Astronomers, led by PhD student Chloe Lawlor, have discovered a second planet orbiting the young star WISPIT two, making it the second known young multi-planet system still in formation. The new gas giant, WISPIT two c, is twice as massive as its neighbor but orbits four times closer to the star, hidden in a dusty disk. Using the European Southern Observatorys Very Large Telescope Interferometer, they detected carbon monoxide gas in the planets atmosphere, revealing a rare glimpse into planet formation and how giants like those in our own system took shape.
