日本邁入高齡化社會，過去也曾發生多起高齡駕駛的車禍意外，因此日本鼓勵年長者自主繳回駕照，並且規定70歲以上民眾，更新駕照時須接受講習和測驗。專家表示，這樣的制度已經產生一定的效果，但專家認為，年長者健康狀況變化比較快，每3年更新一次駕照的期限應該再縮短。
