Ep 259Ultimate Guide to RV Lithium Batteries

RV enthusiasts, welcome back to the Girl Camper podcast! I’m Lesa McDermott, your co-host, and today we’re diving into the world of RV power systems, specifically focusing on lithium batteries. Joining us is Eva Mitic from Go Power Solar, who shares her extensive knowledge about lithium batteries in RVs. **Understanding the Battery Types** In RVs, there are mainly three types of batteries: Lead Acid, AGM, and Lithium. Lead Acid is the oldest, requiring maintenance and being the heaviest. AGM offers slight improvements with no maintenance, but Lithium is the real game-changer. Lighter and more efficient, a single lithium battery can replace multiple lead acid batteries, providing more power and a longer lifespan. **Why Switch to Lithium?** Lithium batteries are compact and can have an impressive lifespan of 12 years, courtesy of their 3000 cycles. They charge faster than lead acid batteries and are far more efficient. Although the initial cost is higher, the long-term savings are substantial. Moreover, lithium batteries require minimal maintenance, and Eva assures us that storing them fully charged is ideal. **Installation Insights** If your RV was built before 2019, you might need to upgrade the battery charger to accommodate lithium batteries. Newer RVs should have lithium-compatible systems, making installation straightforward. Another perk of lithium is its safety; these batteries are sealed and can even be installed inside your RV, freeing up space and adding security. **Eco-friendly and Safe Choices** Lithium batteries not only enhance performance but also contribute to sustainability by reducing waste compared to traditional batteries. **Final Thoughts** Are you on the fence about switching to lithium? Consider your camping style and power needs. Whether you’re off-grid for a few days or a few weeks, lithium batteries enhance your experience. For RVers looking for reliability and efficiency, lithium is the way to go. For additional resources and guidance, visit Go Power’s website and explore their interactive tools for your RV. Thank you, Eva Mitic, for joining us and providing valuable insights. Stay connected with Girl Camper online and check out our upcoming events. Until next time, happy camping! Ep 253Solar Made Simple: RV Power Solutions With Go Power's Eva Mitic

On this episode of the Girl Camper Podcast, Lesa McDermott visits with Eva Mitic, the marketing manager from Go Power Solar. If you’ve been contemplating adding solar to your RV or have questions about what it can do, this podcast episode is your go-to resource. Eva breaks it down on what what equipment is needed and makes it easy to understand. **Advantages of Solar Power** Eva highlights the key benefits of solar power for RVs—it’s a renewable resource offering free, quiet energy from the sun. Unlike noisy generators, solar systems let you enjoy nature without distractions. They also extend battery lifespan, saving costs over time by reducing campsite hookup fees and eliminating the need for gasoline. **Choosing the Right Solar Setup** Determining the right solar setup depends on your RV’s roof space and power needs. For small power requirements like charging phones, minimal solar panels suffice. However, more significant systems are necessary for appliances like residential refrigerators. Interestingly, advancements in lithium batteries are making it more feasible to power air conditioners using solar energy. **Tips for First-Time Solar Buyers** Eva advises starting small and expanding as needs grow. It’s crucial to use appropriate wiring to optimize energy transfer. For portable solar kits, securing them is important to prevent theft. When considering investment, users should weigh nightly campground fees versus long-term savings and freedom. **Maintenance and Lifespan** Regular maintenance includes cleaning panels and checking connections. A typical solar panel lasts over 25 years, while charge controllers last around five years. Battery lifespans vary, with lithium batteries offering the longest duration. **Conclusion** Eva wraps up with practical advice for winterizing your RV solar system and emphasizes the importance of investing in quality solar components. This  episode reinforces solar energy’s role in enhancing RV experiences, providing freedom and sustainability. For additional resources and guidance, visit Go Power’s website and explore their interactive tools for sizing the perfect solar system for your RV.  Watch for a future episode on lithium batteries with Lesa & Eva and more tech advancements on the Girl Camper podcast! As the holiday season approaches, many of us find ourselves preparing to host gatherings or visit friends and family as their guest. But what does it take to be a gracious host or a considerate guest? Whether you’re opening your home or traveling to someone else’s, these tips will help make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved. **Tips for Being a Great Host** 1. **Preparation is Key**: Ensure your home is guest-ready by providing essentials like bathrobes, towels, snacks, and toiletries. Pre-making meals such as soups or casseroles can alleviate stress and allow more time to spend with your guests. 2. **Hospitality and Communication**: Greet your guests warmly, show them around, and let them know they’re welcome. Sharing meal plans or scheduled activities can help guests understand expectations and plan their time accordingly. 3. **Flexibility and Engagement**: Provide options for activities and entertainment that cater to different preferences, such as hiking, local attractions, or game nights. Encourage open communication about dietary restrictions or special needs. **Being the Perfect Guest** 1. **Mindful Requests**: While it’s okay to mention dietary needs, avoid making extensive or pricey requests that could burden your host. 2. **Offer to Help**: Whether it’s setting the table, cleaning up, or buying groceries, volunteering for simple tasks makes a big difference. 3. **Respect and Gratitude**: Respect your host’s schedule and house rules. Show appreciation with a thoughtful gift or a handwritten thank-you note after your visit. **Shared Joy in Hosting and Visiting** Ultimately, creating a welcoming atmosphere or being a considerate guest is about making others feel valued and comfortable. As Bonnie Shafto emphasizes, “Be prepared and flexible, engage in great conversations, and most importantly, be joyful.” The festive season can come with its challenges, but a little planning and goodwill can transform any visit into a cherished memory. Ep 249Year One of Seasonal Camping: Hits, Misses & the Road Ahead

Exploring the Journey of Seasonal Camping with Janine Pettit on the Girl Camper Podcast Ever wondered what it’s like to set up a home-away-from-home at a campground for an entire season? Janine Pettit, co-host of the Girl Camper podcast, dives into her first season as a seasonal camper. She unpacks the highs, the lows, and all the lessons in between. Janine’s journey wasn’t just about setting a camper down and calling it home. It was about embracing a new lifestyle and creating a base where friends, family, and fellow campers could gather. In this episode, she reflects on why she chose seasonal camping, her experiences, and how it impacted her day-to-day life. Here’s a peek into Janine’s thoughts and advice for anyone thinking about seasonal camping. Why Choose Seasonal Camping? Seasonal camping isn’t just about saving on travel costs or avoiding the hassle of setting up and tearing down. For Janine, it was the allure of a steady retreat that sparked her interest. She explains how her decision was shaped by the convenience of always having a space waiting for her. A spot perfect for spontaneous getaways and family get-togethers, without the logistics of constant planning. The Convenience of a Seasonal Site With a dedicated campsite, Janine enjoys a ready-to-go setup, where all her camping essentials are already in place. No more packing, repacking, or frequent RV maintenance, she notes. The stability offered by a seasonal campsite made family gatherings easier and helped her think differently about her “camping home base.” Family Time and Unexpected Benefits Seasonal camping also became a great excuse for family time, creating opportunities to come together. Janine touches on the “homey” feel of having her own spot in nature and even weighs in on the real estate-like value of a seasonal site—getting “the best of both worlds” without a mortgage. Work and Maintenance Benefits For anyone who needs to work remotely, Janine mentions the surprising benefits of setting up a workstation at her campground. It allowed her to enjoy peace and productivity that her usual workspace couldn’t always provide. She even goes into practical details about truck maintenance and managing the unique needs of an RV in a seasonal setup. The Choice of Campground: Spacious Skies Country Oaks Janine chose the Spacious Skies Country Oaks Campground for her seasonal adventure, highlighting the amenities and the welcoming environment. With activities that range from cozy fire pits to community gatherings, she found herself soaking up the social side of camping and benefiting from a supportive, ready-made community. Weekday Serenity and Weekend Fun One of the highlights of seasonal camping, according to Janine, is the unique blend of serenity on weekdays and a vibrant, bustling campground on weekends. She enjoys the quiet time during the week and the lively atmosphere on weekends—an ideal balance that’s a bit of a hidden perk of seasonal camping. Challenges of Seasonal Camping No journey is without its drawbacks. Janine is candid about some of the challenges she faced, from scheduling conflicts to routine RV maintenance. And while she loves the flexibility of seasonal camping, she’s realistic about the occasional need for additional upkeep and time management. RV Selection Janine shares her joy in having her camper as a seasonal retreat. She discusses the process of choosing the right RV for a seasonal stay, weighing the benefits of different setups, and what worked best for her needs. Special Moments: Halloween Celebrations and More From holiday gatherings to themed events, Janine notes the special community spirit that’s unique to seasonal camping. Celebrating Halloween at the campground with her seasonal neighbors added a new experience, blending tradition with the novelty of the campground. Final Reflections and Advice As Janine wraps up her episode, she reflects on the unexpected joys and the challenges of her first year as a seasonal camper. She shares personal anecdotes and helpful tips for those considering making seasonal camping their own. Finally, for those pondering if it’s worth the commitment, Janine’s takeaway is simple: If you’re seeking a deeper connection to nature, community, and maybe even to yourself, seasonal camping might just be the answer. For all aspiring seasonal campers out there, Janine’s journey is filled with lessons and a genuine appreciation for this unique lifestyle. Whether you’re dreaming of setting up a seasonal spot of your own or simply curious about what it’s like, this episode is packed with valuable advice. Ep 248Effortless Campfires:  The Ingenious Pull Start Fire

Hi everyone, Janine Pettit here from the Girl Camper podcast! Recently, I was thrilled to have an inspiring conversation with David Arias, co-founder of Pull Start Fire. It’s a game-changing product that every outdoor enthusiast should know about because it makes lighting a campfire effortless. **The Inspiration Behind Pull Start Fire** Pull Start Fire was born from pure necessity. Mechanical engineering student Mike Beyrodt invented the product after a frigid camping trip left him without a fire. His innovative solution? A portable fire starter that, with just a tug, conjures a robust flame – even in challenging conditions. This is not only ingenious but a potential lifesaver, as it has already rescued a stranded elk hunter. **A Game Changer for Campers** This isn’t just any fire starter. Pull Start Fire ignites your campfire in five seconds, sparing novices and experts alike the hassle of traditional fire-starting methods. Having personally experienced countless campfires, I can vouch for its reliability. Whether confronting damp wood or simply wanting instant gratification, this little magic box is a must-have. **Expanding Access and New Innovations** Pull Start Fire is more accessible than ever, available at a variety of retailers such as Walmart, Amazon, and local camp stores. Additionally, the Pull Start team is working on a new portable grill that promises hassle-free, flavorful outdoor cooking. Expected next year, this grill lights up in seconds and maintains a steady heat for hours. **Entrepreneurial Spirit** This story isn’t just about a product; it’s about the perseverance of entrepreneurship. Mike Beyrodt’s journey is a testament to innovation and determination in today’s competitive market. The team’s efforts have cleared regulatory hurdles and ensured each Pull Start Fire is dependable, with a remarkable success rate of just one failure every 600 pieces. **Get the Exclusive Offer** To celebrate, they’re offering a 20% discount when you use the code GIRLCAMPER1024 at pullstartfire.com. Ep 245Crappy Camper 4: Navigating Camping Manners at the Water Spigot and Campsite Boundarys

Hi there, fellow adventurers! In this episode of the Girl Camper Podcast, we delve into the challenges of camping etiquette that many of us face at campgrounds. Do you have good camping manners? Let’s unravel the frequent debates we have on our podcast ‘Are You a Crappy Camper?’ focusing on communal water spigots and campsite boundaries. **Water Spigot Woes** Campsites often provide communal water spigots, meant for collective use by campers. But what’s the appropriate use for these water sources? There are instances where campers wash dishes directly at the faucet, which can leave behind debris and create unnecessary puddles. Our recommendation? Grab a bucket of water, bring it back to your site, and do the cleaning there. Many of our listeners agree that maintaining a clean, respectful space is key to peaceful camping. **Setting Boundaries**  Another popular issue is when people cut through campsites. A smaller camper doesn’t give permission for others to take a shortcut through your rented area. Campsite owners suggest tactfully reminding wanderers of proper camping manners. Placing solar lights or temporary fences can subtly signify boundary limits. Remember, it’s about respecting others’ space, much like you would in a neighborhood. **The Unwritten Camping Code**  Whether you’re a seasoned camper or new, it’s integral to acknowledge campground etiquette. Whether deciding the best way to handle a disruptive camper or teaching newcomers about the community spigot, these unwritten rules help maintain harmony in the camping community. **Join the Conversation**  Have you faced similar situations? Share your stories and tips in our Girl Camper community and help spread the joy of hassle-free camping! We love connecting with you and hearing your solutions to these common camping dilemmas. **Stay Tuned**  As we invite you to share your thoughts, stay tuned for more fun discussions and practical tips in our next podcast episodes! Ep 241Careers as an RV Technician with Curtis Hemmeler of RVTI

Welcome to today’s Girl Camper podcast! We are excited to share our latest episode, featuring Curtis Hemmeler, the Executive Director of the RV Technical Institute (RVTI). With 74 million Americans planning to take an RV trip in the next year, the demand for skilled RV technicians is skyrocketing. Curtis joined Lesa McDermott to discuss why now is the perfect time to consider a career as an RV tech. Here’s a recap of their conversation. The RV Technical Institute: A Brief Overview The RV Technical Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the consumer experience by training, certifying, and recruiting RV technicians. Founded five years ago with a $10 million grant, RVTI has quickly established itself as the industry standard for technician training. Their comprehensive program ensures technicians are well-equipped to handle everything from electrical systems to plumbing and appliances. The Growing Demand for RV Technicians Curtis highlighted the increasing demand for RV technicians, driven by a combination of high RV sales and an aging technician population. To meet this demand, RVTI has developed a robust career path that includes four levels of certification, from inspection to master technician. Empowering Women in the RV Industry Part of the discussion focused on RVTI’s efforts to include and empower women in the RV industry. The RV Women’s Alliance (RVWA) has sponsored several women-only tech classes, which have been immensely successful. Curtis emphasized that women often excel in these programs due to their attention to detail and compassionate approach to service. Affordable and Accessible Training One of the standout points is the affordability of RVTI’s training. Level One and Two courses cost just $600 combined and can be completed in person or online. Scholarships are also available, making it even easier for aspiring technicians to get started. A Promising Career Path Whether you’re interested in becoming a mobile tech, working at a dealership, or even just picking up a valuable side hustle, a career as an RV technician offers flexibility, high demand, and significant earning potential. For those interested in learning more about RVTI’s programs or finding women-specific classes, visit the RVTI website or the RVWA website. Ep 240Crappy Camper 3: Don't Pee on That and Gas Station Etiquette

In this episode, we chat about the fun – and sometimes frustrating – experiences we all encounter at the campground. From unexpected incidents with kids to issues involving gas station etiquette, our stories cover it all. Campground Don’ts One story from a fellow Girl Camper, Ellen, sparks a lively debate. Ellen recounts a situation where a 13-year-old boy pees a little too close to her tent. The group’s reactions were divided, with over 700 comments flooding our Facebook page. The burning question: should Ellen have spoken directly to the boy or his mother about camp etiquette? We agreed this was a teaching moment. While some argued that boys will be boys and peeing outside is part of the adventure, we also emphasized respecting other campers’ spaces. Gas Station Woes Next, we tackled an explosive topic from another camper who encountered a common frustration: being blocked at a gas station by an unattended vehicle. With no driver in sight for 15 minutes, campers were split on who was in the wrong. We sided with the frustrated camper; blocking a pump without consideration for others is definitely bad camp etiquette. River Adventures On a lighter note, we shared our recent river trip adventures. Imagine whitewater rafting down the Green River in Utah. With first-time Girl Camper Dale experiencing the thrills (and chills) of outdoor life, it was an unforgettable trip filled with wildlife and memorable moments. Plans for next year’s river trip are underway. Join us next time, and remember: go places and do things! For more stories, tune into our podcast or subscribe to Girl Camper magazine. Ep 239Crossing The Impossible: The OG of Overlanding - Patty Upton

Welcome to another episode of the Girl Camper Podcast! I’m your host, Lesa McDermott, and today I had the pleasure of interviewing overlanding legend, Patty Upton. Known for her extraordinary journey across the daunting Darien Gap, Patty’s story is one of adventure, resilience, and unyielding spirit. Introduction Patty Upton, alongside her husband, Lauren, achieved what many deemed impossible. They successfully traversed the Darien Gap, a perilous and nearly impassable stretch in Central America. This remarkable feat earned them a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first to conquer this challenging territory by land. Overlanding is all about the journey and this was one heck of a journey. Patty’s Early Life and Journey Patty’s passion for exploration was ignited from the very beginning. Born into a military family, she was constantly on the move. Her adventures took her around the globe, but Panama, where she spent her high school and college years, became a significant chapter in her life. It was in Panama that she first encountered the insurmountable challenge of the Darien Gap. The Darien Gap Expedition In 1977, Lauren Upton embarked on his first expedition through the Darien Gap with a CJ 7 Jeep, marking the beginning of many trials and tribulations. After several attempts plagued by unforeseen dangers and mechanical failures, they finally succeeded in 1989 with the Sandship Discovery, a 1966 CJ5 Jeep. Patty’s recount of their 741-day overlanding journey through the 125-mile stretch is a testament to their determination and resourcefulness. Life Beyond the Gap Patty and Lauren’s journey didn’t stop at the Darien Gap. They continued their adventure, driving across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, completing their overland trip in Norway. Conclusion Patty’s story is a beacon of inspiration for all aspiring adventurers. Her message is clear: anyone can achieve their dreams with enough determination and grit. As Patty now seeks a permanent home for the Sandship Discovery in a museum, her incredible adventures serve as a reminder to us all that impossible is just an opinion. Stay tuned for more fascinating tales from Patty Upton in future podcast episodes. Until then, happy camping and always chase your next adventure! Interested in learning more about Patty? Ep 238Why You Should Attend The Hershy RV Show

Welcome everyone! I’m Lesa McDermott, co-host of the Girl Camper podcast. We’re thrilled to share insights on the much-anticipated Hershey RV Show, taking place next week. Joining us today is Heather Leach, the executive director of the Pennsylvania RV and Camping Association, who sponsors America’s largest RV show. Meet Heather Leach Heather’s role involves everything from advocacy and legislative work to organizing the Hershey RV Show. The show runs from September 11th to 15th (2024) and showcases the latest 2025 RV models—a first in the country. Heather shares that the Hershey RV Show has been a major event for 55 years. Initially a combo show with the Manufactured Housing Association, the RV show grew into a standalone event, becoming a manufacturer’s showcase rather than a dealer’s show. This flexibility allows attendees to easily navigate and find specific RVs. Why Attend? Not only can attendees explore an impressive lineup of over 1,500 RVs, but they can also buy and interact directly with manufacturers. This year’s show features several exciting giveaways, including a 2025 Flagstaff tent camper and other outdoor gear. Engaging Activities and Educational Opportunities The Hershey RV Show offers various educational seminars covering topics like selecting an RV, RV maintenance, and maximizing your RV experience. Heather emphasizes the importance of planning your visit by mapping out must-see exhibits and wearing comfortable shoes. The Evolving RV Industry and Women Heather notes significant shifts in the RV industry, particularly the growing influence of female consumers and women-led businesses. Organizations like the RV Women’s Alliance have made strides in technical training and support, further empowering women in the field. Plan Your Visit The show’s full schedule, including meet-and-greets with industry influencers like Janine Pettit and myself, is available on largestRVshow.com. This event is not just an RV showcase but a community experience offering valuable insights and a sense of community for newcomers and seasoned RV enthusiasts alike. Conclusion Thank you to Heather Leach for sharing these insights about the Hershey RV Show. If you’re in the area, don’t miss this incredible event. Welcome, adventurers! Today, Janine Pettit is thrilled to share an incredible story from our podcast, featuring Retha Charette, a.k.a. the Roaming Nanny. As a Girl Camping Ambassador, Editor in Chief of Girl Camper Magazine, and a proud mom of a thru-hiker of the Appalachian Trail, it’s Janine’s honor to dive deep into Retha’s exhilarating journey. **Meet Retha Charette** Retha, a lifelong outdoor enthusiast from Massachusetts, now resides in Southern Vermont. Her hiking escapades began in earnest in 2014 after a life-changing experience hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. Inspired by her Girl Scout days and a challenging pandemic year, Retha section-hiked the Long Trail in Vermont. That success fueled her ambition to tackle the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail. **The Journey of a Thru-Hiker** Retha started her hike on March 22nd with her supportive partner cheering her on. Despite the hardships, like a terrifying encounter with a tornado on Hike Naked Day, she pushed through with determination and grit. Her mantra, “Never quit on a bad day,” coupled with daily visualization of reaching Mount Katahdin, kept her focused and motivated. **Trail Magic and Community** The sense of community on the Appalachian Trail is unparalleled. From unexpected acts of kindness to meeting remarkable people like the blind hiker known as Double Zero, Retha’s journey was rich with heartfelt connections. These moments of “trail magic” reaffirmed the trail’s motto: the wilderness brings people together in extraordinary ways. **Physical and Mental Transformation** Completing the trail wasn’t just a physical feat for Retha; it was a profound emotional and spiritual journey. The real world seemed overwhelming upon returning, but the trail’s lessons in resilience and community support have left an indelible mark on her. **Advice for Aspiring Hikers** Retha emphasizes the importance of wilderness first aid training and finding a supportive network. Despite the danger associated with solo adventures, she believes the trail is safer than many places in the real world due to its inherent community spirit. **Join the Adventure!** Feeling inspired? Whether it’s a weekend hike or a long-distance trek, there’s no wrong way to embrace the outdoors. Ep 236Crappy Camper Episode 2: Noisy Dogs & Generators

Welcome to Another Episode of “Are You a Crappy Camper?” Hi everyone! I’m Janine Pettit, and with my co-host Lesa McDermott, we bring you another episode of the Girl Camper podcast. Today, we delve deep into two hot topics for campers: dogs and generators at campgrounds. **Dog Etiquette at the Campground** Having 400,000 members in our Facebook group means plenty of lively discussions, especially about pets. One notable comment from Andrea shared an experience at a KOA campground where a nearby camper’s five Pomeranians yapped non-stop. It’s a perfect reminder that while we love our pets, it’s essential to respect fellow campers. Lesa and Janine agree that managing your dog’s behavior is crucial. Whether you have one dog or multiple, a well-behaved dog makes everyone’s camping experience better. Camper Debra shared useful insights about teaching manners with a mix of five dogs and five cats. Training and awareness truly make a difference. **Managing Your Dogs While Camping:** – Keep barking to a minimum. – Be aware of your dog’s behavior and needs. – Respect campground rules about pets. **Generator Noise: A Persistent Problem** Generator noise can be a significant nuisance, as Tracy pointed out when she couldn’t escape the clamor next to her cozy van at a Minnesota campground. Respecting quiet hours, typically from 10 PM to 6 AM, is paramount, and modern camping has made strides with solar and lithium battery technologies to power essentials without the noise. **Generator Guidelines:** – Respect quiet hours. – Consider solar and lithium battery systems. – If you must use a generator, choose one with a decibel level of 55 or lower. With continuous advancements in camping technology, quieter and more efficient camping is increasingly achievable. Your choices and awareness can ensure you enjoy nature without disturbing others. **Wrapping Up** Thank you for joining us on this episode of “Are You a Crappy Camper?” Whether it’s about managing loud dogs or noisy generators, remember to be considerate to fellow campers. Follow Girl Camper across all social media platforms and check out our magazine for more tips and stories.  If you have a topic you’d like covered in our monthly Crappy Camper podcast, please let us know. Ep 235Camping Safety Tips with Lori Osmond of Damsel in Defense

Camping offers a serene escape from the hustle of daily life, but it’s crucial to prioritize safety. In a recent podcast episode of Girl Camper, Lori Osmond from Damsel in Defense shared invaluable tips on how to enhance your safety while camping, traveling, and boondocking. **Introduction** Lori Osmond, a former teacher and search and rescue expert, has spent over a decade empowering women to stay safe through Damsel in Defense. Her mission revolves around three pillars: protecting, preparing, and preventing. She’s proud to be with Damsel in Defense, who have rescued over 1,500 children from human trafficking, demonstrating the profound impact of their work. **Tips for Staying Safe** 1. **Safety Devices and Training**    Lori underscores the importance of carrying safety devices like stun guns, pepper sprays, and alarms. She offers training on how to use these tools effectively. For instance, a stun gun with a disable pin ensures that if an attacker takes it away, they can’t use it against you. 2. **Situational Awareness**    Lori stresses the need to be aware of your surroundings. Walking confidently and avoiding distractions like texting can deter potential attackers. 3. **Group Travel**    Camping in groups can significantly enhance your safety. It’s harder for attackers to target individuals when you’re in a crowd. 4. **Preparedness**    Devices like a “junk in the trunk” travel bundle, which includes essentials like a first aid kit and headlamp, can be lifesavers. Additionally, gadgets like the road trip flashlight, which includes an alarm and a seatbelt cutter, should be standard in all vehicles. **Practical Tips for Specific Situations** – **Campground Safety**: Lock your doors and windows, and keep your safety devices within reach. – **Travel Notifications**: Inform friends or family about your travel itinerary and expected return. – **Public Spaces**: Avoid being alone in secluded areas like stairwells and public bathrooms. **Conclusion** Staying safe while camping or traveling involves preparation and awareness. Lori Osmond’s insights are invaluable for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors without compromising their safety. For more tips and products, visit Damsel in Defense’s website. Ep 334Family, Fun & Entrepreneurship: Spacious Skies' Story

Meet Ali Rasmussen and Spacious Skies Campground Welcome, friends! Today, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Ali Rasmussen, the visionary founder of Spacious Skies Campground. Alongside her husband, Ali has transformed her love for the outdoors into a thriving empire of campgrounds that span across the country. Currently, they boast 15 locations, making it possible for families to reconnect with nature in a variety of beautiful settings. Unlikely Beginnings What makes Ali’s story so compelling is her transition from a background with zero experience in camping to owning a successful chain of campgrounds. Building the Spacious Skies Brand During these trips, Ali and her husband conducted what they now call “unintentional market research.” They quickly realized the impact that camping and nature had on their family dynamics and envisioned sharing this experience with others. By leveraging Eric’s real estate background and Ali’s creative marketing skills, they started Spacious Skies Campground, highlighting the importance of the connection to nature and creating inclusive camping experiences for everyone. Philosophy and Vision The name “Spacious Skies” was inspired by the patriotic poem “America the Beautiful,” symbolizing inclusivity and a shared love for the land. Their mission is to offer accessible and meaningful camping experiences that cater to all types of campers, from novices to seasoned adventurists. They emphasize staff creativity and guest comfort, ensuring a welcoming environment that feels like home. Melissa, an RV underwriter with over 27 years of experience, emphasizes the necessity for liability, comprehensive, and collision coverage specifically tailored for campers and motorhomes. Issues like Mr. Squirrel making a camper his home and how such situations can be covered under certain policies are covered . The podcast highlights how insurance can provide peace of mind, especially for solo travelers and full-time RVers. Specialty Coverages Melissa elaborates on niche coverages such as roof protection, which safeguards against elemental wear and tear, and pest protection, which covers damage caused by critters. Personal belongings coverage is another vital policy discussed, covering up to $99,000 for items inside the camper. They also touch on the importance of having adequate RV insurance for both travel trailers and tow vehicles, emphasizing roadside assistance in case of breakdowns. Vintage Camper, DIY Vans & Full Timers For those with vintage trailers or DIY camper vans, Lesa and Melissa discuss Progressive’s specialized policies to meet these unique needs. For full-time RV living, they cover essential features like liability in camp areas and protection for storage sheds. The discussion on RV insurance continues with Melissa outlining the different types of coverage: Total Loss Replacement, Agreed Value, and Actual Cash Value, and how these apply based on the camper’s age and use. Ep 232Are You A Crappy Camper? episode 1

Join Janine Pettit and Lesa McDermott in the debut episode of this monthly series of the Girl Camper Podcast as they tackle camping etiquette and discuss stories from their community about inconsiderate campers. They explore issues like campsite cleanliness, light pollution, and dog etiquette, while sharing tips on how to be a respectful camper. In this episode, one of the primary examples came from a listener named Dorian. She recounted a camping trip that was almost perfect except for some unfortunate campsite maintenance issues, which sparked a conversation among many Facebook member, generating 179 comments. Rainbow Marshmallow Mess Dorian described finding melted, ant-covered marshmallows scattered across the camping pad area upon arrival, making the setup work troublesome. The lesson here: leaving marshmallows (or any other debris) at a campsite is inconsiderate. Sidewalk Chalk Catastrophe Another issue Dorian faced was picnic tables and trees covered in sidewalk chalk. While sidewalk chalk may entertain kids, its use should be limited to actual sidewalks, not communal campground property. Fruity Pebbles in a Tree Stump In an odd and smelly discovery, Dorian found a tree stump filled with milk and Fruity Pebbles, attracting bees. Thorough campsite cleanup can prevent such unpleasant surprises for the next visitors. Practicing Proper Camping Etiquette The post by Dorian prompted a wealth of responses, varied from complaints about sunflower seed shells to endorsements of the “leave no trace” principle. The consensus was that campers should always clean up after themselves, ensuring a pleasant experience for all. Dog Poop Issues Another listener highlighted the recurring problem of dog owners failing to clean up after their pets. Disregarded dog waste is not only unsightly but inconsiderate to other campers. Responsible pet ownership is crucial in maintaining campsite cleanliness. Addressing Light Pollution The discussion then turned to the annoyance of excessively bright lights at campsites. One listener recounted her struggle with a neighbor’s glaring motion-sensor lights. While these lights provide security, minor adjustments can often enhance communal comfort. Practical Solutions Adjusting the sensitivity or angle of motion lights could reduce disturbances significantly. A polite conversation with the neighbor is recommended for resolving light pollution issues. If direct confrontation seems daunting, campground managers can often mediate effectively. Wrap Up The first episode of “Are You a Crappy Camper?” emphasized the importance of good camping etiquette and consideration for fellow campers. By practicing these simple principles, everyone can ensure a more enjoyable outdoor experience. Janine and Lesa look forward to bringing more engaging topics and stories in the next installment of the Girl Camper Podcast. Stay tuned and happy camping! They discuss essential tips and advice on finding the perfect mattress for your camper. Why RV Mattresses Matter During the conversation, Hailey highlights a common issue among RV owners: the stock RV mattress is often uncomfortable and poorly constructed. Unlike home mattresses, RV mattresses frequently come in unusual sizes and shapes. As a result, they don’t always provide the best comfort for sleepers. Hailey emphasizes that quality materials and long-lasting comfort are key to a good mattress. It’s important to have options tailored to different sleeping styles and positions. Customization Options Next, Hailey explains the customization options available at RVMattress.com. With over 22 sizes, five heights, and three firmness options, RV Mattress ensures there’s something for everyone. For instance, Janine shares her personal experience of taking the mattress quiz on their website, which led her to the Aurora Luxe, a cooling mattress perfect for hot sleepers like her. Mattress Construction and Durability Moreover, Hailey elaborates on the construction and durability of their mattresses. All products are designed and constructed in their Phoenix, Arizona facility, ensuring close quality control. The mattresses are made to order, using high-quality materials that withstand compression and roll packing. Additionally, RVMattress.com offers a 10-year warranty, reflecting their confidence in the longevity of their products. Accessories and Additional Products Besides mattresses, RVMattress.com offers various accessories such as sheets, pillows, and mattress protectors. Although these accessories are sourced from trusted wholesalers, they meet the high-quality standards set by the company. Hailey particularly recommends their weighted blanket for hot sleepers. Episode 180: Tim Heintz – Vintage Trailer Expert and Restorer

When I see a vintage camper I am transported back to the camp outs of my youth! They hold so much in the way of charm and nostalgia for me. We did some tent camping and had a home made pop up that we rented from a neighbor each year. When we would walk around the campground I would always want to look inside the little trailers. When I returned to camping in 2006 I bought a 1959 Field and Stream with the birchwood interior. I also joined the group Tin Can Tourists to learn as much as I could about vintage trailer ownership. Membership in that Facebook group was the first place I ever saw any questions raised about the damage that exists in many (most) vintage trailers. Of course that damage varies depending on how well they were cared for, what part of the country they were in and what manufacturing methods were used. Canned hams that were stick and tin built did not fare as well over time as the riveted aluminum trailers. One thing seemed certain though, any unit that was at least forty years old would have at least some issues that needed addressing. Enter Tim Heintz, founder of Heintz Designs Vintage Trailer Restorations. Tim has a love for and extensive knowledge of vintage trailers with a specialty in trailers manufactured from the 1930’s through 1960’s. He is one of the country’s leading restorers and does custom rebuilds for customers at his Panama City, Florida location. I invited Tim on the show to share his wisdom on vintage trailer restorations and help those enamored with these nostalgic beauties know when to buy and when to walk away and when to leave the revitalization to a pro. Tim has done many, many trailer restorations over the years and has a big personal collection of vintage trailers. One of my favorite restorations was this 1951 Vagabond. Follow Tim!
