<p>Growing from a few&nbsp;North German&nbsp;towns in the late 12th century, the Hanseatic League — a&nbsp;powerful network of merchant&nbsp;guilds&nbsp;and&nbsp;market towns&nbsp;— dominated trade across almost 200 settlements in seven modern-day countries.
