日本清酒被視為日本最具代表性的酒類之一，在海外極受歡迎，而美國是日本清酒海外銷量第一大市場，不過隨著關稅壓境以及日本米荒，導致成本大幅提高，日本清酒外銷美國也受到衝擊。但在這樣的窘境下，日本清酒製造商也發現轉機，包括獺祭在內的清酒釀造廠，已開始採用美國產的米和其他原物料，來進行釀造，期盼在關稅後時代的美國，發展一片天。
