Show Notes
Scotland initiates a two-year pilot program to screen newborns for spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disorder causing muscle weakness. The heel prick blood spot test, usually done around four days after birth, will be used. Glasgows screening lab will handle the checks for three to four affected babies annually. The goal is early detection to prevent symptoms and complications. The program, funded by the Scottish Government and Novartis, aims to provide life-changing care and improve quality of life for affected babies and families.
