Tuk-Tuk trip from Kenya to Cape Town for Wildlife Rangers

Are they a real production company? No. Have they made a documentary before? No. Are they prepared to drive 2 Tuk-Tuks from the Equator to Cape Town?… Ummm, that would be a 'No' as well. Having spent time making videos in some of Kenya’s incredible wild spaces Robbie, Ivo, Jasper and Josh realised the people protecting these spaces were struggling. The Rangers. These heroes help maintain the balance between communities and wildlife but as the tourism industry has taken a hit due to the pandemic, so has their funding. Armed with only filming equipment and a microphone, how could they help? The answer was clear. Spend the last of their savings on two tuk-tuks, cover them in sponsorship stickers and make a documentary driving from Kenya to Cape Town in these ridiculous three-wheeled machines. This interview will leave you in stitches… and totally inspired. Tuk South website · Donate for rangers

Small businesses are the backbone of South Africa’s economy. They have an enormous impact, providing a livelihood for many while advancing financial inclusion to reduce poverty and boost prosperity. Vaccine Myth Busting

It’s been over 440 days since the pandemic really took hold in South Africa. Yes, that’s how long it has been since the country went into the initial lockdown. Crazy just saying that out loud. But we have made massive strides and are now in the second phase of the vaccine program in South Africa. For me vaccinations are the next step in getting back to some sort of normal. But some are still quite sceptical, so I’ve invited Dr Saul Johnson to join us in a discussion about vaccines. Dr Johnson has a medical degree from the Wits, and a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from Columbia University in New York. He lectures extensively on epidemiology and research methodology and has worked as a doctor, epidemiologist, researcher and project manager in various African countries.

Thuli Madonsela sits down with the Good Things Guy

We’ve just marked a year of the lockdown in South Africa and what a year it's been. What we have been through - and are still going through is absolutely tragic. This thing can feel so overwhelming and incredibly traumatic. The last year has been filled with so much grief. We have lost loved ones, businesses, incomes, health and every ounce of what we used to call normal. It’s been really tough but as I always say… in times of tragedy, always look for the helpers as they will always be there and they are the heroes we need to celebrate. And my guest today is not only a hero but someone who many look up to. She helped draft the final constitution of South Africa in 1996. She was the Public Protector of South Africa for over 7 years, she was named one of TIME 100’s most influential people in the world and is now holding a chair in Social Justice at Stellenbosch University. Advocate and Professor Thuli Madonsela has pushed for the last year to make sure that no one gets left behind, as the country works on a recovery plan post COVID. And the Prof has joined Brent Lindeque to chat about her social justice journey and what she is currently busy with. Follow Thuli Madonsela on Twitter

Leroy Merlin - Creating Jobs in a Global Pandemic

If you have always had a love for DIY projects or you developed a love during the lockdown, you will agree that walking into a store dedicated to DIY projects is like being a kid in a candy store. The pandemic inspired so many people to take up projects in their homes, from redecorating rooms and revamping the garden to repurposing rooms into offices, schools and gyms. We were told to stay home, and so we made our homes useful to our needs. The need for DIY-related shopping was at an all-time high, so it was no surprise when we learned that a new store was opening for residents of Northern Johannesburg and its surrounds. Leroy Merlin's newest store will be hosting its grand opening in Fourways on 26 March, to the sheer delight of local DIYers! Leroy Merlin Fourways is the 4th of its kind in Johannesburg. It specialises in construction, hardware, kitchen, bathroom, home decor and garden products, 65% of which are locally sourced. Purpose vs Profit: How has business changed in our 'new normal'?

For the past 50 years, the primary role of business in society has been to maximise shareholder return, a consequence of Milton Friedman's seminal article in the New York Times in 1970 in which he stated that "any other use of shareholders money was irresponsible". Given the current state of the world, the pandemic, with climate change, global warming, depletion of our natural resources, over population, catastrophic pollution and growing inequality to name a few, it feels like the idea of business being a force for good, and playing a bigger role in society beyond financial maximisation, is the obvious thing to do. Unfortunately, many business leaders don’t see it this way. The world of business is about making money and “purpose” is often seen as getting in the way of making money. It’s perceived to be a “feel good” distraction that takes the eye off the ball, costs money, and erodes the carefully crafted and sought-after profit number. This number is the sole purpose many businesses exist, and it is the most significant factor that business leaders are judged on. So, when business leaders see the word “purpose”, their immediate assumption is that it is going to cost them money, making their profit number that much more difficult to achieve. Mike Middleton - Founder and CEO of Marty McFly - and Andrew Ross - CEO of Chaos Theory - have joined Brent Lindeque to chat about where business is going in our 'new normal'.

Driving Hope during COVID-19

#DriveHope was created from a desperate cry for help in a post on Facebook. When Karen Denny, Divisional Executive for Liberty’s Digital Marketing team, first read it, her heart sank. An elderly woman had anonymously poured her heart out, searching for help after she was sexually assaulted by a relative. The woman’s family and friends couldn’t offer her the support she needed, she had lost her job because of the COVID-19 lockdown, and her Unemployment Insurance Fund payments were still outstanding. Reading the post was an emotional rollercoaster – the sadness surrounding the woman’s situation, the outrage over her suffering and inability to find help, and finally knowing that the Liberty #DriveHope Squad could somehow assist. “I remember when I first called her, she couldn’t stop crying. I told her – I promised her – that we were going to help,” said Denny. The physical distance created by the national lockdown was a challenge, but she and Liberty’s #DriveHopeSquad, a team of internal colleagues – knew that at the very least, they could help the woman get medical attention, both physically and psychologically, and provide her with food to sustain her until she could get back on her feet. This was just one of the hundreds of random acts of kindness that the squad has undertaken since the campaign began. Good Things Guy Brent Lindeque chats to Karen to find out more about the #DriveHope initiative.

We, the People, can turn it around - & Brent’s inspired

Hugh Masekela’s Thuma Mina (Send Me) – the People’s Version was released on Friday in honour of Heritage month. Thuma Mina is a call to the people of South Africa to stand up collectively for change. In the song, Hugh Masekela pens the lyrics “I wanna be there when the people start to turn it around”, which rings true to the very first words in South Africa’s Constitution, “We, the People”. The people of South Africa are facing tremendous challenges in the face of COVID-19, such as severe poverty, a compromised economy, lack of access to healthcare and education, corruption and gender-based violence. Together, with a little help from some friends, Constitution Hill in partnership with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, have joined forces to produce a collaborative re-working: The People's Version – of the late, great Masekela’s anthemic Thuma Mina. The People’s Version strives to mobilise the citizens of South Africa into action, in support and empowerment of one another. “It is not the size of the problems we must take into account, but rather our will, the people’s will, to create and manifest solutions, and our preparedness to scale those solutions across our diverse South African communities,” says Dawn Robertson, CEO of Constitution Hill. Dawn and Mabusha Masekela - of the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, join Brent to talk about the song; about South Africa and about ConHill. Constitution Hill website

Friends, Luke Tollman and Elijah Greenhill, had always had a keen interest in innovating, inspiring and giving back. Tollman advises that, “This site and platform is a result of countless hours of work and effort to make sure that each and every person that comes across UNLOCK has the best experience possible.” Both Luke and Elijah join Brent Lindeque to chat about their amazing new lockdown business. Pushed into Purpose - you're one decision away from a whole new life

Devon Brough’s life has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. The son of a member of the 70's all-girl band Clout should've been living his best life, but has spent the majority of his adult existence caged in a prison of fear, engulfed in a darkness so dense he could barely see himself putting one foot in front of the other. An unending battle with alcoholism and addiction held Devon in a crippling cycle of resentment, shame and guilt. He felt separate and apart from life… and the people in it. Many times he just wanted to escape reality and hide from the world. But Devon is a survivor and his mess has become his message as he now coaches South Africans into finding themselves and living their purpose! “Looking back at my life so far, the darkest times and places have become the most beautiful. Why? Well, because there is something quite magical about the dark. That’s where things grow.” Listen to what could be the most inspirational thing you hear today!

Ubuntu Beds: Providing safe accommodation to healthcare-workers

We have all seen how COVID-19 has crippled the Italian health system. Lombardy, a region in Northern Italy, was the epicentre of their Coronavirus pandemic. When Kim Whitaker asked a doctor from Lombardy what they would've done differently at the start of the pandemic, he responded, “I would have arranged accommodation for the doctors and nurses in the now-closed hotels.” Healthcare workers were exhausted and unable to return home for fear of infecting their families, as a result, they were sleeping poorly and burning out. From this, Ubuntu Beds was founded in South Africa… and Kim - who has herself been COVID-19 positive back in March - has joined Brent Lindeque to speak about the journey. Ubuntu Beds website

South African humour in the times of COVID-19

Kim Nicola Stephens is fast becoming our favourite author during South Africa’s COVID-19 lockdown… and she's just served up another gem! Kim has given us the top 10 middle-class quarantine categories, a hilarious depiction of how confusing Level 4 actually is; the beauty truths of the 'burbs during the lockdown; the runners versus smokers debacle and now she weighs in (hilariously) about how everyone in South Africa has suddenly become an expert on nearly everything. South Africans have a way of getting through the toughest times, usually with a side dish of humour, and these quarantine stories might be the funniest things you will read. Kim joins Brent Lindeque on this week’s JacPod podcast.
