S02-Frequently Asked Friday 18: What's a Paradigm Shift?
"We don't see the world as it is, we see it as we are." ~Anais Nin When people talk about shifting their paradigm it might sound corny, or perhaps trendy, or both. The importance of shifting one's paradigm particularly when it comes to self-imposed limitations or limiting beliefs can not be overstated. In fact, Einstein once said you can't solve a problem using the same level of thinking that created the problem and that is precisely the value of a paradigm shift. Martin provides the example of how The Habit Factor, itself, by exploring the subject of HABIT very deeply helped to shift people's paradigms about habit. And in particular, how habit helps to drive goal achievement. He even shares the example of Apple's "Think Different" campaign which was their way to underscore Apple's belief that a computer isn't a computer (as we know it) but rather an extension of our personality, how we work and even in many ways could be viewed as art. Martin also recounts a great story, originally shared by the late Dr. Stephen Covey, that provides a dramatic example of a powerful a paradigm shift can be! The key is to understand that paradigms are forged by our values, past experiences and our habitual thinking and knowing that, we have the capacity to shift them if we're willing. S02-Mind Bullet: Success in Common Hours
"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." Henry David Thoreau In this episode Martin revisits this quote by the famous essayist — a quote that sent him on a journey of personal discovery and analysis about the enigma that is "success". In this famous quote Henry David Thoreau points out with great assurance that, "he WILL meet with a success in common hours". Notice that HDT doesn't say he "might" or that he "could" but that he "WILL"! After years of analysis and reaffirming this statement, Martin has settled on much the same truth. That success is not a destination but a realization along the journey and is experienced as one pursues their ideal future confidently. It seems that it is only when one advances confidently toward their dreams and works hard realize the life that they have imaged that the improbable happens — that they are met with the feeling of success in "common" hours. HDT's formula is crystal clear: 1) have an ideal vision, a dream to pursue 2) work hard to achieve it 3) move confidently every day toward it When you can check off those three boxes each and every day you will meet with a success in common hours. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 18: "Getting To!"
"As long as you are above ground, these are ALL things you 'Get to do!'" How we talk to ourselves determines a vast majority of what we do and do not do. The language that we use often creates resistance. So, then what happens? Well, we know what we need to do but still don't do it. What are the chances that some of that resistance is simply tied to the language that we use? In this episode Martin begins by asking you to imagine you both work at the same company and he get to "tell you what you have to do". Doesn't sound too pleasant does it? Yet, many of use will go through each day saying that exact statement to ourselves, things like; "I have to pay my bills". "I have to go to the gym." "I have to get the car washed." "I have to go to school" etc. A subtle and significant shift takes place when we revisit our language and change the way we talk to ourselves. Simply saying, "I get to pay my bills." "I get to go to the gym" etc. will reduced our reluctance to do them! What are you telling yourself "you have to do" and how easily can you make that shift? S02-Frequently Asked Friday 17: Subconscious vs the Superconscious
"There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will, the solution comes to you and you don't know how or why.” ~Albert Einstein What is the difference between the superconscious and the subconscious? When a problem is well defined it seems that when we are relaxed, and in a subconscious, habitual state that we make that "leap in consciousness" that Einstein talks about. Einstein calls it a "leap" in consciousness and many theorize that is exactly what it is. But the "how" and the "why" may in fact be related to the subconscious and in particular HABIT. Many personal development greats like Brian Tracy and Napoleon Hill (video link below) have also termed this the "God-Mind" and "Infinite Intelligence". Whatever you call it, it's a powerful aspect to one's creativity and it appears to be most often fostered when we are performing habitual activities such as; brushing our teeth, showering, shaving, driving, etc. In this episode Martin uses the "three-layer cake" analogy and shares his experience and insights regarding the matter. There is a power above and behind us and we are the channels (conduit) of its communication." ~Emerson Check out this short FAF episode... and SUBSCRIBE now to get these episodes automatically on your device! ________________ How's your habit tracking going? S02-Mind Bullet: Acres of Diamonds
A diamond in the rough doesn't look like a diamond and that's an important point to remember. In this episode Martin revisits a timeless classic from the personal development archives, "Acres of Diamonds" by Russell Conwell. Russell Conwell shares the story of an African farmer who becomes excited about the prospect of finding a fortune of diamonds elsewhere. He hurriedly sells his farmland and heads out to seek his treasure. After years of searching, dejected, despondent and alone, he ultimately kills drowns himself. The moral to the story is timeless, that our real fortunes lie within. That we already have a fortune within our selves as long as we are willing to take the time to refine our skills and character. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 17: The Power of Quadrant #2!
"The key is tricking yourself to move quadrant two items to quadrant one whenever possible." This episode Martin revisits Stephen Covey's classic Effectiveness or Time Management Grid. Many of us become great at "getting stuff done" (GTD) the only challenge is that often it's NOT the the important stuff that, in the long run, will make us feel content, accomplished and like we've lived a life that was worth living. All too often that "stuff" resides in quadrant one as Dr. Covey points out yet, it's quadrant #2 as Covey defines it, where things the important but not urgent items are that have the most value to us. What sort of things can be found in quadrant #2? -Planning and strategy -Setting a vision -Exercising -Reading to your children -Vocation -Prevention -Long-Term Goals Martin explores this idea that within his latest book, The Pressure Paradox™ one of the underlying themes was the importance to creating a sense of urgency (pressure) and how a key to being more effective is moving the those long-term goals into quadrant 1. For instance, the book and even the app as well as goals like the Ironman and catalina classic were all quadrant #2 items. And, it was via the use of The Habit Factor that helped move those key behaviors (habits) into quadrant #1. Check it out — listen to today's episode and see if you can't identify the important quadrant #2 items in your life and make sure you are tracking the important habits that will help you achieve your goals! S02-Frequently Asked Friday 16: "Should I Worry?"
"Worrying is like paying interest on a loan that may never come due." But, is there really no value in worrying? It's a great question and one worth considering. What is the value of worry? Why have we been given this capacity to worry? It turns out that worry can be damaging and a great waste of time and energy. However, there are many instances where worry serves a tremendous purpose; to get us off our butts— to take action! So how do you know which type of worrying is beneficial? There are essentially two types of worry; things you can influence and control and things that you can not. To worry about the weather next week is likely a waste of time and energy. However, when you worry about things that you can influence and it forces you to think and act resourcefully then the worry provides great value. Examine your own worry patterns; when and where you place your time, energy and attention particularly when it comes to things beyond your sphere of influence. The subject than reminds Martin about the old, “Serenity Prayer” that goes something like, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things i can not change. The courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. There is a reason that is called the serenity prayer— knowing the difference helps one avoid worthless worry and at the same time can bring great peace and serenity. After all, why pay interest on a loan that may never come due? S02-Mind Bullet: The Power of Conditioning
"Comfort is the great enemy of success." ~Brian Tracy In this episode Martin explores the upside and the downside of becoming conditioned. In any environment over time (humans) become conditioned but it isn't just the environment that we become conditioned to. We are conditioned to our diets, to the amount of money we earn, to our friendship, professional and social circle. In fact, we are conditioned to our thinking (habituated) about things like how much money we can make, how strong we are, what we are good and bad at (our self-concept), etc. The relationship between being "conditioned" and habit is hard to avoid and in psychology it's directly tied to habit formation; think Pavlov's dog, stimulus and response. It's difficult to imagine any person who is habituated to a "thing" and not at the same time conditioned to it. The key is knowing that conditioning (all forms) can serve us as much as harm us— to use the power of conditioning to get stronger— physically, mentally and even emotionally. Therefore it's essential to continually test new boundaries and trust what was once uncomfortable will become comfortable. Check out this episode and be sure to share this Mind Bullet Wednesday! S02-Mind Bullet Monday 16: Permission Granted!
"Creativity takes courage." ~Henri Matisss This episode may be the perfect follow-up to last Friday's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF), "What if I fail?" With the thought of "failure" comes a lot of resistance that prevents many of us from ever getting started. Similarly, when a person is considering taking on any creative endeavor, they often will unknowingly seek permission to begin— as though someone is going to grant them that ability. What happens when you give yourself permission to: -Take the first step -Start that company -Write that book -Develop that app -Start that blog -Fail (at anything), etc. Martin explores this idea that we (YOU) don't need permission from anyone to begin your creative project/endeavor NOW and recognizes that had he sought permission to write The Habit Factor® or The Pressure Paradox™ or develop his apps, he could have been waiting a lifetime. The interesting thing is not only was nobody going to grant him permission but the impact that the book and app have had on thousands of people around the world would have never come to pass. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 15: "What If I Fail?"
Martin begins this episode by talking about his 13 year old daughter and her recent run for student council president. His first thought... "Oh no! What if she loses!" And, then he silently figures he'd better prepare a consolation speech for her. The encounter got him thinking though about a few things. First, how brave she was (only two other candidates -girls- were willing to run) and that somewhere in her mind (perhaps) she had to be accepting of the idea of failure— not winning the election. Considering the value of being willing to fail further, Martin mentions that in a prior episode he spoke about the idea, what would you do if you knew you could NOT fail. However, now, thinking about this event, he recognizes that there may be even more power in accepting the possibility of failure and proceeding anyway. In fact, it's the acceptance of failure not the rejection that helps to remove the resistance and may actually facilitate getting on started on ANY journey— knowing that they might fail but doing whatever they can to prevent it from happening. Taking a queue from top athletes the idea of releasing any expectations of the outcome; whether it's a swing of a tennis racquet, a shot going through the basketball hoop or a golf shot, accepting the possibility of failure allows one to improve and succeed! After all, if failure is the pathway to success then perhaps it isn't about "not failing" as much as it is about being willing to fail! S02-Mind Bullet: The Value of Listening
"Being listened to feels so much like being loved people can hardly tell the difference." ~David Augsberg "I never learned anything while I was talking." ~Larry King The real value of listening may be beyond measure. Countless proverbs proclaim the value of this virtue but how many of us can say we are good listeners? How many of us can say we've developed the listening habit? Martin shares his struggles with the art of listening and how it was the "listening is like love" quote referenced above that led him on his journey to "revisit" the art and try to become a better listener. Martin recalls an entrepreneur using The Habit Factor app as a as a way to strengthen his listening habit and recommends you give it a try if this episode resonates with you. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 15: The Law of Forced Efficiency
"There is never enough time to do everything and there is always enough time to do the most important things." ~Brian Tracy The Law of Forced Efficiency tells us that we can NEVER use the excuse that we don't have enough time to achieve our goals. Today's episode highlights a profound lesson and "law" shared by the great Brian Tracy in his Psychology of Achievement. By separating and prioritizing your habit list versus your To-Do list you focus on the habits (recurring behaviors) that will help you achieve your goal. Plan. Act. Record and Reassess. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 14: How to Get and Stay Motivated
Motivation is often fleeting and while it's important not to wait for motivation to strike there are a few mindsets that help getting and staying motivated easier. In this episode, Martin reviews these strategies and shares his experience about what has helped when motivation was lacking. A precept is understanding the critical importance of getting started. In order to give yourself a shot you must begin... sounds obvious but many never take that first step. Next, making your vision as vivid and compelling as possible (prior episode) will help greatly! Another key idea is self-efficacy which is the ability to create a desired result which creates momentum. This is best achieved when one follows The Habit Factor's PARR methodology; Planning, Acting, Recording and Reassessing. It helps to regard achievement as a process rather than a single event. This facilitates the most essential ingredient and perhaps a surprise one to staying motivated, patience. S02-Mind Bullet : Vision: Everything Is Created Twice
Everything is created twice... Where there is no vision the people perish. ~Proverbs If success can be defined as "creating your ideal future" then it's essential to know what your ideal future looks like. Are you able to clearly articulate that vision. If you close your eyes now, can you envision what it might look like three or five years out? "Your imagination is your preview to life's coming attractions." Albert Einstein Unfortunately, out of one hundred people it's likely that less than ten will take the time to really think through and envision their ideal future. Fewer still will write it out! Martin suggests that you identify all the major categories of your life: professional, health, family, relationships, mind, spiritual, adventure, recreation and where you will live and detail each as a vivid and descriptive paragraph. A Chinese proverb says, "Vision without execution is a day dream and execution without vision is a nightmare." Once a compelling vision is crafted you'll be "pulled" by it as Steve Jobs once explained and you can then identify what habit will help to make the vision a reality. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 14: The Company You Keep
"I'm an overnight success, it just took twenty years." We tend to overestimate what we can accomplish in the short term and under estimate what we can achieve in the long run. Today's episode is about how long it takes to really make any entrepreneurial endeavor "stick". That is, whether it's a book, an app, a podcast or any business endeavor, if it's something you want to succeed you'd better be willing to invest years of time, effort and personal energy. To kick off the episode Martin first shares a quote by the late, great Steve Jobs regarding just how hard it is to create a successful company and ultimately why so many people quit. It's hard. It's very, very hard and you have to be persistent. Martin shares how he fully underestimated the amount of time it would take and now, 20+ years later, it is still an active company and partnership. When you think about it, the most successful companies have been around dozens and some even over a hundred years. It seems the most successful companies are even generational. So, it's important to know that when you start something you are planting a seed that will need consistent care and feeding for years to come. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 13: How Can I Get Unstuck?
Feeling stuck? The good news is everyone has felt this way before and it's not only common, it's a significant sign of pending growth. In this episode, Martin tackles a few key mindsets around the idea of feeling "stuck" and how one can best grapple with the feeling. A great starting point is releasing any resistance to the feeling and then enjoying and using the awareness to ask key questions like; "Where do I want to go? and, "What am I afraid of?" Knowing that all behavior is primarily driven by the desire to avoid fear or gain pleasure that question is likely to provide light on what should be your next steps and WHY you may not be taking them. S02-Mind Bullet : Who's To Blame?
Who is to blame when things go wrong? Yes... this is a Mind Bullet on a Wednesday. (you are not crazy). Martin starts this episode with a bit of a chuckle as the guest for this episode had to reschedule at the last minute leaving him with a Wednesday Mind Bullet (regular listeners know that Wednesdays are reserved for interviews). So this last minute shift in plans creates a learning moment. In life people will often drop the ball - not follow through, etc. It's very easy to fall into the blame-game trap. To point fingers and absolve oneself of responsibility. Martin shares a quick story about a Facebook post from an entrepreneur who was ranting about "people not doing the job right in the first place" and "wasting half my day fixing their mistakes." The question is; Who is really responsible? Who is really to blame? It turns out taking responsibility ends up providing a host of benefits including freedom and ultimately saves us from needlessly wasting energy. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 13: Emotive Decision Making
What is the value of emotion? How well do you listen to your emotions when it comes to all of your decisions— particularly when "logic" is saying one thing and your gut is saying another. In today's episode Martin asks the listener to reflect upon some of their most positive growth experiences and ask if they were "logic-based" decisions or if they followed their gut. Much of our decision making is done via habit and we'll even disguise our fear many times as "logic". While logic is a powerful gift we should leverage, refine and be grateful for, it can keep us bound, unsure and even afraid at times from taking action. "If I thought logically about that hike or the Catalina paddle there is no way either of them would've happened yet they were both priceless experiences!" Martin speculates that great leaps of personal growth are often tied to these emotive decisions where logic was doing its best to steer us in a different direction. From this episode Martin wants to know... 1) Have you shared the same experience when you've gone against "Logic"? 2) What happens if you follow your gut and it's based upon EGO instead? 3) Where does that heart-mind, intuitive thought and gut feeling come from? 4) What do you do to strengthen the the heart-mind and gut feeling for larger decisions 5) Can you take a life "inventory" of gut decisions (absent the ego) and see how it's steered you on a positive path of personal growth? S02-Frequently Asked Friday 12: What Are The Three Key Daily Habits?
This week's question comes to us via Quora.com and Martin reads/shares his response to the question and adds a little color commentary along the way. Consistent to theme, Martin shies away from the idea that there are just 3 Daily habits and redirects the quora.com user toward a better understanding of HABIT (singular). This way, the user is empowered to craft intentionally the habits that will help them achieve their goals and desires rather than being constrained by 2 or 3 habits that another person might prescribe! Knowing that the "answer" is about understanding the nature of HABIT is akin to "teaching a man to fish" vs. feeding him a fish. S02-INT12: Glenn R. Fox: How Gratitude is the Game-Changer
"The word is out... gratitude has incredible benefits." ~Glenn Fox In this entertaining interview, Glenn covers his journey toward graduate school and beyond. Citing stories of getting his top-level mechanics degree and his love of cars and, how being a mechanic served much of his mindfulness development. His eclectic background combined with an element of chance ultimately leads Glenn to find a great mentor who recommendeds that he study an emerging field, "affective neuroscience". Glenn shares wonderful insights and studies related to neuroscience and gratitude and how for him he must "win the home field" — a great metaphor to help him remember it's really about having healthy, quality relationships —that foster success. Glenn R. Fox earned his PhD from USC’s Neuroscience Graduate Program and his extensive research regarding gratitude is widely published. Just some of what Martin and Glenn cover: -How across nearly all religions and philosophies Glenn has noticed that gratitude is a fundamental theme -How mindfulness and gratitude are practices -How emotion can help us to narrow the range of options -How the brain process emotion -How emotion influences our decisions and behaviors -How we might better understand the value of emotions to make better decisions -His influences like Antonio Damasio and Pema Chodron even, -Why Glenn sees envy as a positive emotion And much more... The point is emotion narrows the decisions we can make so we're not just frozen... it's useful and helps us make decisions — it probably exists for a reason. Subscribe Don't miss a single episode. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 12: Life Is Half Spent Before One Knows What It Is
What does that French proverb mean to you? What is life that when it's half spent it becomes clear? Or, is it really just an observation that it takes us half our life to realize what is most important to us? Martin kicks off this episode sharing an observation about this great proverb via the lens of The Habit Factor but later observes it could be a number of things including the ephemerality of it all! WHAT DO YOU THINK IT MEANS? Martin wraps up this quick mind bullet with that very question and asks you to chime in and share your thoughts on facebook.com/thehabitfactor or twitter @thehabitfactor.com If you had to guess what would you say? ***NEW Giveaway! S02-Frequently Asked Friday 11: What is success if you don't know your main goal in life?
This question comes via Quora.com and Martin has a link at the bottom to the entire post/response (partially posted here). In this episode Martin reads his response and adds a little color along the way shares his experience teaching "Success Skills" for C.L.A.S.S. Corporate Leaders Advocating Success Skills (volunteer instructor for Junior Achievement) at some of San Diego's more impoverished neighborhoods. Martin changes the definition of "success" as provided by the curriculum and teaches a slightly different definition. Then he shares some thoughts about just what the OPPOSITE of success might be if it isn't failure. MG's answer on quora.com: I really like this question. From my experience I've found "success" to be a very enigmatic concept/subject which I'm sure explains why so many of us struggle with it. The SHORT ANSWER to your question: It is going to be difficult if not impossible, (as evidenced by your question) to find success without a desireable destination, target or goal. So, do you have any feel for What your ideal future looks like? Simply reverse engineer any great "success" and you will notice they know at the very least or, knew what their target was/what they were going after. That doesn't mean they hit it, it just means they had a direction to aim for (fostering positive action and habits). Prolonged aimlessness can be very problematic. Try this: Ask 10 people if they want to be a "success". My guess is all 10 will say "YES". Then, ask those same 10 people to DEFINE what "success" means to them... S02-Mind Bullet Monday 11: Be Like Ben
"I hope, therefore, thatsome of my descendants mayfollow the example and reap the benefit." ~BenjaminFranklinWhen it comes to personaldevelopment very few know that the great grandfather or the great, great grandfather of PD isBenjamin Franklin. It's hard to find a moreprolific American than Benjamin Franklin yet most people don't knowthat at a young age Ben believed himself to be abrasive, brash andargumentative and wrote about this in hisautobiography. He outlined thirteen virtues hehoped to assume as he matured. He was determined to start trackingeach virtue, one per week, and would move to the next virtuerotating through all thirteen throughout the course of eachyear.1. Temperance.2. Silence.3. Order.4. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 10: Emotions & Habits
"How can emotions(positive or negative) help you develop habits to bring success inyour endeavors? This episode starts with Martinaddressing the negative relationship first; illustrating how theemotion of ANGER often triggers all sorts of habitualbehaviors. In fact, a great Epictetus quotenotes this: "Whenever you are angry, be assured that it is not onlya present evil, but that you have increased a habit."When you consider how you mightreact when you are really angry you may even be able to trace muchof your behavior back to your parents and how they reacted whenthey were angryWhen it comes to "success" andour goals the beauty is that the inverse is true as well. Channeledpositively and intentionally our emotions can guide our behaviorsand habits. Martin shares how for example, the REGRET emotion wasthe "birthplace" for The Habit Factor (book, app, podcast, etc— allproduced via behaviors/habits guided by emotion.By asking himself,"What would I most regret not achieving or experiencingif I died tomorrow?"That question conjured all sortsof emotions that helped to produce clarity of purpose and directionwhich led to his first big goal, the Catalina Classic paddle boardrace— a 32 mile open ocean paddle from Catalina island to Manhattanpier.A key is knowing that we actuallyhave the power to select, guide and craft our emotions to serve anddrive our most important goals. In fact, we can even choose ouremotions throughout the day to reinforce the importantbehaviors/habits we're trying to forge to improve ourcharacter!Check out this short episodenow...________________**NEW WeeklyGiveaway! Nobody has more than twenty-four hours, yet some people get far ahead of others."If everyone requires eight hours of sleep to be healthy and most of us have jobs that require at least eight hours of work, it's what you do with the 'other' eight that will make all the difference for your future..." Martin kicks off this episode sharing an observation Napoleon Hill made decades ago— how you use your "other" eight hours of your 24 hours will be make all the difference in your future results and paves the way for your "success"!How are you using the "other" eight? If success is creating your ideal future, then what you study, the skills and habits you develop in those other eight hours become essential to help you craft your ideal future.Sadly, it appears most people waste those other eight hours on frivolous activities. Certainly, we all need rest and recreation but those other eight hours are the key — the path to a brighter, better future. What would happen if you devoted just 15 minutes (of the other eight) consistently?Since you probably plan on living another two or three years, devoting just 15 minutes a day, 5 times a week studying ANY skill or trade will likely make you an expert or put you very close to expertise and far ahead of others. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 08: How to Quit A BAD Habit
"It's crazy... so many habit apps allow you to track bad habits. Please, please, do not ever track BAD HABITS you're just putting attention and focus on what you do NOT want!""To eliminate a bad habit replace it with a good one." Martin begins this episode by sharing how the environment is the first line of defense (or maybe even offense) when trying to kill a BAD Habit. Modifying your environment helps you to remove the common triggers and allows you to create impediments to executing the behavior you are trying to avoid.Next, Martin shares a famous quote by a Dutch Renaissance Theologian, Desiderius Erasmus who said, "A nail is driven out by a nail, habit is replaced by a habit." Replacement is the key to elimination, NOT just removing the bad behavior... "that creates a vacuum!"Finally, the listener is encouraged to revisit a prior episode "3 Bad Habit Busting Tips" and in that episode— as here, Martin revisits the "3 Ments" when it comes to killing a bad habit; environment, replacement and finally experiment.Check out this short episode now...________________**NEW Weekly Giveaway! S02-Mind Bullet Monday 08: Are You Really Committed?
"There is a HUGE difference between being interested versus being committed to an outcome or goal. For most people, if they are being honest with themselves, they are only interested..." Martin kicks off this episode with a personal realization and a confession. Realizing that earlier in the prior month he said to himself, "I'm going to run 35 miles this month."So, what was the problem?Well, that was ALL it was... just talk! There was NO PLAN and there was really no action. It was a "nice to have" but certainly not a commitment! To be committed— truly committed is the first step for goals that are meaningful.Talking about a goal or even having a vision of achieving a goal is worth very little without backing it up with sincere commitment. So, how do you know what you have sincere commitment? Easy. — Is there a PLAN?— Is there consistent action? Have the core behaviors/habits been identified?— Are you TRACKING these behaviors? If you are not tracking your progress you are not serious about your goal.— Be sure to Reassess - your strategy, your results and be flexible in your approach!"I had no plan, I took limited action and I really wasn't committed to tracking or even assessing any progress along the way. It was just talk...."Near the end of the episode Martin shares an old parable about the hen and the pig who decide to open a restaurant together as equal partners. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 07: Why Are Goals So Important?
"In life, goals are not optional." #thehabitfactor"The first thing goals do is give you direction. Direction provides a sense of purpose, and purpose leads to funny things like happiness and contentment." This show kicks off with Martin sharing a story about a woman who approached him after a workshop simply to say, "Thank you! I used to HATE the idea of goals!" She was frustrated! She really disliked the thought of goals because it reminded her of a nagging husband who insisted she set some goals that included "losing weight."This lady was so relieved to learn that by using The Habit Factor process, she could place her attention and focus on just a few, recurring behaviors (habits) instead of the goal itself. Then, Martin reviews The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. methodology and how it stacks up against the popularized Cue, Routine, Reward method. He shares how the P.A.R.R. methodology is forward looking while Cue Routine Reward is oriented toward assessing previous behaviors. Cue, Routine, Reward doesn't take into account simple and critical components of habit building, such as Recording (tracking), Reassessment, or, really, a defined process for planning. S02-INT07: Rick Sessinghaus, The Path to Peak Performance in Golf & Life
"If we're focused, confident and relaxed we have a much better opportunity to execute what we want...""We know that our behaviors and our habits lead to our results..." A former pro golfer, Rick earned his doctorate in Applied Sports Psychology. He is the author of Golf: The Ultimate Mind Game and is former editor of Golf Tips magazine.A high school football injury directed Rick toward the sport of golf, and what he's learned since has truly been life-altering.In a competitive playoff for the right to join his college golf team as a walk-on, as he describes it, he "choked" under pressure. It was that "failure" that became a formative life experience and sent Rick toward the study of peak performance strategies.Today Rick is a sought-after peak-performance coach who trains aspiring professionals and helps corporate executives apply his many strategies and insights on peak performance, leadership and teamwork. In this episode, Rick shares:How to re-write your story to serve your ambitionsPhysiological influences of performanceWhy and how love (passion) is a critical component for peak performance His strategy for the golf-course "workshop" with executive teams! How his workshop reveals so much about decision making, leadership and communication How he applies The Habit Factor in his training to carry his clients beyond just the mental game, and how that was a breakthroughHow he defines "success"How appreciating your life's "roles" helps you create greater attention and mindfulness How to get a little better every dayAnd, so much more...“It's the exercise and the process behind it -- how did they come to the decisions as a team and what happens when someone played poorly? Did they react and judge them?"Why could I not perform under the pressure, when it mattered most. Yet, when I put some of those mental and emotional skills and trained them, I was able to perform at a high level afterwards..." “I'm a BIG believer that leadership starts with the individual, not with the team. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 07: The Highest Level of Maturity
If happiness is, in large part, tied to the quality of our relationships, this episode is a MUST Listen..."This is how and where the championships are won and the bridges are built..." Unfortunately, most people grow up believing that independence is the highest form of maturity.Martin shares some of his personal experience and the big, ah-ha in reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Dr. Stephen Covey points out that it is interdependence and not independence that is the highest form a maturity.Further, Covey shares that the most troubled relationships tend to break down, whether it's a team, company or in a personal setting, when the FIRST THREE HABITS (he calls, "the personal victory") are not first honored and addressed. Those habits are: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First! In fact, it's those first three habits that build the foundation and help to foster a strong, capable and long-lasting, interdependent relationship.Check it out now.... hear and share this Mind Bullet Monday. ***NEW Giveaway! S02-Frequently Asked Friday 06: What Is The Habit Factor?
"All men's natures are alike — it's their habits that carry them far apart." ~Confucius "It makes no small difference to be habituated this way or that way from childhood; rather, it makes ALL the difference." ~Aristotle This show kicks off with Martin suggesting that this should have been the very first Frequently Asked Friday episode. Then he shares how it's nearly impossible to truly encapsulate ALL there is to understand about The Habit Factor in just a few minutes. Martin reviews the foundation and the philosophy upon which The Habit Factor is built. He discusses how so many of the great minds throughout history, such as Aristotle, Confucius and even Benjamin Franklin, have arrived at a very similar conclusion regarding HABIT. Martin then shares an important "discovery" from Think & Grow Rich. In fact, it's something that was left out of Think & Grow Rich: The Law of Cosmic Habit Force (prior episode -link) Then he touches on an important idea about goal achievement and "success" that, according to so many "experts," is heavily influenced by our subconscious mind. Where do your habits reside? Finally, Martin explains one of the most powerful facets of The Habit Factor: Powerful philosophy aside, it provides users a proven, step-by-step process to help anyone achieve their goals much more quickly. It turns out to be a very short "retirement" that lasts only about 3 weeks...“I think doing a business for money is absolutely the wrong motivation and will actually lead to a lot of challenges. “The only thing you have to do to be successful is to be better than just about everyone else at just one thing. It's simple but it's not easy." ~Jon CarderAt just 26, Jon Carder was featured on the cover of Fortune Small Business magazine (link) wearing just board shorts and holding a surfboard as the sun set with the title, "Time to Sell?" S02-Mind Bullet Monday 06: The Power of the Mind
"There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way." ~Buddhist ProverbWhile happiness, as the Buddhist proverb goes, can and should be a choice (most often) there is no doubt our present circumstances and events have great influence upon our current level of happiness. In fact, what happens more often than not is that we will assign and craft stories about events (in the present) and then layer on our own subjective and speculative implications (stories) about how that event will influence our future. Interestingly, these future stories (that WE are always, habitually creating at will) in turn than influence our present level of happiness. The question becomes, do we have the power to change the story, our attention and focus?Martin touches on the R.A.S.; the Reticular Activation System, a part of the brain helps selectively guide our focus, to see and find those things that we are seeking OR patterns we've seen in the past. "We tend to see what we put our focus upon... If that future story or image projection is not what we would like to see we actually get to change it." In fact, you might argue that becomes a core responsibility in our life. Martin recounts Jobs' biography by Walter Isaacson, simply titled, Steve Jobs. In the book, Jobs is famous for something Isaacson coined as his "reality distortion field". This reflected Jobs unrelenting ambition to distort "reality" and current information and events into something that would ultimately serve his imagination and his goals. Can we not do this? Martin challenges the listener to try to alter their focus and to craft a story about a positive, hopeful and optimistic future despite any negative current events or circumstances. And, to notice how that impacts your present level of happiness!Listen now to the latest Mind Bullet Monday and don't miss a single episode— It's easy to SUBSCRIBE and to have each episode sent to you automatically. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 05: Should I Announce My Goals?
“You can't build a reputation telling people what you are going to do!” ~Henry FordIt's a commonly accepted practice after all... tell everyone about your goals so you are accountable and extra motivated to push forward, right?Well surprise - surprise! It turns out that announcing your goals is one of the biggest drains of energy and it often proves to diminish your chances of success as you strive to achieve your goal.Martin discusses his personal experience with this concept and how he noted his energy was best expended NOT in talking about his goals but in the act of getting busy to accomplish them— forging the habits that will accelerate the goals achievement.Martin then shares a related TED talk by Derek Sivers (link below) and some of the science Derek cites that contradicts the often promoted "tell everyone" tactic.Check out this week's F.A.F. and learn how keeping your trap shut is likely to put you on the fast track to goal achievement! If you still want to tell someone... S02-Mind Bullet Monday 05: Humans Are Justifying Creatures
"Humans are justifying creatures... we'll craft a story and then we'll dig-in and get behind it. The exercise is, I think, to challenge our story recognizing that is our nature."While many people may be naturally gifted when it comes to interpersonal skills, others struggle in the area and it often holds them back and expends a lot of time and energy. What most people fail to recognize is that arguments are often rooted in the simple truth that nobody wants to be thought of as stupid or dumb and therefore will do whatever they can to position themselves as "right" and justify their actions, no matter what they might have been.Consider this truth and how it might be useful when understanding and relating to friends, family and others better— to help avoid unnecessary arguments.Whether it's as mundane as not doing the dishes or as horrible as murder one tends to justify their actions. And, it's important to note that people will as fiercely defend their non-actions as their their actions!"People will either show you their results or they will show you their excuses." S02-Frequently Asked Friday 04: What is the Law of Cosmic Habit Force?
After searching for nearly 20 years Napoleon Hill finally declares he's discovered the missing link— the secret that he unintentionally left out of his bestselling classic, "Think & Grow Rich".It appears that The Law of Cosmic Habit Force is only something Napoleon Hill could have discovered after writing Think & Grow Rich and hearing from many that, "it didn't work" and wasn't making them rich.A distraught Napoleon was confounded as he heard this sort of feedback repeatedly. Even though it worked for many, his 16 principles fell short for a number of other readers.“WHAT was missing!?” Well, Mr. Hill pondered that question long and hard, and, as he explained it, he found himself meditating upon this “missing link” FOR ANOTHER 20 YEARS!So, what was missing!?Well, it’s almost unfair to tell you/share it ; ). Consider that Napoleon Hill spent 20 years of his life formulating this success philosophy and authoring Think & Grow Rich, then another 20 years trying to figure out what the “MISSING LINK” was (those are HIS words) —40 Years total! This may be too BIG a topic for a short Mind-Bullet Monday but Martin does his best to shed light on this mystery in about 12 minutes and encourages those who want to learn and understand more to check out thehabitfactor.com blog and / or the book. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 04: Who is in Control?
"Are you bigger than your problems?" T. Harv Eker Martin kicks off this show about CONTROL with a quote he's heard T. Harv Eker say many times regarding a technique people can use to solve their problems. The first thing they can ask themselves is, "Who is bigger? Me or the problem?"Martin then carries the idea of "control" further, where control influences other facets of our lives...Consider winning and losing? When one "controls" the environment they certainly have a better chance at winning, don't they? Hence, competitive environments are designed to be neutral and there are even referees to ensure an environment of fairness. We all tend to recognize the idea of the "home field" advantage. Further, psychologists now concur that a sense of control increases one's level of happiness. If you're unhappy perhaps you should investigate your level of control related to various aspects of your life (home, family, work, etc)."Ask yourself, "Is there anything I can do to change the environment (control) to increase my happiness and chance of success?" ~M. GrunburgMartin reminds listeners to revisit the prior week's episode and agrees that there are a lot of things beyond our control, including those unwavering principles. S02-Frequently Asked Friday 03: Are Habits Better Than Goals?
"Are habits better than goals?"This is a semi-crazy meme that Martin wrote about last week (here). In this episode, Martin elaborates on the idea that these are equal and complementary components when it comes to goal achievement. Then he shares a bit of a surprise— just how far back this realization actually dates. The short story is that goals properly set (with significant motivation to achieve them) illuminate the ideal behaviors/habits one needs to foster. And, using The Habit Factor's method of habit development, P.A.R.R. (Plan, Act, Record & Reassess) one is able to develop habits more quickly. S02-Mind Bullet Monday 03: Principles and Lighthouses
"Fundamentally, these are the core four— the power four— that sustain us and direct our outcome and well being..." Martin opens with a story shared by the late, great Dr. Stephen Covey regarding the unwavering principles that influence the outcome of our life. If these are ignored, dishonored the consequences are severe.Covey shares a fabled (and apparently fabricated) story about a US Navy Captain being told that another ship is in their course and further, is unwilling to move. The Captain gets on the phone and demands the other ship to move or suffer the consequences. The importance of checking our ego, asking questions and "honoring" these four dimensions helps us to direct the consequences. That is, since the lighthouses (the principles are unwavering) we must "move" and honor them with our actions in order to experience the outcomes we desire.Dr. Covey's four dimensions are:MindBodyHeartSpiritGrunburg sees some overlap between the heart and the body and also the mind and so, insists that the social dimension (is missing) and is a governing principle in our lives that cannot be overlookedMindBodySpiritSocialHear all about it on this Mind Bullet Monday!
