The news headlines lately are reminiscent of something out of 1950s sci-fi horror movies, featuring grotesque, mutated animals, radioactive insects, mysterious blobs, and brain-eating parasites.
We now have alarming stories about the New World screwworm - a flesh-burrowing larva that can be fatal to animals and devastate cattle herds. Infestation in humans can be "quite painful," with high mortality rates if left untreated.
What could be causing these abnormalities in sentient life? Is it natural selection and adaptation due to environmental changes, or are clandestine doctors and scientists tinkering with biology?
