In the past two years, 232 patients from Mayo, Ireland, sought treatments abroad, funded by the Health Service Executive. 134 patients went to Northern Ireland, and 98 to other EU/EEA countries. These trips occurred under two programs: the Northern Ireland scheme and the Cross Border Directive. The Northern Ireland scheme, launched in 2025, allows public patients to receive private treatments in Northern Ireland. The Cross Border Directive, established in 2013, covers public care in other EU countries. The HSE covered nearly €38 million for almost 7,000 cases in 2023. As more patients opt for these options and rules solidify, the numbers are expected to rise due to increasing demand for quicker care.
