If You're Not Practicing Golf with Feedback...DON'T Practice! with Erik Schjolberg

The Fluid Motion Golf Factor and Reading Your Fluid Cues with Steven Yellin
789: Steven Yellin, creator, author, and teacher of the Fluid Motion Factor, listed a testimonial on his website from David Leadbetter that sums it up, “It’s pretty simple. The Fluid Motion Factor Program will make you more consistent. End of story!” If you believe that your mental game contributes to lower scores, then this episode is for you. Steven’s revolutionary training program allows you to be more consistent. But this isn’t sports psychology, this is a neurophysiological process in the mind that EVERY golfer has to experience in order to produce a fluid golf swing. He’ll work with you one on one, but be prepared because in our conversation, he says you can’t afford it. But he was generous enough to offer Golf Smarter listeners a 10% discount on his online program. Something that’s he’s never done before. Find more at fluidmotiongolf.com. Special thanks to Tony Wright (ep787) for introducing us to Steven! This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans 105, even though Tony Manzoni had tremendous success coaching the Men’s golf program at College of the Desert, he didn’t focus on Men’s golf only. He also spent a lot of time working with children who were exceptional golfers and had a future in the professional game.Tony’s book “The Lost Fundamental: One Simple Move. The 4 Primary Skills for Putting from The Putter Book with author Brandon Stooksbury PGA
786: Brandon Stooksbury’s first book The Wedge Book is an Amazon Best Seller. His newest, the Putter Book is simple, direct, and really helpful. This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans is the 5th of nine episodes with Tony Manzoni (RIP). Beyond being a great golfer and teacher, Tony Manzoni had so much more to his life than the game. Barney Adams on the State of the Game, Equipment, The Wow Factor, and Breakthrough Golf Tech
784: When Barney Adams introduced the Adams Golf Tight Lies Fairway “Woods” (was the first to use metal instead of wood) in 1988 he changed the golf equipment industry forever. The last time we spoke to him in 2012 he was promoting the wonderful idea of “Play It Forward” for the USGA. A great idea that never really caught on. Now he’s showcasing his newest venture at Breakthrough Golf Technology after seeing that no significant innovation has been made to putter shafts for decades. But there’s so much more we cover in this very entertaining hour including the state of the game, golf on tv, his WOW Factor book and more. This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans #100, is the third of nine episodes featuring the late, great instructor Tony Manzoni. This time in the first of two episodes, we talk about Getting To The Next Level, One Club at a Time. Your Wedges Were Designed for Pros, Not You! with Terry "The Wedge Guy" Koehler
783: Wedges are critically important to get the ball close to the flagstick. The Wedge Guy, Terry Koehler returns as this week's featured guest. If you’ve heard him on Golf Smarter over the years, or read his blogs, you know he’s frustrated with major club manufacturers who have not made any significant changes to wedges, other than those mandated by the USGA, in decades, even though drivers, hybrids, irons, and putters have all gone through game changing updates. His company, Edison Golf is proof that Terry walks the talk. In this episode, as always, Terry is opinionated, outspoken, and entertaining. This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans, published each Friday, is the second of nine episodes featuring the late, great instructor Tony Manzoni. In this conversation, Tony goes beyond swing mechanics and talks about “Your Intent” and how it needs to be aligned with your performance, and visa versa. The Science of Rethinking, Relearning, & Revamping Your Golf Swing with James Ragonnet, PhD
782: James Ragonnet, PhD, has a compelling new book called Your Inner Golf Guru: Developing the Golf Instructor Within, which contends that to improve your golf swing you need to take a systemic vs analytical approach. The Systemic method means that the golf swing is a sum of all its parts that need to work in cooperation. Breaking down those parts, the Analytical approach, is taking all the nuanced elements, similar to getting one tip from YouTube, another from a magazine, then adding something else from a buddy, is counter productive and could do more harm than good. James originally joined us in 2007 to discuss his book “Golf’s Three Noble Truths”. That episode can be heard on Golf Smarter Mulligans, episode 30. Both of these books are available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Your-Inner-Golf-Guru-Rethinking/dp/1683583981/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1WGX91EX03BMQ&dchild=1&keywords=james+ragonnet&qid=1614728602&sprefix=James+Rag%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-1 and https://www.amazon.com/Golfs-Three-Noble-Truths-Playing-ebook/dp/B0042FZW6G/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1WGX91EX03BMQ&dchild=1&keywords=james+ragonnet&qid=1614728619&sprefix=James+Rag%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-2By overwhelming demand, the next 9 episodes of Golf Smarter Mulligans feature some of our many conversations with the late Tony Manzoni. Tony was an amazing golf instructor who passed away in 2018. We first met him in 2009, and in the dozen or so times he was on the podcast with us, emails flooded in with more positive feedback than any other teacher featured. Tony’s book, The Lost Fundamental, One Simple Move, Better Golf Forever, which was out of print when he passed away, is once again available on Amazon including Kindle format https://www.amazon.com/Lost-Fundamental-Simple-Better-Forever-ebook/dp/B07MZFSPBW/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Tony+Manzoni&qid=1614728823&sr=8-1 . Tony’s video of the same name was also out of circulation, but can now be seen online. If you’d like to gain access please write to me directly via email [email protected]. Lastly, after he passed, we created a Tony Manzoni Memorial Golf Smarter Fund to benefit the First Tee of Coachella Valley. Your tax deductible contributions are greatly appreciated. But let’s take a moment of silence for Tiger’s full and speedy recovery. Tiger was in his prime at showed once again to the world his strength, power, and skills. To Draw or To Fade: That Is The Question…Or Is It?
780: PGA Master Professional Joe Hallett returns to Golf Smarter because he wants to help all of us be better golfers. Being a PGA Master Professional means that he’s one of only 200 PGA Members that are the teachers for PGA Certified Professional Instructors. He also has joined forces with the PerfectMotion app we’ve been talking about to provide you with instruction through the app. Joe usually charges $150/month to work with you through the app, but mention “golfsmarter” when you request having Joe provide instruction and you’ll get the “Even Par” special of only $72 for a month of remote coaching, or only $225hr when you visit Joe in person at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Academy in Franklin, TN. Joe’s website is https://www.joehallettgolf.com/ Learn more about PerfectMotion app for iOS or Android at https://perfectmotion.io/ This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 96 we open our scrap book to 2009, when the Presidents Cup was held at Harding Park in San Francisco. The next day, Golf Smarter listeners drove North across the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County (home of host Fred Greene) to play 18 holes at Peacock Gap Golf Course. After our round, we gathered for dinner and a live conversation between listeners and our special guest, Jesse Ortiz of Bobby Jones Golf. This was just around the same time the USGA made their ruling on wedge grooves that was the first step to controversial bifurcation (different rules for the Tour Pros and amateurs). Next week, tune in to hear Fred’s recordings from the sounds of play at that President’s Cup event in San Francisco. This episode was #200 of Golf Smarter from October 2009. We don’t replay every Golf Smarter episode for Golf Smarter Mulligans because, in this case, the previous two episodes were discussing technology and websites that are no longer relevant or available. If you have a question about whether or not Fred is using any of the methods, equipment or apps we’ve discussed, or if you’d like to share a comment about what you’ve heard in this or any other episode, please write because Fred will get back to you. If You Could Get 10 More Yards with Your Driver, What’s the Impact on the Rest of Your Clubs?
779: Roger Gunn, PGA returns to Golf Smarter to respond to host Fred Greene’s concern that increased yardage is a double edged sword. Of course we all want to hit the ball consistently, but we often speak of how much better we’d be if we could only hit it farther off the tee. There’s a lot more to gaining distance than a new club. It’s club head speed, flexibility, body type, proper mechanics, and fitted clubs. Let’s say you’ve achieved that distance, now you have to make adjustments with every club in your bag. Not so simple, right? If flexibility is an issue for you, then don’t miss this week’s Golf Smarter Mulligans (read on)! This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 95, Katherine Roberts, a longtime friend of GOLF SMARTER discusses her book "Swing Flaws and Fitness Fixes" where she provides tips, drills and advice on how to improve flexibility, strength and stamina. Do you realize how important your breathing is to your success on the course? We talk a lot about breathing and how it can impact your focus and power, plus she provides a stretching exercise to use during your round to remove tension and keep you loose. If you have a question about whether or not Fred is using any of the methods, equipment or apps we’ve discussed, or if you’d like to share a comment about what you’ve heard in this or any other episode, please write because Fred will get back to you. 2020 Was a Nightmare - But Not For Golf!! What About 2021? Let's Ask MattyB
778: For the last decade, we kicked off the new year with a sarcastic and silly look at the previous year’s PGA Tour season with comedian/TV personality/golf junkie Matty Blake presenting his annual “MattyB Awards”. But because the passed year was so….unique?…MattyB and host Fred Greene just discuss what was great, what was weird, what was funny, and what we hope finds a way to be a regular part of life in 2021 and beyond for professional and amateur golfers around the world. This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 94, host Fred Greene sits down with Michael Murphy, author of “Golf In The Kingdom”, the most popular golf novel in history. Your Eyes May be the Secret Weapon That Puts You in the Winner's Circle featuring Dr. Ryan Caserta
777: When it comes to golf improvement, all too often we discuss and dissect various parts of our swings, our bodies, our mental state, our equipment, etc. Our guest today is Dr Ryan Caserta who has studied eye movement patterns as a way to improve all aspects of golf. For the past two decades, Ryan has analyzed key aspects of expert performance and how to maintain those levels. Working with amateur and professional golfers at every level has provided him insights on eye movement patterns rarely seen or understood. His perceptual-cognitive training has helped professional golfers win Majors, finish #1 on the money list, and helped a Golf Smarter listener and former guest (episode #495 Juan Gutierrez) to win the World Golf Hall of Fame Putting Championship. This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 93, we hear part 2 of our conversation with one of the world’s expert on golf swing tempo, John Novasel. Previously this was an exclusive Members Only episode and these insights have never been heard publicly before. While many golf instructors pound into each student the importance of position, grip, and alignment, they don't talk much about tempo. The importance of tempo is a secret that every great player understands. Ernie Els' beautiful and effortless swing succeeds because of his consistent and calculated tempo. Golf Goal for 2021: BORING Golf! with Jamie Zimron, Our Golf Sensei
775: Jamie Zimron, our golf sensei, returns to explain why she loves to play boring golf and what we can do to get there. What’s boring golf? Fairway. Green. Fairway. Green. etc. When we play stress-less, we prosper more. That’s achieved through self-management where you’re trying to minimize damage during a round. Most amateurs are poor at it, but it’s not hard to achieve once you understand that bad decisions lead to negative self-talk. How do you get there? Listen for details. Four Time PGA Winner Chip Beck Shares Lessons from Life on Tour in 80s & 90s
771: Chip Beck was only the second player in PGA Tour history ever to card a 59 in a sanctioned PGA event. He’s also only one of two that posted that score in the 90s (1991 Las Vegas Invitational) along with David Duval who did it at the 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. The very first 59 was in 1977 by Al Geiberger, all the rest have come since 2000. Jim Furyk posted a 59 in 2013, yet he also has the all time low Tour event score of 58 posted in the 2016 Travelers Championship. Chip is also a four time winner on the Tour. But today he’s a golf coach and wants to help you get better. In the first of two episodes featuring Chip, we talk about how he got started playing at the age of 10 and shares incredible stories from his time on the Tour between 1978-2015 that include Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Raymond Floyd, Lanny Wadkins, and more. Let’s Shatter Some Myths and Misunderstandings About Single Length Golf Clubs
769: Bryson DeChambeau’s recent success on the PGA Tour has made single length golf clubs relevant. But are they for everyone? This week’s guest on Golf Smarter is Matt Lake of 1IronGolf.com. Matt claims that the major manufacturers focus on different length shafts for each club for the purposes of mass production and scalability of their business. 1IronGolf refuses to mass produce as an independent club maker who custom fits every set to every customer. The goal is for each user to have the exact same swing for every club, which could improve consistency, distance, and accuracy. We were first introduced to 1IronGolf.com by Matt’s Dad, David in 2009 (episode 76 of Golf Smarter Mulligans). Golf Smarter listeners get 10% any order at 1irongolf.com with checkout code “golfsmarter”. Plus they offer a 30-day 100% money-back guarantee (excluding Used/Demo sets). This week on the Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 85, we finish our conversation with Jess Ortiz, the legendary club designer for Bobby Jones Golf and Orlimar. You may remember Orlimar as the birthplace of fairway metal clubs. In this episode, that is being made public for the first time (previously For Members Only), Jesse answers listener’s 2009 questions, which ironically also cover this club designer’s opinions on single length golf clubs. If you have a question about whether or not Fred is using any of the methods, equipment or apps we’ve discussed, or if you’d like to share a comment about what you’ve heard in this or any other episode, please write because Fred will get back to you.
