當天主教教宗方濟各離世後，誰將繼任教宗一職，隨即成為全球關注的焦點。依照傳統，當教宗辭職或去世後，梵蒂岡的西斯汀教堂將舉行秘密選舉會議，由樞機主教們透過多輪投票，選出下一任教宗。目前，全球共有253位樞機主教，其中僅有138人符合參與選舉的年齡資格——因為根據規定，參選人必須年滿80歲以下，才有資格參與教宗選舉。
