the C-Ram), Destroyers (Up-Gunned Arleigh Burkes), Deserts (the Cleve Nat & Corral Canyon), & Will Your Subaru Save You (Get Some Skill)

More good stuff! The Garage Hour does another snowy night episode in this one, but we tromped out into the storm to Trinity Brewing for fine sips with Mr. Three-Letter Agency himself ("Regular" Bill) and FNC Spidertruck to have a beer melee (Space Force IPA, Garden of the Hops, Rasberry Kolsch, Sour Horkey, Stay Here from 2017, and Obnoxious Redhead (probably a beer)) and discuss fine shovelling (plastic versus aluminum, plus steel!). Don't worry: there's more than just a review of US military policy in the Pacific viavis the pinko peril posed by China. As promised, we've got a little ditty on whether your all-wheel drive Subaru will save you from inclement weather, and why the Subie solution isn't saving Denver from its bursting bubble.

S11 Ep 401.21.21 (MP3): Shovels, Bulldozers, Plows & Beer? Night Shovelling VS Snowball Hunting, Being Nice to the Fuzz, Plastic VS Steel Snow Blades, Jaimz's Monster, + Giant Brain, Small Stone Records, Amon Tobin & Big Gov's Electric Car Wreck

When in Rome... The Garage Hour goons got stuck between an icicle and a snowball, and a show happened. How about the mechanics of hot-rod shovels (leading edge, baby!), bowling for rioters, upping the anty on three feet of snow with a 20-foot articulated loader, plus driving with Rhythm of Snow, Larry Hagman's chopper-chase movie and a lush kind'a lost for Thanksgiving? Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Gearhead Consultancy drove a truck up OBiden's nose for the stupid all-electric car plan for the US Gov't (because you can't fix socialism).

S11 Ep 301.12.21 (MP3): Quality & Safety Matter! Reasons Not To Buy Chinese (Or Crappy) Parts, w/ Counterfeit Tires, Low-Flow Injectors, Fraudulent QC, (Intentionally) Defective Equipment & Disregard @ Life (Poison Dog Food, Anyone?), + Dumb Is Not an Excuse

Because gearheads care (here to help!): we've got some logic on why buying products from countries that don't respect intellectul property or design integrity (ahem, China's a nice example) can lead to more than a crappy iPhone charge cord (ie: real risk to you). We're the Garage Hour, so our logic pivots from performance parts - when you need to depend on hard parts, what happens if they're soft? It's in there: the adventure of shopping for made-better, #getChinesegobroke, buycotting, fake quality, counterfeit branding, fradulent controls, intentional defect, disregard for life, and respecting the goods that have earned their reputation (knockoff handbag, anyone?).

S11 Ep 201.10.21 (MP3): Braking Brakes Until They Break... Do You Brake Right? How to Avoid Potato-Chipped Rotors: Pre-Braking & the Cool Roll, Brakes on Fire & Overheating, Disc & Rotor Physics, @ Uberlate Garage Hour w/ Fluke & Flying Lotus

You may think you drive well (be honest), but do you brake properly? So many brake problems - the Garage Hour has your answers (plus more questions): Heel or toe? Slotted or drilled? OE or aftermarket? Repair or modify? Good design or good practice? There's also bits from Baer, Brembo, Stop-Tech and Stillen... The gearhead goons have that, plus engineer-approved technique for protecting your brakes, stories from testing, and a little sideshow about taking care (bribery) of the grease monkeys who take care of you.

Candy-coated Garage Hour right here, starring Green Tip and Pepe/Frank/Derailment Monster at Freedom:30 - everything from old 870s to new bolt-carrier groups, including what coatings are the best and what parts can break (there's a good piece on this at ConcealedPatrior). ...Plus tons of good details on cerakoting from the pros. It's the dynamite insights on applying Cerakote that put the weight in this episode - prep, bake, temps and types, abrasion and lasangakote - it's in there. "Is something wrong, or are you a Jeeper?" It's to the credit of the Garage Hour's fistfulls of gravity that we can sit down in a garage cold enough to hang meat with two rookie cohosts and still crush the episode... The Gearhead Consultancy gathered up Johnny the Brother and Eric the Jeeper to take an NOE run at engine swaps (and the explosions that create them), why Toyotas don't, Vise-Grips for fun and brake lines, plus binging on Golden Eye and Liquid Wrench . Additional stars of this show include grandpa's garage, canals, Jeep parts, Umberto's TV and the sandwich couch.

S10 Ep 4512.12.20 (MP3): Some Sort of Winter Detailing Special (#BecauseSlush) - Dirt Has Friends & More Isn't Better, Protect Pretty w/ Off-Season Care, How to Use Coin-Op Wash, + Freeway Fun in Your L.A. Phase (Los Feliz!), Failure, Trinity DDH-45 & Slaughtercat

Why yes, we digress. It's in there (this time - we promise) with everything from a murderous feline to tow truck technique, plus seasons in Chicago, the 2020 Egg Nog GP, and Ken Andrews of the band Failure. While we're at it, there's actually a topic, too - detailing in the off-season because you care about how you look during the on-season. Winter is mean. Keep your rig clean even it it's not pretty, because little dings get big when you neglect them. Torn mats, harbored moisture, cracked clearcoats, destroyed fabrics - winter can make them all worse. You're a gearhead - do it right.

Don't ruin the giving season with gift cards and missed targets. Scratch that itch - what's that line from Dirty Harry? "I gots to know!" The Gearhead Consultancy is fueled by the geek brain, always connecting the dots, pulling the threads, and more often than not, poking da' bears. We got a truckload of itches scratched and laid out some questions about why the mask fear-pressure freakout ain't making sense at a nuts-and-bolts level. Don't box yourself in with conventional logic, because it's usually wrong. This is an experimental intellegental - spitballing the whosits and debating the whatnots about the Chinese bat plague.

The Gearhead Consultancy would like to assist you in your efforts to find a good used car. More importantly, we're geeks and we're here to help, specifically help you make hay with a $500 pony. This isn't rocket-surgery, kids, it's a few rules like working from the cheapest to most expensive parts, knowing the platform's faults, and knowing when to fix and when to live with it. We'll walk you through a litany of easy fixes that looked like disasters (electrical gremlins - the dreaded power suck, bad brake lights, stupid switches and vaporized valve-cover gaskets). Things you can do yourself: ask a geek, lurk the forums (full of geeks), learn the "knowns" (become a geek).

Too much good stuff. The Garage Hour goons got together for an hour of cars, trucks, beers and guns at F:30 in Colorado, and good talk happened all over the place. Joined by Distraction Monster, the F.N.B., Mr. Chungus, Butters, Arson, the Russian, with a late appearance by Green Tip and some wild asses, Hostus Maximus tries to get a rope around this episode and almost pulls it off. Good stuff may include: silencers, Blackwater shotguns (the AR-style Century 12), Trinity's "Stay Here" stout (three years on-tap), "Typhoon of Steel" (read it), riot balls or pepper balls, and the advent of speciological appropriation! #becausegearhead

The much-requested followup to our September used-car what-the-Hell episode - it's Used Cars 101. Sadly, the Gearhead Consultancy needed about eight hours to cover all the bases on what to look for when buying something used for yourself, but there was time to hit the high points. We run down a checkoff list of areas to eyebang, like body, suspension, state-of-wear, overall condition, starting and running, plus traps and tricks set by flippers. Justin case, bring a geek.

We run down a checkoff list of areas to eyebang, like body, suspension, state-of-wear, overall condition, starting and running, plus traps and tricks set by flippers. Justin case, bring a geek.

S10 Ep 3410.02.20 (MP3): Afternoon @ Trinity Brewing Co.: Geek-Strength Sipping & Local Beer-Fan Vibes, + New Beers, Owning the Rep, Legacy Maintenance, Can Shortages, Home Brewers, Cage the Yeast, & Good Knife Carma (Found on Road Awesome)

We're here: It's Colorado time. Garage Hour goons finally found a free hour (with all the minutes next to each other) to chat beer at Trinity, and it's siptastic. Hostus Maximus Justin Fort even pinned down Matt Dettmann, the new captain of this beermaking cornerstone, and then it was trube this and yeast that, with Trinity's XToberfest, Wrath of God, Dark Passenger, and guest appearances by Inda Kunindra (YOU spell it), Quadrangle and The Compressor. Because the Gearhead Consultancy is always looking out for you (and what you did wrong), there's also getting beer to India (not just for IPAs) and asking pro brewers and other geeks for help. Called it.

S10 Ep 3309.29.20 (MP3): Late Night @ the Gun Store? The Fall Firearm Freakout is Still a Thing, w/ First-Time Buyers & New Shooters, 2A Comprehension, Uninformed VS Unprepared, LARP-Proofing, + Give a Shoot - Don't Pollute!

2020 hindsight is still coming to get you, but the Garage Hour goons are in the best place to catch it on the back foot - a gun store in Colordo. The 2A is back and we're here to help, with Green Tip, the Russian, Wolf, and special guest The Compressor. When the die-down won't lie down and die - it's a more legitimate second wave than the Chinese bat plague ever managed... There's also the usual awesomeness: mixing concrete (not with your hands, Marc), recalling Gov. Know-It-All, the Mask-Fart rule, putting your debris in the dumpster, and why it's stupid to shoot your TV unless you're watching at home.

So much good (hillclimb) stuff! The Garage Hour supported this year's PPIHC as a race official and, like usual, lending a helping hand also provided one of the best seats in the house for this iconic American race. Drivers, racecars, crashes, a lot of stunningly powerful hillclimb cars (OE-based and homebrew specials) and a little bit of weather, everything from ethanol to diesel and race-gas by the gallon - so much good race. This might be one of the cleanest PPIHCs in decades - few crashes, with legit winners and mind-blowing car-control, and the Garage Hour goons were there.

#Becauseracecar! It's hillclimbing season (when isn't it?) and the PPIHC is running its chop fluey-addled rescheduled race. It's a little weird being fan-free ('cause kung flu), but the racers are here to race - folks like Dallenbach, Vahsholtz, Zwart, Yoshihara, Donahue, Schranz and more are running everything like a carbon-fiber Z, JZ'd BR-Z, open-wheel this and 50-year old that, Camaros and Mustangs, factory Acuras, and Porsches by the pound. Power is thick: V8s from the junkyard, blown everything, twin-turbo'd straight-six Buicks and VQs, with diesel power, ethanol power and even - heh - nine-volt power. Jump on board - Hostus Maximus Justin Fort is trackside and grabs as much as iPhonely possible, which turns out to be tons of surprsingly good audio. Now you go do something fast and awesome.
