La primera función fue el 28 de febrero en Vélez, repitieron en el Amalfitani al día siguiente, para después recalar en Mar del Plata y Rosario. El último show fue de nuevo en Liniers. Ese día la capacidad del estadio rebalsó. El efecto contagio había surtido efecto. Quienes no habían ido, querían ir; quienes habían ya presenciado alguno de los shows deseaban estar de nuevo. La historia de la gira latinoamericana de Queen demuestra por qué esto era así. En México debieron cancelarse seis de las presentaciones previstas, Pinochet no autorizó la actuación en Chile, en Brasil se suspendieron los shows de Rio y Porto Alegre, y en Venezuela otras dos debido a la declaración oficial de duelo por la muerte de un ex presidente. Sin embargo, la apuesta del grupo, más allá de estas improvisaciones impensadas en la actualidad (en épocas de preventas, early birds, seguros y ejércitos de abogados), fue más que exitosa. Había un antecedente en el país de una estrella internacional presentándose en un estadio. En 1973 el guitarrista mexicano Carlos Santana tocó con su banda en el Gasómetro, el viejo estadio de madera de San Lorenzo en Avenida La Plata. Pero pesar de su prestigio y fama, Santana no tenía la repercusión del conjunto inglés y en ese momento de su carrera su búsqueda musical estaba girando hacia la fusión, hacia el jazz-rock. La falta de experiencia hizo que el escenario se pusiera en medio de la cancha y que no hubiera público en el campo. El espectador más cercano estaba, con suerte, a 40 metros de los artistas. El sonido -la falta de él- fue otro problema. En 1981 Queen llegaba al país con ese sólo antecedente. El espectáculo que trajeron no era parecido a nada de lo que se había visto en el país. Un enorme escenario, parrillas de luces móviles, una potencia de sonido descomunal, fuegos artificiales y trucos, una puesta escénica trabajada, himnos inmortales y un performer como Freddie Mercury. La capacidad interpretativa -pero especialmente la escénica- del vocalista de Queen superó las expectativas. Ahí estaba, frente a más de 50 mil personas, imponiendo las reglas. Se jugaba a lo que él quería. Un juego que no tenía exposición pública en el país, que era silenciado y reprimido. No modificó su propuesta pese al clima represivo, a la censura. Una de las particularidades de sus actuaciones en el país fue que en las cinco tocaron un tema algo perdido en su discografía y que muchos argentinos no conocían: Get Down, Make Love. Se trataba de un tema carnal, erótico y explícito, con referencias directas al sexo oral. Play El empresario que trajo al grupo era un viejo conocedor del terreno de las visitas musicales en Argentina. Había sido representante de Joan Manuel Serrat en el país, año a año hacía desembarcar a Julio Iglesias y, entre otros, había conseguido un suceso fenomenal con Demis Roussos un tiempo antes. Alfredo Capalbo desconocía el mundo del rock pero pensó que traer a Queen al país era una apuesta segura. No se equivocó. Ricardo Pollera, el hijo de su socio en Mar del Plata, declaró que con ese solo recital su padre ganó un millón doscientos mil dólares. De Capalbo se dice que lo que le permitió hacer este negocio fenomenal fue su cercanía con los militares argentinos. Diego Armando Maradona junto a Queen Diego Armando Maradona junto a Queen Queen no demostró mayores pruritos respecto de quienes gobernaban en los lugares en que ellos se presentaban. Esta gira sudamericana es un buen ejemplo; en su grilla inicial pasaba por tres países gobernados por dictaduras. Años después también se presentó en Sudáfrica pese a las sanciones internacionales debido al Apartheid. Se suele sostener que los músicos de Queen se reunieron con el presidente argentino de facto, Roberto Viola. Lo cierto es que Viola todavía no había asumido esa función. Era integrante de la Junta, jefe del Ejército, pero todavía el presidente era Jorge Rafael Videla. Su asunción se produciría semanas después de la visita de los británicos. Viola tenía un perfil más político y creía que era conveniente una ligera apertura. En ese plan, e instigado por su hijo -que había sido jugador de fútbol en la Primera B-, se reunió en su casa con Freddie Mercury, Brian May y John Deacon. Roger Taylor, el baterista, faltó a la cit
