S1 Ep 107"Black Panther," "Early Man," "The Wanderers"
It's one of the most successful openings of all time, in just about every major category. Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" seems destined to be talked about for decades to come. So we add our voices to the chorus, digging into one of Marvel's most fascinating movies. Lost in the shuffle this weekend was Nick Park's return to his stop-motion animation with "Early Man," with the voices of Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston. Then in our Reboot section, we look at 1979's "The Wanderers." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S1 Ep 106"The Cloverfield Paradox," "Fifty Shades Freed," "15:17 To Paris," "Baby Doll"
We have a long discussion about Netflix and what makes a movie a movie and, at last, the film that inspired that discussion, "The Cloverfield Paradox." Then we're off to the two new releases. First, it's the final chapter of the bewilderingly odd and occasionally amusing "Fifty Shades" franchise, "Fifty Shades Freed." Then, an even stranger movie: Clint Eastwood's real-life heroes drama, "15:17 to Paris." Also, a reboot! It's the 1956 Elia Kazan-Tennessee Williams collaboration "Baby Doll." S1 Ep 105"A Fantastic Woman," "Winchester," "The Big Lebowski," "Legally Blonde"
After the wasteland of January, February at least brings us a little, with the Oscar-nominated "A Fantastic Woman," which Grierson praises. Less praise-worthy: Helen Mirren's dull, pointless "Winchester." Lots of excitement with the Reboots, though. First, the Coen brothers' cult hit "The Big Lebowski." Does it stand up as a movie, or just as a quip delivery device? Then we look at "Legally Blonde," the movie that elevated Reese Witherspoon to the massive movie star she is today. S1 Ep 1042018 Sundance Recap, Most Anticipated Movies of 2018, "City of God"
Grierson is back from Sundance, and he's ready to give us his best and worst films from this year's festival. The best movie he saw may in fact never play in a theater at all. Because there are no worthwhile movies released in January, we look forward as well, previewing the 10 movies we're most looking forward to in 2018. Then, in our Reboot segment, we look back at 2002's "City of God." How does it hold up 16 years later? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 103Housekeeping Non-Canon Interstitial and a Reminder to Buy a T-Shirt
We interrupt your Monday with a brief interlude to remind you to: a: Watch the Oscar nominations Tuesday; b: Listen to our show before you do so; c: Buy a T-shirt. Oh, and we have new music! Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or [email protected]. S1 Ep 1032018 Oscar Nomination Predictions, "12 Strong," "Gremlins 2: The New Batch"
The Oscar nominations come out THIS TUESDAY, so we've got you prepared and ready with our annual predictions in each of the major six categories. Is it a "Three Billboards Over Ebbing, Missouri" year? Can "Get Out" or "Lady Bird" crash the party? Has everybody forgotten about "The Post" and "Dunkirk?" We also look at the Afghan War drama "12 Strong," with Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon. Then we travel to 1990 and wonder how Joe Dante's "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" ever got made. S1 Ep 102"The Commuter," "Paddington 2," "World of Tomorrow, Episode Two," "The Thing"
Like "Sister Act 2," we're back in the habit this week. First, we use our specific talents to look at Liam Neeson's next vengeful dad in "The Commuter." Then we head to London for the warm-hearted adventures of that friendly bear in "Paddington 2." Then we encourage you to rent "World of Tomorrow, Episode Two," Don Hertzfeldt's incredible animated short. Then, in our Reboot segment, we do our THIRD John Carpenter movie, looking at 1982's "The Thing." We like Carpenter movies more each time we do one. Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 1012018 Mailbag Show, "Cloverfield"
It is time for our annual Mailbag show, in which we answer your questions about movies, our process, our limitations and anything that might pop into your mind. It has been a fascinating year in movies: Your questions, and hopefully our answers, reflect that. Also we have a Reboot movie. It's 2008's "Cloverfield," which was released 10 years ago this week. How does it hold up? We dig into it. Oh, and we have new music! Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S1 Ep 100Dorkfest 2017: Our Ten Best Movies of the Year
It's here! Just in time for the end of the year, it's our annual massive Dorkfest podcast, in which we reveal our best 10 movies of 2017. Grierson doesn't know Leitch's list; Leitch doesn't know Grierson's. They reveal their lists to each other, and you, live on the podcast. They've been doing this for more than 20 years. But now they tape it. We'll be back next week with our annual Mailbag show: Send your questions to [email protected]. But for now: Just enjoy our favorite show of the year. S1 Ep 99"Star Wars: The Last Jedi"
The show is here! It's Opening Night for the new "Star Wars" movie, "The Last Jedi," and we are extremely here for that. Does Rian Johnson breathe new life into the franchise? It's our annual Star Wars show: It's just Star Wars. That's all: Our big spoiler-iffic review of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." We're serious about the spoilers: Do NOT listen until you have seen the movie. And then listen, and listen good. Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 98"The Post," "Phantom Thread," "Molly's Game"
There are only three shows left in the 2017 movie season, ending with our annual Dorkfest 2017 wrapup of our top 10 films of the year. And we've got three biggies to dig into down the stretch. First, Steven Spielberg's stirring ode to journalism and democracy, "The Post," starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. Then Daniel Day-Lewis' last performance (sure, Daniel) in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread." And we finish with Aaron Sorkin's poker drama "Molly's Game." Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 97"The Disaster Artist," "The Shape of Water," "Wonder Wheel"
We're down to the final days of the 2017 movie season, and we've got three big ones to discuss. In fact, we only have three more shows left -- counting this one -- until our big Dorkfest Top 10 Movies of 2017 podcast. First, we look at James Franco's "The Disaster Artist." Then we dig into Guillermo del Toro's much-heralded "The Shape of Water." We finish with America's Sweetheart Woody Allen and his new movie "Wonder Wheel." Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 96"Coco," "Call Me By Your Name," "The Darkest Hour," "Spaceballs"
Pixar has a new movie out, "Coco," and it's one of the best-reviewed movies of the year. But one of us is not into it at all. We dig into the animated hit. Then, we sing the praises of the wondrous summer romance "Call Me By Your Name" before touching, briefly, on "The Darkest Hour." The goofiness comes in our Reboot segment, the last Reboot of 2017. (It's a busy last month in the theaters.) No better way to finish it out than with Mel Brooks' 1987 comedy "Spaceballs." Funny, she doesn't look Druish. Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 95"Justice League," "Mudbound," "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond," "Slap Shot"
They may have tried to hide "Justice League"'s Rotten Tomatoes score, but they can't hide the movie from us. This week, we did into the latest DC Comics movie fiasco, which is better than "Batman v. Superman" ... bu t not good. Then, two Netflix releases, both worth watching. "Mudbound," and "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond," about Jim Carrey and Andy Kaufman, but mostly Jim Carrey. Then, in our Reboot segment, we look back at one of the most beloved sports movies of all time: 1977's "Slap Shot." Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 94"Murder on the Orient Express," "I Love You, Daddy," "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," "Thelma," "Cabaret"
The big release this weekend is Kenneth Branagh's "Murder on the Orient Express," but the most fascinating movie might be one that didn't get a release at all: Louis CK's "I Love You, Daddy," which might end up never being seen by anyone. Our Tim Grierson is one of those people. We attempt to grapple with it. Also : "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" and "Thelma." Then, in our Reboot segment, we look at 1972's "Cabaret," a movie that suddenly feels much more urgent than it did 10 years ago. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S1 Ep 93"Thor: Ragnarok," "Last Flag Flying," "Lady Bird," "LBJ," "Punch Drunk Love"
The biggest story in entertainment is the increasingly horrific stories involving Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and others, and we discuss how we talk about movies, and off-screen scandals, and whether we can truly ever separate the two. Then it's time for the big hit of the weekend, "Thor: Ragnarok." Grierson solos on "Last Flag Flying," "Lady Bird" and "LBJ," and then it's the centerpiece, a discussion of the wonderful, still-breathtaking "Punch Drunk Love" from Paul Thomas Anderson. S1 Ep 92"Suburbicon," "Thank You For Your Service," "The Manchurian Candidate"
Hardly anyone went to see either of the two new movies we're talking about this week. They are still worthy of discussion! So this week, we dig into George Clooney's Coen fanfic "Suburbicon," and Jason Hall's "American Sniper" followup "Thank You For Your Service." Then we head all the way back to 1962 for our Reboot segment, and discuss John Frankenheimer's notorious (and pretty brilliant) "The Manchurian Candidate." It's Frank Sinatra as you've never seen him before. (He's actually trying.) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. S1 Ep 91"The Killing of a Sacred Deer," "Wonderstruck," "Only the Brave," "The Snowman," "The Fugitive"
Yorgos Lanthimos had one of the indie hits of last year with "The Lobster," and now he's back with "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and "Dunkirk" star Barry Keoghan. Does it work as well as "The Lobster," or even "Dogtooth?" We discuss! Also, Grierson goes solo on "Wonderstruck" and "Only the Brave," and then Leitch tries, and fails spectacularly, to make sense of the insane fiasco that is "The Snowman." Also: In our Reboot segment, we discuss "The Fugitive." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)," "Marshall," "Professor Marston and the Wonder Women," "Heathers"
Netflix's newest venture into the world of movies is, of all things, Noah Baumbach's new movie, "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)," with Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman. It's good, but how good? Also, we dig into the sort-of biopic "Marshall" and the warm-hearted true story "Professor Marston and the Wonder Women." Then, in our Reboot segment, well, download us gently with a chainsaw, because we're heading back to 1988 and "Heathers." "Blade Runner 2049," "The Mountain Between Us," "The Florida Project," "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"
Diehard fans waited more than 30 years for it, and now it's here: The sequel to "Blade Runner," "Blade Runner 2049," a long, thoughtful, gorgeous film that both nods to and exceeds the original. Director Denis Villeneuve's film is challenging, thoughtful and ambitious, but it's also far from perfect. We dig into it, and there's plenty to dig into. Also, we look at the plane-crash romance "The Mountain Between Us" and the much-praised indie "The Florida Project." Then, in our Reboot segment, we look back to 1988 and the beloved teenage classic "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." Whoa. "American Made," "Bull Durham," "Halloween"
Tom Cruise. Some people love him, some people hate him, but he is always, always here. This week on the Grierson & Leitch podcast, our two hosts -- admittedly on the positive side on the Cruise ledger -- break down Cruise's "American Made," a fascinating spin on the Cruise persona that's another interesting spin from director Doug Liman. Even if you don't like Cruise, you might like this one. Then, in our Reboot section, we get seasonal. In honor of the start of the baseball playoffs, we look at the 1988 classic "Bull Durham." Then, to get you in the spooky October mood, we reach back for John Carpenter's seminal classic "Halloween." Timestamps: 6:10 "American Made" 26:30 "Bull Durham" 49:45 "Halloween" We hope you enjoy. "Battle of the Sexes," "Kingsman: The Golden Circle," "Me and Orson Welles," "Holy Motors"
This week in the Grierson & Leitch podcast, we dig into the new Emma Stone-Steve Carell docudrama "Battle of the Sexes," which is unquestionably the best tennis movie of all time unless you're counting "Strangers on a Train" and maybe "Match Point." Then we tackle the sequel "Kingsman: The Golden Circle," which adds Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges and Halle Berry to the cast, but only barely. Then, in our Reboot segment, we discuss the oft-forgotten Richard Linklater film "Me and Orson Welles," as well as the crazy 2012 French film "Holy Motors." "mother!" "Brad's Status," "The Hudsucker Proxy"
Audiences hate it, critics are divided (but mostly like it) and everyone's sort of scandalized now that it exists ... but what do Grierson & Leitch think of Darren Aronofsky's "mother!"? This week's episode, taped live in Grierson's dining room in Los Angeles, digs into it. It's the movie everyone is talking about, for better or worse. Also, Grierson praises Ben Stiller's new film "Brad's Status." (Leitch hasn't seen it, thanks to a faulty print.) Then, in our Reboot segment, we head back to 1994 and the Coen brothers' first big Hollywood movie, "The Hudsucker Proxy." "Dunkirk," "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets," "Girls Trip," "24 Hour Party People"
We've got four movies to discuss this week, but to be honest, there's only one we REALLY want to talk about: It's of course Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk," one of the best films of the year. Grierson calls it one of the best moviegoing experiences of his lifetime, and all told, Leitch isn't that far behind him. Listen to them rave about Nolan's achievement. OK, fine, there were other movies too. Luc Besson's "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is a noble failure, and "Girls Trip" is a noble success. Then, in our Reboot segment, we head back to 2002 for Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People." Timestamps: 5:15: "Dunkirk" 32:20 "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" 45:05 "Girls Trip" 56:56 "24 Hour Party People" We hope you enjoy. "War for the Planet of the Apes," "Mulholland Drive," "Kicking and Screaming"
Podcast strong. Ape proud. This week in the Grierson & Leitch podcast, we discuss the final film in the much-lauded "Planet of the Apes" trilogy, "War for the Planet of the Apes." Grierson is a huge fan of the first two films, especially the second one, but they left Leitch cold. So it's a little surprising where they both land here. Then we have two Reboot movies. First, it's 2001's "Mulholland Drive," David Lynch's masterwork that is considered by some to be the best movie so far this century. We're not quite willing to go that far, but it's still great. Then, they tackle 1995's "Kicking and Screaming," which is not the Will Ferrell soccer movie: It's Noah Baumbach's first feature. It's the '90s again! "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "A Ghost Story," "Magnolia"
We are delighted to come at you with nothing but happiness this week. We've got three movies this week, and we like all three of them. But there is shading in our praise. Will loves the new "Spider-Man" reboot, while Tim likes it, but finds it a little bit too familiar to his taste. They both love "A Ghost Story," though, David Lowery's strange, gorgeous glimpse into the abyss of death and the cosmos. Then, in our Reboot segment, we dig into Paul Thomas Anderson's three-plus-hour 1999 epic "Magnolia." Honestly, we could talk about that movie for hours. Best Movies of the First Half of 2017, "Okja," "The House"
We have reached the midway point of 2017, which means it's time to look back at our favorite movies from the first half the year. So Will and Tim each give their picks for the best six movies so far. There is only one crossover on both lists. Sorry: We're going to make you listen to find out what the films are. We also have two new reviews this week. First, Bong Joon-Ho's "Okja," a Netflix original that's the most ambitious and unwieldy movie the streaming service has made yet. Then a movie that is much, much worse than not only that, but almost any movie you will see this year: The airless, laugh-free "The House." No Reboot segment this week: Those will return next week. "Baby Driver," "The Beguiled," "The Big Sick," "Transformers," "Nobody Speak," "Inside Moves"
This is an insanely busy movie week, so: No chit-chat! Time to get down to business. Will and Tim first dig into Edgar Wright's unique vision that is "Baby Driver." (His name is Baby. He is not in fact a baby.) Will hasn't seen "The Beguiled" or "The Big Sick" yet, so Tim monologues on those, but they return to lament their lost souls after sitting through "Transformers: The Last Knight." But there's more! They both have a personal connection to the Netflix documentary "Nobody Speak," but they (mostly) put that aside to judge the movie on its merits. And then in their Reboot segment, they try to figure out why everyone liked Richard Donner's 1980 comedy-drama "Inside Moves." Timestamps: 5:30 "Baby Driver" 27:10 "The Beguiled" 31:45 "The Big Sick" 36:35 "Transformers: The Last Knight" 54:10 "Nobody Speak" 1:16:30 "Inside Moves" We hope you enjoy. "Cars 3," "All Eyez On Me," "Rough Night," "The Book of Henry"
A busy weekend means we have no time for a Reboot segment this week, but we've got plenty to discuss on this week's Grierson & Leitch podcast. First, we dig into "Cars 3," which Grierson believes is not only worse than "Cars 2" but in fact the worst movie Pixar has made. Leitch disagrees. There is much more agreement on the bewilderingly bad "All Eyez On Me," which is safe and dull in a way its subject Tupac Shakur never, ever was, and the limp comedy "Rough Night," which is one missed opportunity after another. Then Grierson tries to explain what in the world went wrong with Colin Trevorrow's "The Book of Henry," and whether we should worry about his impending "Star Wars" installment. Timestamps: 4:02 "Cars 3" 22:48 "All Eyez On Me" 41:00 "Rough Night" 1:00:10 "The Book of Henry" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or [email protected]. "It Comes At Night," "The Mummy," "Shadow of a Doubt"
Listeners of the Grierson & Leitch podcast are often a little bummed out that Tim and Will don't disagree that often, which makes sense, considering they've known each other since they were in middle school. But we've got some real disagreement this week. Grierson is a big fan of Trey Edward Schults' "It Comes At Night." Leitch is quite a bit less so. They dig into that this week, as well as their shared tendency to want to lightly, very carefully defend Tom Cruise's "The Mummy," which is not good, but is not as defiantly bad as some have argued. Then, in their Reboot segment, they discuss their third Alfred Hitchcock movie. This week, it's 1943's "Shadow of a Doubt," a film that Hitchcock believed was his best. Grierson is not so sure. "Wonder Woman," "The English Patient," "In Bruges"
"Wonder Woman" has already become one of the biggest hits of the year, something that probably shouldn't have been as much of a surprise to people as it is, but we're mostly just relieved by how different it is from "Batman v. Superman." We dig into the most enjoyable DC Comics movie since Christopher Nolan moved on with his life. Then, in our Reboot segment, we head into fierce battle with Elaine Benes by discussing the virtues of 1996's "The English Patient." Then, we head to Belgium, where we will sightsee and lament our hitman lifestyle with 2008's "In Bruges." 2017 Cannes, "War Machine," "Baywatch," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "George Washington"
Welcome back from your Memorial Day weekend, everyone: We return with a piping hot show, and man, do we ever have a lot to fit in. Grierson just got back from Cannes, so we talk about the major takeaways from the festival. Then we dig into the Netflix original film "War Machine," directed by "Animal Kingdom"'s David Michod and starring Brad Pitt, based off a book by the late journalist Michael Hastings. But that's just getting warmed up. We also have to wrap our minds around "Baywatch," and then Will has to explain what exactly a FIFTH "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel might have to offer. It's smoother sailing, so to speak, in our Reboot section, in which we discuss David Gordon Green's 2000 debut film "George Washington." Timestamps: 5:55 2017 Cannes Film Festival recap 18:25 "War Machine" 52:35 "Baywatch" 1:07:05 "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" 1:20:30 "George Washington" We hope you enjoy. "Alien: Covenant," "The Big Chill," "Game 6"
Grierson is in Cannes, but that will not stop him from his appointed podcast rounds. So he takes a break from his constant partying in France to ask Leitch about "Alien: Covenant," which Will thinks is a lot better than it is being given credit for. Then, in our Reboot segment, we tackled Lawrence Kasdan's smash 1983 hit "The Big Chill," which your parents (and our parents) have many thoughts about. And then we look at 2005's "Game 6," the one Don DeLillo screenplay on record and a film that's almost a dry run for "Birdman." "Snatched," "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword," "Billy Madison"
We come to you with announcements! This is our first show of the rest of our lives! Grierson & Leitch are leaving our friends at The New Republic and heading to Paste Magazine! We have details and warm memories, and also much excitement. But don't worry, we don't talk TOO much about it: We have movies to get to. We discuss Amy Schumer's new film "Snatched," which brings back Goldie Hawn about 15 years away ... to no positive result. Also, we discuss Guy Ritchie's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword," which is basically King Arthur v. Young Pope. Then, in our Reboot section, we try to gleam something positive from 1995's Billy Madison. "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2," "Cast Away," "Streets of Fire"
It's not really a summer movie season until the new Marvel movie is released, which means, well, now it's summer movie season: Here comes "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2," the sequel to the smash James Gunn hit that redefined what a Marvel movie could be. Turns out: Tim and Will actually like the second one even better. Find out why. Then, in our Reboot segment, we look at Robert Zemeckis' 2000 hit "Cast Away," which features an incredibly shrinking Tom Hanks and a volleyball named Wilson. We also dig into Walter Hill's incredibly strange but admirably driven "rock and roll fable" from 1984, "Streets of Fire." "The Circle," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "A History of Violence"
Tom Hanks. Emma Watson. John Boyega. Dave Eggers. Patton Oswalt. Bill Paxton, in his last film. The kid from "Boyhood." The guy who directed "The End of the Tour" and "The Spectacular Now." Yes, "The Circle" is a movie with nearly unparalleled pedigree, based off a well-regarded book by one of America's most beloved authors. So how in the world did "The Circle" end up being so jaw-droppingly horrible? We try to dig into what happened. Then, in our Reboot segment, we look back at 1951's "A Streetcar Named Desire," with Vivien Leigh, Kim Hunter, Karl Malden and, of course, a feral, animalistic Marlon Brandon in a performance that changed screen acting forever. And we wrap up with 2005's "A History of Violence," David Cronenberg's adaptation of a famous graphic novel that features Viggo Mortensen, Mario Bello, Ed Harris and William Hurt grappling with, well, violence, and its history. "Free Fire," "Network," "The Royal Tenenbaums"
A slow week for new releases -- it's apparently all "Boss Baby" all the time these days -- gives us only one major new release this week, Ben Wheatley's "Free Fire," starring Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy and Armie Hammer. We disagree on it: One of our critics thinks it's a fun experiment, but the other found it mostly tiresome. Then, in our Reboot segment, we discuss how that Sidney Lumet's "Network" doesn't hold up nearly as well as you might remember, and Wes Anderson's "The Royal Tenenbaums" was a step forward for the filmmaker ... but just a peek at what he'd be able to do even better more than a decade later. "The Fate of the Furious," "The Lost City of Z," "Zero Effect," "Man of the West"
This week, our critics can neither agree nor disagree: Tim is blissfully ignorant of the "Fast and the Furious" franchise -- he's only see the Tokyo Drift one -- and Will hasn't seen James Gray's "The Lost City of Z" yet. So they ask each other about each film, spoiler-free, so you can make your own decision. (But they're positive on both.) In their weekly Reboot segment, they head back to the late '90s to discuss Jake Kasden's "Zero Effect" and then go WAY back, all the way back to Gary Cooper, for 1958's "Man of the West." "Graduation," "Colossal," "The Last of the Mohicans"
Two new releases highlight the podcast this week which, last week's show notwithstanding, will not in fact turn into a weekly podcast about "The Room." First, Will and Tim did into the Romanian moral drama "Graduation," which feels like '90s "Crimes and Misdemeanors"-era Woody Allen, but even more spare and despairing. Then they discuss Nacho Vigalondo's "Colossal," which features Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis as two Americans who have the strange, unwitting ability to control monsters attacking downtown Seoul. In this week's Reboot segment, we dig into Michael Mann's "The Last of the Mohicans," which features a brawny Daniel Day-Lewis being hyper intense. There's even a fun skit from the old "Ben Stiller Show" that we added. Stay alive, no matter what occurs! We will find you! "Ghost in the Shell," "The Last Picture Show," "The Room"
The big new release of the week was "Ghost in the Shell," and Tim and Will actively disagree on it, though neither can arguing that critics of its "whitewashing" have a point. But you should probably just watch "Under the Skin" instead. But that's all fine and dandy, but the REAL fun of this week's show comes in the Reboots. Our first Reboot is Peter Bogdanovich's masterpiece "The Last Picture Show," which feels even more urgent today. But that movie may still not live as long as our second Reboot, Tommy Wiseau's infamous "The Room." Neither Tim nor Will had never seen it. It is fair to say now that they will never forget it. "Life," "CHIPs," "Power Rangers," "The Trouble With Harry," "Big Business"
Grierson is back! Grierson is back! After two weeks away resting his voice after surgery to remove a polyp/nodule from his throat, our beloved co-host returns this week, and man, did we miss him. We dig right into the "Alien" homage/ripoff "Life," starring Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Grierson also answers Leitch's questions about "CHIPs" and "Power Rangers," which he didn't see because, hey, life's too short. Also, we have two Reboots, both taped pre-surgery, in case you're wondering why Grierson sounds rougher. First, we tackled Alfred Hitchcock's "The Trouble With Harry," which featured the first on-screen appearance of Shirley MacLaine. Then we delve into the 1988 twins comedy "Big Business," with Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin. Timestamps: 6:35 "Life" 22:26 "CHIPs" 31:27 "Power Rangers" 43:40 "The Trouble With Harry" 56:50 "Big Business" But yes: The real story here is that Grierson is back. We hope you enjoy. "Beauty and the Beast," "T2 Trainspotting," "Easy Rider," "Repo Man"
Grierson is out for a second consecutive week after having a polyp removed, so we are delighted to welcome the incomparable Christy Lemire, of RogerEbert.com and "What the Flick?" and so many other places to be our guest host this week. She is one of the best film critics on the planet, and without question the nicest. She is also so much smarter than either Grierson or Leitch. So Christy and Will dig into the remake/reboot/rewhatever of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," and then Will asks Christy about "T2: Trainspotting," and whether it will mess with one's affections for the original. But don't fret: We still have some Grierson, with our previously taped Reboot segments. In those, we discuss cultural touchstone "Easy Rider," man, and we tackle '80s cult hit "Repo Man." Timestamps: 7:30 "Beauty and the Beast" 28:40 "T2: Trainspotting" 42:10 "Easy Rider" 1:01:36 "Repo Man" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or [email protected]. "Kong: Skull Island," "Personal Shopper," "A Fish Called Wanda"
Our beloved Tim is out recovering from minor surgery, so we have our first fill-in host to play around with Will: It's Mark Lisanti, of MTV News and formerly of Grantland and Defamer. He is one of our favorite people in the world, and as much as we miss Tim, we are delighted to have him. Mark and Will dig into the new, dull King Kong flick "Kong: Skull Island," and then wrestle with Olivier Assayas' mysterious Kristen Stewart ghost drama "Personal Shopper." You don't have to go without Tim's voice, though. Because we knew Tim was going to miss a few shows, we pretaped a bunch of Reboots. This week, we try to solve our '80s comedies conundrum with "A Fish Called Wanda." Timestamps: 4:30 "Kong: Skull Island" 21:20 "Personal Shopper" 36:20 "A Fish Called Wanda" We hope you enjoy.
