南加州的沿岸在近幾周以來，爆發嚴重的有毒「藻華現象」，藻華產生的神經毒素，讓各種海洋生物中毒，其中受害最深的就是海豚。專家表示，由於海溫升高，讓海中微生物大量繁殖，造成藻華現象，而人類如果食用遭到汙染的海鮮，也會有中毒的危險。
