美國國防部長赫格塞斯，近日出訪巴拿馬，兩國簽署了合作備忘錄，美國確定能夠優先和免費通行巴拿馬運河。而後赫格塞斯周末接受媒體訪問時，不忘抨擊中國，並強調運河營運絕不會再受到中國勢力影響。根據香港媒體的報導，巴拿馬運河2座港口，將由美商貝萊德集團掌控。
