英國去年與非洲國家模里西斯達成初步協議，要將查哥斯群島主權交還給模里西斯。雖然有些人贊成島嶼回歸，認為這可抹去英國殖民的陰影，不過也讓反對人士憂心，與模里西斯關係良好的中國，會藉此機會在查哥斯群島，做出軍事部署。因為查哥斯群島中的最大島嶼，就是英美聯合軍事基地所在地，一直極具重要戰略地位。
