美國總統川普，1日正式簽署行政命令，宣布將從4日開始，對加拿大、墨西哥，開徵25%的進口關稅，並對中國額外加徵10%關稅，這也同時引起，這些國家的強烈反彈，墨西哥總統立即下令對美國商品徵收報復性關稅，加拿大總理也宣布，將對價值1550億美元的美國商品徵收25%關稅。中國駐美使館發言人也回應，堅決反對新關稅。
