My First Panic Attack
Lily Cornell Silver, mental health activist and daughter of the late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, recounts her less-than-conventional childhood – — on the road, missing school to go to rock concerts, and learning to play poker on the Alice in Chains tour bus. Lily talks candidly about her early introduction to the world of mental health, after a harrowing panic attack at just 12-years-old. “I felt the heat flood my body. I was sweating. I was shaking. And my 12-year-old brain immediately went to, like, I have a brain tumor or like there's something wrong with my heart or like I'm literally about to die.” Plus, how the pandemic inspired her to start Mind Wide Open, her IGTV interview series about mental health. Weird Parenting Wins
Hillary Frank, author and host of the award-winning parenting podcast The Longest Shortest Time, takes us on a journey to the wonderful world of weird parenting. You won’t find any of these tips in a traditional parenting book. Instead, Hillary says, weird parenting is real advice from real parents born out of moments of sheer desperation. “One of my favorites is a game called ‘What's on My Butt?’ You lie down face-down on the couch or on the floor, and then you tell them to get some random object and place it on your butt. And then you have to guess what the thing is and the longer it takes you to guess, the longer you get to lie down.” You can follow Hillary Frank on Twitter @hillaryfrank and on Instagram @thisishillaryfrank. Meet My Imaginary Friend
Actor Jay Ellis takes us back to his childhood – moving all around the country, going on adventures with his imaginary friend, and dreaming of being an FBI agent/karate master/football champion one day. He tells the story of one of his first interactions with the police, when, after toilet-papering a classmate’s house with best friend Joe, the pair are detained and berated by cops for more than 30 minutes, “as if we had just robbed a store.” Jay says the experience forever changed his relationship with law enforcement. “I didn't get to have those teenage years in the same way that some of my non-Black peers and friends got to have. I was looked at as a man and thought to be dangerous, even though I was a boy.” Support the show by checking out our sponsors! Former Jersey girl, producer and writer, Jaime Primak Sullivan now lives in Alabama with her husband and three kids. For her, teaching her kids southern manners was a must. In this episode of Good Kids, Jaime recalls an incident at their local Dairy Queen where she started to question her parenting. “I felt like all of my work had fallen on deaf ears and I wondered, would they become good people? Are they good people? Or are they just little sh*ts who have been given too much?” Through the human connection Jamie teaches her kids, and us, how to be kinder, gentler humans. How To Talk About Your Unique Family (with Peter Rider)
Stay-at-home dad Peter Rider shares his experience--the good, the bad, and the funny--with being detailed and clear when talking to his kids about all sorts of things. From having two gay dads to contracting head lice and more, he believes being explicit is the way to go. “One thing that I've been thinking about a lot over the past year, especially as my kids get a little older, is the balance between modeling behaviors vs. being really explicit and explaining things. I think I started out thinking that when it comes to values, kids really learn by seeing. But I think increasingly I've thought...about how you actually have to be really explicit about some things.” Be sure to check out our fantastic sponsors: BetterHelp offers affordable, private online counseling anytime, anywhere. From Bad to Worse: COVID’s Toll on a Top Child Care Center
bonusWe are excited to share another Lemonada Media show you will love. It's called No One Is Coming to Save Us and it tackles the American child care crisis. No One Is Coming to Save Us has new episodes out every Thursday. Gloria is back and ready to tackle America’s child care crisis head-on. To kick off season 2, she calls up Lauren Cook, CEO of Ellis Early Learning in Boston. We met Lauren back in season 1, where she walked us through the nitty gritty of how much it costs to operate a child care center. This time around, Lauren tears up as she talks about how nationwide labor shortages are reverberating through the child care system, what she has to do to keep the lights on at Ellis, and how the ongoing pandemic has made a bad situation continue to get worse. Listen to This: After 1954
bonusOur team wanted to share with you a preview of another Lemonada Media series that they know you’ll want to tune in for. The 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education paved the way for racial integration in public schools. But there's an unspoken consequence of this historic moment. Estimates show 38 thousand Black teachers were fired throughout the integration. This means, the number of Black educators in our public schools dramatically decreased during this time. And that number has never gone back up. This has left a huge void in our public schools. That’s why it’s so important we uplift Black leaders working in education today. After 1954, a new podcast from Lemonada Media hosted by Aimée Eubanks Davis, is out now wherever you get your podcasts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Let's Talk About Racism
Tabitha St. Bernard-Jacobs, activist, organizer, and artist, talks about how to raise anti-racist children, both in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and long-term, when police brutality and racial injustice have left the news cycle. She provides actionable steps for parents who don’t know where to start, including educating yourself, asking critical questions, and showing up for other communities. Plus, why Tabitha believes there’s no right or wrong time to talk with kids about racism. “If you're wondering when is the right time to talk to your kids about race, I think the first step is to unpack the white privilege that exists in your home and in your family.” You can follow Tabitha St. Bernard-Jacobs on Twitter and Instagram @tabithastb. How to Raise Joyful Kids
Dr. Janice Johnson Dias, sociologist, philanthropist, and mother of activist Marley Dias, talks about how to raise joyful, change-making kids. For her, it’s all about creating the conditions of joyfulness, which begins with listening to your child, asking them questions, and sharing what’s happening in your own life. Plus, why family and culture are so critical to creating joy, and how you can find your own joy as a parent. “Those of us who have found access to joy are those of us who are in the business of change-making, because every day we are doing something to improve the conditions under which we live and improve in the society in which we exist." Gaslight Daniel Tiger
Podcast host Jody Avirgan’s daughter has learned a lot from the hit kids’ TV show Daniel Tiger: how to say thank you, how to deal with anger, and even how to use the potty. The show’s songs have been so effective for her that Jody’s started implementing them into his parenting strategy. “I found myself doing what I've come to call the Gaslight Daniel Tiger technique, which is trying to convince my daughter that there are Daniel Tiger songs about very specific things that I want her to do or situations that we've encountered.” The catch is, that means Jody has to come up with his own Daniel Tiger-style songs on the spot. The Secret to Healthy Child Development (with Gabor Maté)
Dr. Gabor Maté, physician and child development expert, takes a deep dive into healthy child development: what conditions are necessary for it, which of those factors are missing from our society, and what parents can do to compensate for it. To unlock the key to healthy child development, he says we need to look towards our ancestors. “Human beings evolved originally in small-band hunter-gatherer groups… children were parented by multiple nurturing adults… and children were held all the time. They had multiple playmates of different ages to play with. And so they grew up confident in themselves and connected to the group.” Plus, why Gabor believes too much influence from peers and the Internet is a developmental disaster for young kids. I Struggle Every Day With Being a Good Mom
Fitness trainer Jillian Michaels shares her number one principle when it comes to parenting: always lead by example. She tries to set a good example for her kids in every aspect of life, not just with fitness and nutrition, but with the hard stuff, too – like owning up to your mistakes or knowing when to say sorry. “I find that if I want my kids to be polite, say please and thank you, look people in the eye when they greet them, I have to do the exact same.” Plus, hear about one of Jillian's "colossal" parenting mistakes, and how she recovered with grace. It Didn't Go Away (Part 2)
After a kidney doctor told her to simply “lose weight” to resolve an ongoing, undiagnosed medical issue, comedian and writer Jen Curran decided it was time to get a second opinion. A kidney biopsy, a bone marrow biopsy, and countless phone calls later, Jen finally had her answer. “My brain immediately started going to the videos I'm going to have to make for [my daughter] to watch when she's 16 and 30 and graduates high school. I'm going to have to sit down and write so many letters for her to open on different birthdays. I'm just imagining that I'm not going to live much longer.” Jen talks about what it was like in her first year after diagnosis, raising a newborn baby and going through treatment at the same time. Lose Some Weight, and It Will Go Away (Part 1)
Comedian Jen Curran tells the story of how her seemingly normal pregnancy turned into a “really scary situation” overnight. After doctors detected abnormally high levels of protein in her urine and her baby started measuring small, Jen was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a not-too-uncommon condition that’s supposed to “magically” go away after birth. But after her daughter Rose was born, and the high levels of protein were still there, it soon became clear that there was something much more serious going on.
Helping Women of Color Shatter the Glass Ceiling
In honor of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris becoming the highest-ranking woman ever elected in U.S. history, we talk with music industry matriarch Sophia Chang about how we can help women of color ascend in every industry: from music, film, and television to technology, medicine, law, and of course, politics. Sophia talks about the importance of mentorship, and why she created Unlock Her Potential, a free mentorship program for women of color in the United States. “You should have women of color in the room, not because it's the right thing to do, which it is. Anxiety Is a Roller Coaster in Your Mind
Dr. Shefali Tsabary, clinical psychologist, author, and world-renowned parenting expert outlines the many ways anxiety manifests itself in our lives – from perfectionism to overeating and even watching too many shows on Netflix. With one in five children being diagnosed with anxiety even before the pandemic, Dr. Shefali says it’s about time we revolutionize the way anxiety is viewed: as a superpower rather than a setback. That’s why she wrote her new book Superpowered: Transform Anxiety Into Courage, Confidence, and Resilience. Plus, Dr. Shefali’s top tips for managing your children’s anxiety – and your own – during the pandemic: “Stop having high expectations of your kids. You're not going to do it perfectly. You're going to put on weight. You're going to eat terribly. You're going to forget to exercise. This is normal. And this is not the time to put extra pressure on yourself.” You can follow Dr. Shefali on Instagram @doctorshefali, on Twitter @DrShefali, or on Facebook at @DrShefaliTsabary. Nic Stone, best-selling young adult author, says she never saw characters like herself in books growing up. That’s why she’s on a mission to make sure every child feels represented by the books on their bookshelf. Her latest book, Dear Justyce, tells the story of a Black boy who ends up in juvenile detention after confessing to the murder of a police officer. Plus, Nic shares her #1 piece of parenting advice. “I think that the best thing that we can do for our children is to create in them a desire for awareness,” she says. “And I'm not just talking about awareness of the world and how the world functions, but also an awareness of themselves, an awareness of their emotions, an awareness of other human beings and their emotions.” You can follow Nic Stone on Instagram @nicstone or on Twitter @getnicced. The Future Won't Get Better Until We Make It That Way
Climate activist and founder of Plus 1 Vote, Saad Amer, talks about his leap from nature lover to climate activist at just 14 years old. Frustrated with the lack of meaningful climate action from lawmakers, Saad came up with a simple solution: “Let’s get rid of them.” That’s why Saad is encouraging you (yes, you) and all your friends -- "your smart friends, your woke friends, your highly educated friends," as he says -- to get out there this November and VOTE! “A democracy will only represent the people who are voting,” he says. “And so if young people aren't voting for a series of reasons, then of course the democracy is not going to represent the needs and the values of young people.” You can follow Saad Amer on Instagram and Twitter @itsSaadAmer and on Facebook @saadamer. I Gave Birth During the Pandemic
Rachel Bloom, the Golden Globe-winning co-creator/star of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, reveals what it was like giving birth during the pandemic at the same moment her friend and music collaborator, Adam Schlesinger, was losing his battle with the virus. With COVID-19 as a humbling denominator, she confronts mortality with the same out-of-body clarity in a way that she hasn’t since that one time she took way too many mushrooms in Amsterdam. “There's nothing more on the nose about as one person enters, one person is leaving,” she reflects. “Ten minutes after he died, I was breastfeeding because she needed food. So there's something very egoless about, like, I can only grieve for so long.” You can follow Rachel Bloom on Instagram and Twitter @Racheldoesstuff. Support the show by checking out our sponsors! How To Unlock Grit in an Unpredictable World (with Angela Duckworth)
If you’ve ever sat through professional development as an educator, you’ve heard of Angela Duckworth. Both her research and personal experience in the classroom suggests that IQ isn’t always helpful in determining successful outcomes for students. Rather, a more important predictor of success is “grit,” a growth mindset, and feeling like you have a purpose that’s bigger than yourself. So how do we unlock grit and resilience in our kids, especially when the world is so uncertain and unpredictable? And what kind of impact will this period in our history have on our kids in the longterm? “Both the very recent events of the last few weeks and the still recent events of the last few months in the pandemic are all exactly what I study...this is historic.” Want to hear more from Angela Duckworth? You can follow her on Twitter at @angeladuckw and @TheCharacterLab Read Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance to learn why some people succeed and others fail.
How To Make Peace with TV (with Rebecca Carroll)
Rebecca Carroll is a cultural critic, host of WYNC’s Come Through podcast, and critic at large for the Los Angeles Times. TL;DR: She is qualified to talk about television. But during quarantine, she’s found herself reexamining the role TV plays in her own family and how it’s actually a pretty good thing when times are particularly tough. “I just don't think that this whole screen time thing is as negative as a lot of folks do. So long as I can have a conversation with my kid about what he is consuming, so long as I can have a conversation with him about what he is thinking, I am pretty lax about screentime.” Follow Rebecca Carroll on Instagram at @rebeljunemarie and on Twitter at @rebel19 Be sure to check out this episode’s fantastic sponsors: Looking for ways to take care of your emotional health, cope with the challenges we all are facing, and more? Practical tips abound in this phenomenal episode for kids and parents alike! How To Find Your Happy Place When Things Feel Sad (with JoAnna García Swisher)
JoAnna García Swisher (Sweet Magnolias) is a mother, actor, and founder of The Happy Place, a website dedicated to design and self-care. Her philosophy of “creating and celebrating the spaces, places, and moments that bring the greatest joy” has actually helped her navigate the difficult moments of her life, most recently the loss of her father, with whom she was incredibly close. This profound loss was a primer for the world we’re living in today, as we all learn to cope with feeling utterly out of control, providing as stable an environment as we can for our children, and trying our best to have faith that there will be a new story to write on the other side.
