Ep 45How to Die with Dignity: An Interview with Kacie Gikonyo: A Death Doula

Death is like the “elephant in the middle of the room.” Everyone sees the elephant but pretends the huge, gray elephant is not there. We dare not even talk about the elephant. I feel sorry for the elephant. Don’t you? Everyone ignores him! Poor Mr. Elephant! Yet, death is our most important act. Don’t you want to control your death? The way it is now, most humans do not. But we should be able to! People should reduce pain and suffering and retain their freedom, control, and autonomy at the end-of-life process. A death doula can help! Listen as host Tim Jordan interviews an official death doula. Ep 44Living with Loss. Part 2.

Loss can be anything. The loss of your health. The loss of health of someone who you love. The loss of your function or the loss of function of someone you love. The ability to drive. The loss of independence. Divorce. Retirement. Old age. A house fire. The loss of a childhood. A breakup. A break-in. The death of a pet. The death of a person. So, in a very real sense, “loss is loss” because all losses involve grief. Any person, pet, or thing that you loved that is taken away from you, against your will is a loss. I guarantee that all of you have had major losses by the time you were 18 years old. Always remember that a zebra cannot change its stripes. Therefore, the way that you cope with small losses will be the way that you cope with big losses. For example, if you isolate yourself during a small loss, you will isolate yourself when you experience a big loss. Listen to this interesting podcast as our host interviews three men who relied in their faith to cope with losses: Ryan Avery, Frank Calleson, and Sam Polk. Ep 43S3,E2: Living with Loss. The Story of Larry Avery

Who was Larry Avery? He was a humble, unassuming man who “walked the talk.” He served his county, his faith, his family, and his community on the east side of Toledo. I knew Larry, his wife, and his now adult children for my entire adult life. I miss Larry! Larry Avery died and left this realm on November 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 75 years old. He is now in a beautiful place where he does not want to come back from. What is loss? Loss can be anything. The loss of health. A job that you really liked. Retirement. A break in. A break up. A divorce. A house fire. Certainly, the loss of a person you loved via death is a loss. However, loss can be anything! Grief and mourning are not the same thing! Listen to the podcast to hear how these two things are different and put into practice. Listen as host Tim Jordan interviews the bereft: Evelyn Sigler-Avery (Larry’s wife), Cathy Avery-Lorton (Larry’s sister), his best friend of over 60 years, Ken Chisholm, and two of three of his adult children, Nathan Avery, and Holly Avery-Rugg, as they teach us lessons about living with loss and who Larry Avery was. Ep 42Two Problems Youth Will Face in 2026.

What two problems will youth face in 2026 and beyond? If trends do not change, the two primary problems of youth will face in 2026 and beyond will be school shootings and youth suicide. More than 25 years after the school shooting at Columbine High School, school shootings in the U.S., school shootings are going down after a high of 350 in 2023. You read that correctly! A school shooting is defined as every time a gun is brandished, fired, or a bullet hits school property for any reason, regardless of the number of victims (including zero), time, day or the week, or reason, including gang shootings, domestic violence, shootings at sports events. In terms of suicide, it is now the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10-14 and the third for those aged 15-24 in the United States. Suicides just keep going up! Children's hospitals have seen a massive increase in emergency department visits for suicide attempts and self-injury among children aged 5-18 between 2016 and 2022, highlighting the ongoing crisis. Most concerning are the reports that have highlighted the dangers of generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots. Some parents have testified that the technology encouraged their children's suicide plans. Listen as host Tim Jordan interviews Dr. Lisa Pescara Kovach, a true expert on the problems and youth. ========================================================================== Resources for this podcast: The University of Toledo: https://www.utoledo.edu/ The Judith Herb College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Education utoledo.edu/jhc/ Lisa Pescara Kovach’s page at UToledo. https://www.utoledo.edu/jhc/about/faculty/lisa-pescara-kovach/ Lisa Pescara Kovach’s page at Routledge Publisher. https://www.routledge.com/authors/i23262-lisa-pescara-kovach Book Co-Authored by Dr. Kovach: White Supremacist Violence: Understanding the Resurgence and Stopping the Spread (2023). Ep 41Why Can’t this Plan Work for all States in the U.S?

Why cannot this plan work all states in the U.S.? It has worked in Europe since the 1990’s and it's already in five states here. Tennessee (TN) has a major problem that other states are facing. Landfills across the state are approaching capacity. One landfill in Murfreesboro TN takes in more than 1,000 tons of waste every day! It will have to close in four years and because of lack of space. Yet no one wants to live by a landfill. Not in my backyard! What is the solution to this? Ship your garbage 90, 100, 120 miles? No! Those extra costs to ship garbage that far is very high and consumers simply will not pay such costs. About 76% of Americans throw their recyclables in the trash and TN ranks almost last in recycling in the country. What is the solution to this dilemma? The solution is to put less trash in the landfill and to recycle more. How to do that? It’s called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Listen as host Tim Jordan explores this idea with State Senator, from Davidson County TN, Heidi Campbell, who sponsored the Tennessee Waste to Jobs Act. ================================= Resources for This Podcast: Website: Tennessee Waste to Jobs. https://tnwastetojobs.com/ You Tube Video: Waste to Jobs Act. Ep 39S2, E10: Why You Should Care About Local Elections. An Interview with Joseph Audino

I believe that politics determine a person’s health status. Politics determine one’s world view, one's priorities, and funding for various causes. Politics and public health are intertwined. In fact, there is not an area of life that is not impacted by politics. The health of the U.S. public has always been political. Therefore, we should be talking (and teaching students) more about politics. Local elections often have very low voter turnout, which gives your vote significantly more power. Small margins have big consequences. Many local races are decided by just a few dozen or hundred votes. Please vote! Local elections largely determine quality of life. Many critical decisions about your immediate community are made at the local level. For example, in November, you will probably be voting on some of the following issues. Education: School board members supervise, hire, and dismiss the superintendent, establish policies, make decisions on curricula, school funding, and classroom sizes. Public safety: Mayors, county sheriffs, and district attorneys set policing policies and affect the criminal justice system in your community. Infrastructure and services: City council members and county commissioners determine how your tax dollars are spent on roads, parks, libraries, and utilities like water and sanitation. Housing and zoning: Local officials decide on zoning laws, affordable housing availability, and land use for new developments. Voting locally can also empower historically underrepresented groups and communities and ensure that government is responsive to all residents. Low turnout among certain populations can result in decisions that do not reflect their needs. Conversely, high participation can drive systemic change. Please vote! Local election officials also oversee polling locations, voting hours, and how election laws are implemented, all of which affect the accessibility of voting. Consistent voter participation ensures that elected officials are accountable to the people who put them in office. Besides that, local leaders are part of your community, making them more accessible and responsive to residents than national politicians. You are more likely to have opportunities to engage directly with local officials, whether it be through social media, at a community event, or a town hall type meeting. You have the opportunity to give input. Many local boards and commissions are volunteer positions that allow residents to provide input and shape policies on specific issues. Major policy changes often start at the grass roots or local level before gaining momentum to become state or national initiatives. By participating in local elections, you can help lay the groundwork for wider change on issues you care about. Ep 37How Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill with Impact Health. An Interview with John Ross, MD, MPH

On July 3, 2025, Congress passed the sweeping, One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Amid the self-imposed rush to deliver the bill to President Donald Trump’s desk by July 4, many Americans are still looking for information about the bill. This bill was largely debated in the dead of night and pushed through at breakneck speed. The confusion that many Americans are experiencing has been exacerbated by misleading and inaccurate statements about how and whether the bill’s cuts will affect people’s health. It will! Make no mistake – this bill will negatively impact U.S. health! Those who need Medicaid the most will be negatively affected. Furthermore, from 2027 to 2034, Medicare benefits will be cut. Every budget bill is a moral document. Values are clearly shown in budgets. What does this bill show about values? Listen to this podcast and find out. Listen as host, Tim Jordan, interviews John Ross, M.D., MPH about how U.S. health care is funded and the impact of the One Big, Beautiful Bill on the health of Americans. ================================= Resources for This Podcast: Podcast: (2025). Ep 36Is the U.S. Recycling Industry Broken? An Interview with Jeff Snyder, Sr. VP of Recycling and Sustainability, Rumpke Waste and Recycling

Every day, each American generates about 5 lbs. of trash. The rest of the world averages about 1.8 lbs. of trash per person each day. Why the huge difference? According to research, about 76% of Americans throw their recyclables in the trash. How can we increase recycling? For example, we know that plastic waste does not break down in the environment for hundreds of years. Even then, it breaks down to microplastics and nanoplastics. As a past guest said on this podcast, “This generation is discovering the problems. The next generations must solve them.” Very true! Ep 35S2E6 - Grass Roots Health Podcast: Who is the Real Donald Trump? An Interview with David Cay Johnston

Who is the “real” Donald Trump? What does the President of the United States have to do with the health of Americans? The identity of the President has everything to do with health! You see, one’s view of the world determines his/her investment in the health of Americans. The health of Americans has always been political. Whether it is abruptly terminating international assistance in foreign aid, ending severe weather warnings, trying to dismantle the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), decimating the National Park System, slashing existing grants at the National Institutes of Health on vaccine hesitancy, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, and COVID-19 because these topics do not align with your priorities, cutting new grant funding, telling public health specialists what words they can say or write, slashing scientific research at universities, or cutting employees and grant funding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ending programs and grants that are considered WOKE, recommending health related tariffs, having fewer Americans with health insurance, or making radical changes to Medicaid and Social Security, who the President is matters. Listen as host Tim Jordan interviews investigative reporter and author David Cay Johnston about Donald Trump. David has known Donald Trump for 40 years! Ep 34Why Christians Should Care About Immigrants. An Interview with Janelle Metzger

Should Christians care about refugees and immigrants? Listen as Tim Jordan explores this question with his special guest. You should know the differences between the words, “refugee” and “immigrant.” The key difference between a “refugee” and an “immigrant” lies in their reason for migration. “Refugees” are forced to flee their homes due to persecution, war, or violence. “Refugees” seek safety elsewhere, often seeking asylum or refugee status in another country. “Immigrants,” on the other hand, choose to move to another country for various reasons, including economic opportunities, family reunification, education, or to escape difficult living conditions. Due process protections in the U.S. apply to all persons, both citizens and non-citizens, including individuals and corporations. This includes all human beings, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. Even non-citizens are entitled to due process within the U.S., meaning they cannot be arbitrarily deprived of their rights. The Due Process Clause, found in the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, ensures that no person can be deprived of "life, liberty, or property" without due process of law. In the United States, children born on U.S. soil are automatically granted U.S. citizenship. This is a principle known as birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This means that the child becomes a U.S. citizen regardless of the parents' immigration status or the parents’ citizenship status. ================================= Resources for This Podcast: Webpage (2025). https://waterforishmael.org/ Facebook Page (2025). https://www.facebook.com/waterforishmael/ Webpage (2025). https://immigrationforum.org/ Webpage (2025). https://careustz.org/ Article (2025). Ep 33S2E4: The Future of Public Health in the U.S. An Interview with Dr. Mike Osterholm

I first heard about Dr. Mike Osterholm in March 2020 while on spring break in the Phoenix, AZ area for spring training baseball. After attending a spring training game or two, my son-in-law informed me that baseball was canceled for the year. Initially, I thought he was joking, but he was not. The 2020 preseason and regular season baseball were canceled for all fans. That night, we drove approximately 45 minutes to meet some relatives from Tucson, AZ at a restaurant halfway between where we were staying and where they lived. On the way there, my son-in-law asked if I wanted to listen to Dr. Mike Osterholm from the University of Minnesota on the Joe Rogan podcast. I replied, “yes.” All of us in the rental car listened intently and learned a lot! Dr. Osterholm became a trusted source of information for navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. He provided straightforward and accurate information – only calling “balls and strikes” as he says. He is truly, "Mr. Public Health." Listen as host, Tim Jordan, asks Dr. Osterholm the key question: “What is the future of public health in the U.S.?” ================================= Resources for This Podcast: Webpage (2025). Ep 31S2E3: Grass Roots Health Podcast - The U.S. Has an Israel Problem - An Interview with Maha Zedan

The U.S. has an Israel problem. The problem is this: The U.S. has supplied weapons to Israel that have been used by Israel in serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law and in a manner that is inconsistent with U.S. law, policies, and values. The U.S. has supported Israel since the modern establishment of the nation in 1948. There have been atrocities on both sides. However, the atrocities have been greater on the Israeli side. The 1795 website features a blog by this same title: https://1795group.com/the-u-s-has-an-israel-problem/ For the better part of the 20th century, Israel expanded on the foundation of occupation and settler colonialism, while Palestinians attempted to resist within their limited resources and space. Many Israelis acted as if the Palestinians were not even there. Non-existent. Now we have a U.S. President that wants to permanently displace approximately 2 million people from their home to locations unknown after Israel demolished their homes with bombs and missiles. He also stated publicly that the US. will "take over" Gaza, displace nearly 2 million Palestinians from their home to locations that he did not specify, and turn Gaza into new "Riviera" ================================= Resources for This Podcast: 1) Website (December 2024): Global Center for the Responsibility to Protect. Ep 29Season 2, Episode 1. Issues in Maternal and Child Health - An Interview with Duane Herron

Of all similar, wealthy nations of the world, Americans pay the most for health care (I call it “sick care”) and receive the least back for their investment. Get out your large, foam finger. We are No. 1 in health care! We're No 1. USA! USA! USA! Right? Wrong! Infant mortality (death) rate is often used as a proxy indicator of a nation’s health. The U.S. had a higher infant mortality rate than other wealthy countries like us in 2023. Even the Slovak Republic and Chile were better! The infant death rate in 2013 was 5.9 per 1,000 live births. What was the infant death rate in 2023, ten years into the future? The provisional number provided by the CDC for 2023 (CDC, 2024) was 5.61 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. A major drop, correct? Nope! However, Black infants died the most. I am sure it is the amount of pigment in their skin. A Vital Statistics Rapid Release report from the National Center for Health Statistics shows that the provisional infant mortality rate for the United States in 2022 rose 3% from 2021, the first year-to-year increase in the rate since 2001 to 2002. You can read the details here: Infant Mortality in United States: Provisional Data from the 2022 Period Linked Birth/Infant Death File In maternal health, the U.S. has a similar problem. In 2022, the maternal death rate was approximately 22 deaths per 100,000 live births, which again is much higher than other wealthy nations like ours. In fact, the U.S. maternal death rate is 55% greater than that of Chile. Like their babies, black pregnant moms have the highest death rates. Are there issues in maternal and child health? Listen as host, Tim Jordan explores these issues and more with our expert guest, Mr. Duane Herron of Georgia. ================================= Resources for This Podcast: 1) Website: Cobb and Douglass Counties, Public Heath https://cobbanddouglaspublichealth.com/ 2) Website: CDC, Maternal and Child Heath. https://www.cdc.gov/maternal-infant-health/infant-mortality/ 3) Report: March of Dimes Report Card for the U.S. https://www.marchofdimes.org/peristats/reports/united-states/report-card 4) Website: The World Health Organization. Ep 28Grass Roots Health Podcast: Episode # 28 = Do Physician Assistant Students Receive Adequate End-of-Life Education? An Interview with Kelvin Freeman

We are born, live, get old, and then die. This is the natural cycle of life. One thing is certain, humans have a 100% mortality rate. Death is a rite of passage in which we all participate – as a family member, a health care provider, or as a patient. Healthcare providers often view death through a biomedical lens and define death as a physiological event. As a result, they often view death very narrowly as a medical failure. Therefore, healthcare providers are frequently the worst “death deniers” in American society. Instead of talking about death and dying openly and honestly and allowing their patients to prepare for their departure, many healthcare providers often put their patients on the “medical treadmill” of another surgery, another amputation, another round of chemotherapy, or more radiation. Such medical treatment is frequently futile and only serves to steal the patient’s quality of life at the end-of-life stage. In this episode, our host, Tim Jordan, talks to Kelvin Freeman about what he has learned via his research with program directors of accredited physician assistant training programs across the U.S. Do physician assistant students receive adequate end-of-life education during their training? Ep 27Grass Roots Health Episode # 27: Plastic Pollution is Even in My Laundry! An Interview with Judith Weis, Ph.D.

We adults have created a plastic pollution disaster for those that will follow in our footsteps. However, you can be part of the solution starting today! Microplastics, 5 millimeters or less in size, come from a variety of larger plastics such as plastic bottles, car tires, plastic beads (including those in skin-care products), and synthetic fibers. These larger plastics typically break down into smaller and smaller plastics called nano-plastics (less than 1 micrometer in size). Nano-plastics also come from industrial processes. Plastic pollution is also in our homes. Your carpet and rugs are especially to blame. Clothing, bedding, and other textiles shed microplastics in fiber form and are major contributors to plastic pollution, especially when washed. These microfibers, which are carried off by your drains from your washer, enter the wastewater, eventually end up in the environment. The problem with plastics is that take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Only 10% of plastic waste is recycled. Most plastic waste just sits there in the soil in landfills as an environmental pollutant. Worse yet, about 11 million tons of plastic enter our oceans yearly. Let’s do something about this plastic disaster! Listen and learn about plastic pollution in our homes as host Tim Jordan interviews Judit Weis Ph.D. about this issue. Ep 26Grass Roots Health Podcast Episode # 26: There is Plastic Pollution All Around Us. Should I Care? An Interview with Janice Brahney, Ph.D.

This past summer, I visited a Native American Museum in the Ozark Mountains. An Iroquois saying on a painting caught my attention: “We should consider the results of every decision on the next seven generations that follow us.” Smart people were the Iroquois! Unfortunately, we adults in modern times have not been smart. Plastic pollution will be the legacy that we leave our children, grandchildren, and at least, the next seven generations of our descendants. We are leaving those that follow in our footsteps a “plastic pollution disaster.” The problem with plastics is that they are not biodegradable, and they take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Only 10% of plastic waste is recycled. Therefore, most of our plastics just sit there in the soil in landfills as an environmental pollutant. Worse yet, about 11 million tons of plastic enter our oceans yearly, affecting fish, other marine life, humans, and ecosystems. Ep 25Grass Roots Health Episode # 25 - What's Going on with Colo-Rectal Cancer - An Interview with Xavier Llor, MD, PhD, Princeton University

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers collectively represent the most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of death from cancer in the U.S. GI cancers account for just under 30% of all cancer deaths. This type of cancer can affect the esophagus, stomach, pancreas and biliary tract, small intestine, liver, colon, rectum, and anus. GI cancers share risk factors, including: Occupational exposure to carcinogens Obesity Cigarette smoking Diabetes Alcohol use Hepatitis B and C infection Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection Infection by H. pylori bacteria What is strange is that gastrointestinal cancers are increasing in younger people, and the incidence rate is growing faster than other early-onset cancers. For example, colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for people ages 20–49, and the average age of diagnosis has dropped significantly in a short amount of time. In fact, people born between 1981–1996 are twice as likely to develop colorectal cancer than those born in 1950. What is going on? Why is this occurring? As a result, have screening guidelines changed? Listen and learn as host Tim Jordan interviews Xavier Llor, M.D., Ph.D. about this issue. Ep 24Is There Racism in Maternal and Child Health in the United States?

Many citizens of the U.S. think that they have the best health care system in the world. I have bad news for them: The U.S does not. It has one of the worst health care systems in the world. Of similar developed countries, the U.S. has the most expensive, broken, reactive, sick care system that yields some of the worst patient outcomes. Our sick care system has little to do with health. Maternal and child death rates are often used as an indicator of the quality of medical care in countries around the world. So how is the U.S. doing in that area? It has the highest maternal and infant death rates among comparable developed countries. Further, the survival rates for Black American mothers and their infants are even worse! Black American women across the income spectrum and from all walks of life are dying from preventable pregnancy-related complications at three to four times the rate of white women, while the death rate for black infants is at least twice that of infants born to white mothers. We Americans should be angry and embarrassed! What’s more, Black American mothers are twice as likely to have a baby who dies by their first birthday. Although other women of color also experience an elevated risk of poor outcomes—notably in American Indian, and Alaska Native (AIAN), and some Latina communities—available data show that racial disparities between Black Americans and whites are the starkest. What is going on? In this episode, our host, Tim Jordan, interviews three young experts in the field to find out what is going on: 1) Duane Herron, 2) Tiffiny Jones, and 3) Elizabeth Williams. Ep 23The Current Challenges Faced by Lake Erie: An Interview with Sandy Bihn, Lake Erie Waterkeeper

People think like this: If it is not in my “backyard” and not affecting me and/or my family, I really do not pay much attention to it and really do not care. Well, this is an issue that impacts at least 12 million of you. That’s how many of you get your drinking water from the Lake Erie watershed. Do you care about your health? Do you care about the quality of your drinking water? You should care enough to listen to this podcast. Lake Erie is like the canary in the coal mine when it comes to the health of the Great Lakes. More than 30 million people rely on the Great Lakes for drinking water – 10% of the U.S. population and 30% of the Canadian population. Without safe drinking water, many of us are doomed. In this episode, our host, Tim Jordan, interviews Sandy Bihn, a Lake Erie Waterkeeper and one of the most knowledgeable people about the current challenges facing Lake Erie. Listen and learn! Ep 22The Palestinian Issue. Should I Care? An Interview with Maha Zeidan.

On October 7, 2024, Hamas terrorists from the Gaza Strip killed at least 1,139 Israelis and injured many more (Aljazeera News, 2024). Hamas also took more than 250 from Israel to the Gaza Strip, including older people, women, children, and men. According to the Washington Post (2024), 84 hostages are believed to be still alive and in captivity. Since the attack this past October, 112 hostages have been freed. In retaliation, the Israeli army killed at least 36,439, including women and more than 15,000 children. More than 10,000 are still missing (Aljazeera, News, 2024). Much of the population of Gaza has been displaced and the people there are facing a man-made famine. Israel's defense minister has said publicly that Israel will stamp out all signs of life of Hamas and look for an alternative local governing body for Gaza instead of Hamas. Many Americans (maybe even you), think like this: These problems between Israel and other countries around it have been going on for a very long time. I really do not understand these issues. Therefore, if it is not affecting me and it is not in my backyard, I really do not pay attention much to what happens. Should Americans care? Listen first and then form your opinion. Ep 21The Costs of Being an Informal, Family Caregiver: An Interview with Tina and Tyrone Layson

In the U.S., informal, family caregiving is on the rise. In 2015, there were 43.5 million, informal care givers. In 2023, there were more than 100 million adults who are informal care givers. The direct cost of caregiving is nearly $44 million dollars, given the loss of 650,000 jobs and approximately 800,000 individuals who report absenteeism from work. Providing care to others is personally costly. According to research, 70% to 76% experience sleep problems. Only 23% of informal caregivers report "good" mental health, and 40% say that their caregiving responsibilities negatively impact their stress levels. Caregiving duties can harm workers' lives. Balancing work with caregiving responsibilities puts a strain on caregivers in ways that negatively affect their social lives, marriages, employment prospects, working lives, and income. Many caregivers have to take off work to meet additional caregiving demands. Approximately 41% of caregivers report low overall well-being, about 32% more than non-caregivers. Only 1 in 4 caregivers report good physical health; 1 in 5 rate themselves highly at eating healthy and exercising; and only 1 in 3 say they keep up with annual physicals and routine doctor appointments. This inattention to their own needs can introduce health risks for informal caregivers. Listen as host, Tim Jordan, explores the costs of being an informal caregiver with Tina and Tyrone Layson. What are the costs that they experienced? What helpful advice to they have for us? Let’s find out! Resources for this podcast: Article: (2024). Ep 20Living and Coping With Life-Threatening Illness: An Interview with Jacob and Beanna Martinez

Every day in this country, hundreds of patients of all ages receive bad news from their health care providers. What is it like to be diagnosed with a life-threatening illness? What do you think about? What are your emotions? How does you cope with the associated losses such as a loss of energy, function, a job, or a career? How do others treat you? Many patients in this condition say that it feels like they have a “scarlet letter” etched on their forehead but that only others can see it. They believe that others communicate with them and treat them differently. Many of the patient’s “friends” stay away because they do not know what to say. Patients in this condition say that their social life becomes much smaller, and that “superficial” friendships are dropped in favor of spending time with those who really count. Patients with life-threatening illnesses indicate that health care providers focus too much on medical and physical interventions, give too little information, appear uncomfortable talking about death, and do not include family members in conversations. Furthermore, informal caregivers (e.g. family member) report exhaustion and a lack of information. The informal care givers say that health care providers do not appreciate the impact of the illness on their lives and rarely consult them. Family members of the patient wish that health care providers would tell them when death is inevitable and would avoid telling them about futile medical treatments. Listen as host, Tim Jordan, explores these and other issues with Jacob and Beanna Martinez. How have they learned to live with and cope with life-threatening illness? Listen and find out. Ep 19The Oceans are Hotter Than They Have Been Since the 1970's. Should I Care? An Interview with Annalisa Bracco, Ph.D.

At the end of February 2024, I talked to people in Ohio’s snowbelt region, and they all said the same thing, “I think the snowplow guy maybe came twice.” Only twice! Wow! The snowplow guys probably liked the lack of snow! You see, in major parts of the U.S., winter never arrived. According to preliminary data from AccuWeather, this winter was the warmest on record in the U.S thanks to El Nino and our warming climate. This past summer, it was really hot in many places of the world for extended time periods. Should we care? Let's ask our guest. In this March 2024 episode, host Tim Jordan explores the issue of our water and land growing warmer with special guest, Annalisa Bracco, Ph.D. Listen, learn, subscribe, and share. Thanks! Ep 18Episode # 18: Redlining, Racism, Food Scarcity, and Obesity. Related? An Interview with Anthony Goodwin

Let me ask you a question. Are these things related? Historic redlining, racism, food scarcity, and obesity. Are people who live in previously redlined areas worse off, and do they have worse health outcomes than those who live elsewhere? In this February 2024 episode, host Tim Jordan explores these questions and more with Anthony Goodwin, the young man who did this research and answered these questions. Ep 17Episode 17 of Grass Roots Health:What is in our Water may be Killing Us! An Interview with Jamie DeWitt, Ph.D.

Were you aware that we are literally “swimming” in a sea of chemicals that may be killing us? These chemicals are everywhere and in everything including our air, food, water, medical devices, medical implants, non-stick pans, personal care products, stain-resistant carpet and furniture, cardboard packaging, building materials, and firefighting foam. These chemicals called “forever chemicals” or PFAS (i.e., per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) were discovered in the 1930’s and were not regulated (for some strange reason) by the U.S. EPA until the early 2000s. Meanwhile, millions of unsuspecting Americans (maybe even you) have been exposed to them repeatedly. These chemicals are called “forever chemicals” because of how slowly they break down in the environment and in our bodies. Researchers have reported that exposure to certain levels of these PFAS chemicals increases human risk of cancer, decreases fertility, and damages our immune systems. In this January 2024 episode, host Tim Jordan explores this topic with one of the most knowledgeable people in the United States: Jamie DeWitt, Ph.D., Director of the Environmental Health Center at Oregon State University. Ep 16Episode # 16: Death Should Not Be Feared - An Interview with Nicole Angelique Kerr

Most Americans do not like to think about or talk about death. Death is like the “elephant in the middle of the room.” Everyone sees the elephant and knows that it is there, but no one says a peep! We prefer to avoid the topic. We certainly do not want to jinx ourselves! Death is viewed negatively as loss. When someone close to us dies (be it a person or a companion animal), we feel sadness and grief. But what if death is opposite of all that? What if death is very positive? Maybe instead of feeling sad, we should be happy when person or pet dies. In this December 2023 episode, host Tim Jordan explores this topic with his guest, Nicole Angelique Kerr: “Why Death Should Not Be Feared.” Nicole has been dead. Yet she is back to tell us about what she saw and heard while dead. Be sure to listen to this podcast so you will know what is awaiting you on the "other side." In this August 2023 episode, host Tim Jordan explores the topic, “Is the mental health of shooters to blame for mass shootings? His guest for this thought-provoking interview is Dr. Lisa Pescara Kovach. Fact: This year (2023), is on pace to become the deadliest year for mass shootings in recent history. A mass shooting is defined as 4 or more people shot, wounded, or killed. Fact: Public mass casualty events are becoming more common. Fact: In a given year, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness and 1 in 6 young people experience a major depressive episode Fact: The vast majority (e.g., more than 90%) of people with mental health conditions are not violent. Only 3%–5% of violent acts can be attributed to them. In contrast, people with a severe mental illness are over 10 times more likely to be victims of a violent crime than the general population. Fact: After every mass shooting, certain politicians, especially those with ties to the National Rifle Association, and pundits say that the mental health of the shooter is to blame. Is the mental health of each shooter to blame? Listen and find out. Ep 11Episode # 11: When Gun Violence Becomes Personal - An Interview with Rhonda Hart

In this Independence Day 2023 special episode, Tim Jordan, host, explores the topic, “When Gun Violence Becomes Personal.” In the early morning hours of Friday May 18, 2018, gun violence became personal for Rhonda Hart. She did not ask for it; did not deserve it; and certainly did not want it! In a first period art class at Santa Fe High School (Texas), her 14-year-old daughter, Kimberly, was shot to death along with seven other students and two teachers. Thirteen others were wounded that day. Two armed police officers were in the school every day. The officers exchanged fire with the 17-year-old male shooter (a student at the school) but were unable to stop him from killing ten people. One officer was wounded. Eventually, the shooter surrendered to the police officer who was not wounded and a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper. Since 2018, Texas judges have ruled that the shooter has been mentally incompetent to stand trial. Texas is rated last in the U.S. in access to mental health care (Mental Health America, 2023). Listen as our host and special guest, Rhonda Hart, talk about Kimberly, grief, advocacy, and gun violence. Will gun violence become personal for you someday? Rhonda believes that it will.
