The goal is to get the racket into the hitting position as soon and efficiently as feasible. Coach Ben provides a simple analogy to help players understand the proper technique: "Answer the phone." He says players should visualize putting their racket exactly at their ear, like they would when answering a phone, as soon as the ball is in the air. This positions the racket well for an excellent overhead shot. This tip is intended to assist players shorten their backswing and get into a hitting stance faster, resulting in more successful overhead shots. Coach Ben recommends that players use this strategy the next time they're on the court. S24 Ep 5610 Minutes of Tennis: The POWER of the NonDominant Hand
Hey, welcome. You are tuned into the Atlanta Tennis Podcast. Here we talk about everything that has to do with tennis. Whether you are an advanced, intermediate, or beginner, we have something for you. Today in the episode, we venture into the captivating domain of tennis with Justin Yeo, an Australian-born but currently residing in Puerto Rico, a coaching expert in the game of tennis. We discuss the importance of a non-dominant hand in tennis and explain why it is an important thing that is unfortunately often neglected. Let us walk you through tennis skills and strategies and share some tennis tips with you.Today’s Guest:Justin Yeo - the famous coach at the worldwide level, spoke on the less acknowledged aspect, the significance of the non-dominating hand in tennis. By focusing on how ready position to shot preparation can be improved by even the smallest adjustments, its importance in serving to balance out, we will see how any little variables may lead to great variations on the court.Episode Highlight:The Importance of the Non-Dominant Hand: To serve, he says that shifting the non-dominant hand to the upper region is crucial. That is the non-dominant hand. On the 27th and 15th filings, it appears important to steer the power development in the bodies along the hands, as well as to support a shoal of dunking.Technical Insights: Justin’s movement involves rotating the body towards the hand of the racket holding the head up. The ready stance now requires the back arm to help turn the body so that rotation and space can be used well.Practical Tips: For non-dominant hand users wanting to work out the proper placement of their stroke guide, he recommends that the left hand in the right dominating people's ready position stay wide to avoid making quite some rotation. Further, he explains, use your free hand to bear the weight of the racket right after the ball is hit during the execution of the follow-through to assist in making the swing more powerful. Here's what you'll learn:The surprising truth: The majority of mistakes are caused by problems with the non-dominant hand rather than poor footwork or technique. The magic touch of champions: Players like Roger Federer and John McEnroe had remarkable non-dominant hand control, which allowed for unrivaled shotmaking.Beyond basic grip: While good grip and swing are important, the feel and posture of the non-dominant hand are critical for accurate ball direction.Revolutionize your warm-up: Give up the short-court practice! In order to get an appropriate hand extension for longer rallies, Justin advises starting at the baseline. This episode is perfect for:Players at all levels are looking to improve their touch and control.Coaches are seeking new techniques to emphasize the value of non-dominant hand usage.Anyone looking to obtain a better knowledge of the complexities of tennis.Stay tuned for great suggestions to help you improve your game, and remember to subscribe and share with your friends and teammates. S24 Ep 4310 Minutes of Tennis: Get the Fundamentals RIGHT From the START
Hello, tennis lovers! The Atlanta Tennis Podcast, powered by GoTennis, is back with another exciting episode. Today, our host, Shaun, discusses the value of tennis fundamentals with Justin Yeo, a highly sought-after coach from Puerto Rico. Whether you are ready to start mastering the ready stance or struggling with what your non-dominant hand should be doing, Justin is joining us today to provide actionable advice that resonates with all levels of players. Why are tennis basics so important? Click play and enjoy what Justin has to offer.About Justin YeoBefore getting into the episode, let's introduce our special guest for today, Justin Yeo, a tennis coach recognized for his great grasp of technique and player development. Justin has quickly become well known in tennis for his ability to articulate complex movement mechanics in a simple, easy-to-understand, user-friendly way. He currently works from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and is originally from Australia. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player, Justin thinks your tennis playing skills can be improved if you’re obsessed with learning the skills that he unlocks in this episode.Quick Recap of The EpisodeIn this episode, we return to the basics (something that Justin insists is essential for all players).Below are some highlights of our conversation-About low stance: Justin stated the game usually starts with a low stance. Everything else will ultimately be called travel if you are in a different position from play onset. He offers some advice on how to develop the ideal position, allowing you to keep your body harmonized and your mind sharp so that you can perform well. The power of the split step: Discover how a gymnast does it and practice on your break. This will improve your movement on the court, making you faster and better defensively. This basic move can change the game whether you play defense or set up an offensive shot.Utilizing non-dominant hand: Your non-dominant hand is vital to stabilizing your shots. Listen in as Justin explains how you can leverage this often-ignored quality of your game to improve shot consistency and control.Utilizing forward swings: Stop worrying about how everything looks up to the top. Rather, focus on the forward swing. Why? Ultimately, that is an indicator of where the ball will go. He explains what happens when we focus on forward motion, and every golfer can hit a more solid, powerful shot.Unit turn and shoulder rotation: Another gem from the episode is the emphasis on a proper unit turn vs. an improper shoulder rotation. Doing this part correctly leads to easy and efficient body movements, which translate into more accurate shots.Fixing the normal culprits: Justin and Shaun discuss how several adults, especially those well-known for years, usually slack on their essentials. By adjusting our ready stance and utilizing sound footwork, Justin covers how to be your most match-ready at once as you were (for the next few years) when you truly needed it.Want More Tennis Insights?Don't forget to click the follow button if you're enjoying the content from Atlanta Tennis Podcast. S24 Ep 3510 Minutes of Tennis: Do Tennis Players REALLY Have to Grunt??
Episode #35 Season 24: Shaun Boyce & Justin YeoBreathing is generally important in any exercise but its importance increases incredibly in physically taxing sports, like tennis. Grunts just make the inhale- exhale process easier. Nobody really doubts the functionality of the act particularly during service, However, the associated sounds receive cancellation from fans, coaches, referees and players alike. In this 10 minutes of Tennis episode, powered by GoTennis, Shaun Boyce sits with Justin Yeo to resolve the debate on grunts. Irritating they might be, but are they important for tennis players? In a comical fashion, Justin Yeo provides the answer in less than 10 seconds,”Yes!!”Meet Our GuestJustin Yeo: Our very own, Justin Yeo is the australian pro-tennis coach. Yeo is currently working in Atlanta. The diverse tennis cultural difference of Australia and Atlanta provides Yeo with an unique understanding and perspective. His coaching philosophy revolves around building the playing style around the skills and habits of the players. Therefore, he is meticulous in detailing everything that goes on in the field.Highlights of the Episode Press the play button to uncover the interesting discussion on Grunts in modern tennis.Changes of Soundscapes in Modern Tennis: Yeo explains that seemingly modern tennis is much more vibrant with sounds than classical tennis of the 50s or 60s. However, tennis has always been noisy. The sounds didn’t find their way to the audience earlier due to lack of microphone and cameras around the court. The availability of these technologies have made these sounds audible now. But the sounds of exhalation were always there, as a part and parcel of the game. So, the compliance of the sounds are nothing new.Importance of Breathing: During the intense moments of the tennis match, players require energy to fire up their shots. Breathing not only relaxes the mind but also ensures supply of Oxygen to the brain and muscles to ensure their function properly. Unfortunately, many players forget to breathe during the pressured moments.Impact of Grunts: Even when players are repeatedly asked to open their mouth in intense sections of the game, they forget to breathe properly even with an open mouth. While gruthing, they push the carbon dioxide saturated air out and make the sound. This ensures that the diaphragm is open and fresh air flows into the system. This act alone can reduce the pressure on the players and make them focus and their shots more powerful.Physiology and Psychological Aspects of Grunts: Shaun and Justin converse regarding the psychological impacts of grunts. Not only grunts help in emotional control and focus development, but there are implications that it helps in synchronizing breathing with the timing of ball movements. Key Takeaways of the Episode:Discover how-Grunts are different for male and female tennis playersPlayers like- Venus William, Maria Sharapova, Federer and Nadal has managed thisRules regarding keeping the noise down effects the playersGrunts can actually put more stability and strength in shots.Whether you prefer a noisy game or a quiet one, do not forget to inhale and exhale during the match. Prior to this, he has worked with some of the top Atlanta tennis clubs and has 20 years long coaching experience with juniors. He is also a USPTA certified coach. Highlights of the Episode1.Types of Tennis CoachesJustine describes three broad types of coaches, one is likely to encounter.Independent Coaches: They are versatile and flexible in nature.Usually works with players of all ages and skill levels.Country Club Coaches: They are often tied with a single club. They shoulder various responsibilities, depending on their positions. Their expertises includes- administrations, planning events and on court training. Though with additional responsibilities, the scope of actual coaching is very limited. High-Performance Coaches: They specialize in developing professional players. Most of the time they work with skill development in young players to improve their performance to the next level. These days they are also working with adults for continuous improvement of skills. Their goal is to bring high quality performance out of the players. 2.Significance of Proper Alignment Yeo explains that a player must have a clear goal and understanding of their own requirements. Before settling with a coach, they should consider the background of the trainer and ensure proper sinking of their needs with the coach’s speciality. It is important in crafting tailored approaches- from grip techniques to adjusting focus, everything must cater towards exploring the potential of the aspirant.3.Challenges in the TennisThriving Backdrop of AtlantaAtlanta is one of the largest tennis centers in the world. This unique city provides plenty of opportunity for coaches and aspiring tennis players. However, the challenges are also fierce here: Lack of attempts from USTA, USPTA, GPTA and other organizations to create centralized documentation on certified tennis coaches. Unawareness of the existing database on the part of general people, is equally challenging. Lack of personal networking among coaches to limit word of mouth referral systems.Around 40% of the coaches are not certified. Many certified coaches do not want to keep their certificates up to date due to various issues, like- fees.Takeaways of the EpisodePlausible Solutions and AlternativesGoTennis launched the Coach Finder feature to connect potential players with certified coaches in Atlanta. Their discussion centers around the benefits of a well-developed centralized system like this to the players, parents and coaches. The conversation explores how such attempts can help GPTA and how a possible reformation of GPTA can help in the networking of coaches around Atlanta. They discuss how organizations like the GPTA (Georgia Professional Tennis Association) and USTA (United States Tennis Association) can support a more unified community through education, networking, and certification.A Change of CulturesThe episode’s ultimate suggestion is that collaboration is a must for improvement of Atlanta tennis. The guests and host advocate for a data driven referral system that can easily connect proper coaches with students in terms of locations, skill level and preferred goals.Connect and Share your Experiences with UsIf you find the podcast on finding the right coach informative, then please encourage us with your subscription. S24 Ep 27Tennis Tip: “Holding Your Return”
Season #24 Episode: #27 Shaun Boyce and Ben HestleyIn this episode of Gotennis’s Atlanta Tennis Podcast, Ben Hestly dives deep into the often-overlooked but effective strategy of holding return. This skill is crucial in ensuring success particularly if you are competing at the B or C or Junior level. Join Shaun, as he listens to the Ben Hestley tennis tip.Our Expert:Ben Hestley: He is a USPTA certified tennis professional coach. He is currently working with the Bull Shark Sports. GPTA named Ben the Independent Tennis Professional of the Year, 2022 for creating a tennis program at neighborhood facilities for nearly 150 kids. He has huge experience in working at the junior level.Understanding the Efficacy of Holding The ReturnHold return: Holding your return is a strategy when your opponent is at service and you try to score by breaking the service. It is a technique where you can use an opportunity meant for your opponent to your advantage.Potency: Holding return can be effective at all levels but it is especially potent at the B, C or Junior level tennis. At these stages of tennis, the service is often the least developed tennis skill in players. So, once your opponent has done the serve and then a powerful and well-placed return can immediately put the server at the baseline and stop him/her from further attack and be on defense.Other ImplicationsMastering your hold on return cultivates aggressive mindset in returnsIt facilitates attacking mentality, confidence and consistency in all levels of playersJoin UsJoin us to get such useful tips for tennis to upgrade your game. In today's insightful episode when Shaun Boyce takes us to the USPTA certified elite coach, Kenyon Generette-Oliver who explains the importance of selecting the appropriate shot from your field position.Greet Our GuestKenyon Generette- Oliver: Kenyon is an USPTA Elite and PTR Tennis Professional. He has an extensive career of over 25 years in teaching juniors. This Atlanta tennis pro is currently working with Agnes Scott Tennis Center, Briarlake Church, and Clarkston. What to ExpectKenyon explains that being in the right spot of the field is very important to play the right shot. Sometimes, the ball's position forces us to be in a position where our shot selection can work against us. He continues that our response to the ball influences the reaction and response time of our opponent. Therefore, aligning your shots properly with your position in the field is important. He gives two common but crucial examples- Handling Low Ball to Deep Corner: A low low ball (below the net) is often hitted aggressively to send toward the net player. But according to Oliver, this is a mistake and can lead to a point for the opponent. He explains that this type of ball should be delivered to the player at the farthest back less aggressively. This ensures more reaction time for you and a potential defensive shot from your opponent that can result in a point in your favor. High Ball to the Net Player: A high ball (a "juicier" shot) is usually sent deep to the open court. But it provides the opponent with valuable time for recovery and for properly planned response. Kenyon suggests the exact opposite treatment of high ball. He encourages the net player to hit the high ball to the net player instead of the player standing at the back of the court, to shorten the response time. This strategy puts more pressure on the net player and can lead to a winning shot for your team.Be One of UsIf you like our video, then like and share it with others.
