Astronomers, led by a PhD student from Connemara, have discovered a second planet orbiting the young star WISPIT in the Eagle constellation. This makes it only the second known system with multiple planets still forming, similar to our early Solar System. The team, including Chloe Lawlor from Galway, used the European Southern Observatorys Very Large Telescope Interferometer to confirm the existence of WISPIT two c, a young gas giant twice the size of the first planet, orbiting four times closer to the star. The discovery, published in Astrophysical Journal Letters, marks a significant step in understanding planet formation.
