A Closer Look at COMT and CBS Genes with Annalies Corse

The accessibility of genetic testing is on the rise, with a range of testing services now available world-wide. Although our genes are the scaffold from which we are fundamentally built, genes are not as black and white as we're led to believe. They're simply one layer of the onion, or one piece of a very large puzzle and by all accounts, this area of science is still quite new. The genes which encode for two important enzymes, catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) are vital for healthy catecholamine, catechol estrogens, several drugs and homocysteine metabolism. They have been implicated in a range of health issues ranging from decreased fertility and pre-eclampsia to behaviour and mood issues, even cancer. Today we are joined by medical scientist and naturopath, Annalies Corse, to tackle not only what the clinical relevance of these genes are, but Annalies and Andrew dive deep into the ethics and relevance of SNP testing and whether it alters the course of therapeutic interventions. Integrative Paediatrics: Autism Spectrum Disorders with Dr Elisa Song

Autism spectrum disorders are rising exponentially, and greater awareness and better diagnostics don't appear to explain the increase. Chronic Threadworm Infections with Rachel Arthur

Worms never conjure up a pleasant picture in our minds and threadworm might be more sinister than we've been led to believe. Despite much talk of the potential therapeutic activity of helminths for things like autoimmune diseases and allergies, Enterobius vermicularis (threadworm) just doesn't seem to have a nice side at all. In today's podcast we are joined by Rachel Arthur aka "The Worm Whisperer". She will be busting a few myths & misconceptions about threadworms, sharing what she's learned about breaking the cycle and resolving chronic worm infections in children and adults. Rachel's passion for worms is borne from witnessing a growing a trend of chronic worm infections in kids and adults, particularly women, which aren't responding to standard medical treatments. What she is finding is that worms are migrating into other tissues, in particular, the genitourinary system and therefore, intestinal-based therapeutic interventions just aren't cutting it. True to Rachel's unique style, she's deep dived into the available research on this topic and today she shares what she's uncovered. Pioneering the Australian Naturopathic Summit with Rachel Arthur and Nirala Jacobi

In this industry insights podcast.... It all started with the acknowledgement that there was a gap in the educational conference arena for a purely naturopathic-led event. Coming together Rachel Arthur, Nirala Jacobi, Kathryn Simpson and Nina Woods answered that call and little did they know, they would unleash a beast! Initially crowd-funding the inaugural Australian Naturopathic Summit (ANS) back in 2016, the event took shape and now, they're preparing to do it all over again in 2018. Tasked with the responsibility of making it greater than the one before, today Nirala and Rachel join us on FX Medicine to share a glimpse of what they have lined up for the forthcoming ANS 2018 in Lennox Heads. Naturopathy: What is Co-Regulation? with Peter Berryman

Registration, co-regulation, statutory registration… Bottom line, what do they all mean for naturopathy in Australia? In today's podcast, Peter Berryman recounts the rich history of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS), from it's beginnings with Dorothy Hall, through to becoming the largest Australian natural medicine association serving a plethora of clinical modalities that make up the greater complementary medicine industry. Peter joins us today to fulfil an FX Medicine podcast request we received from our community asking us to explore the other side of the statutory registration debate, namely, co-regulation. The co-regulatory model is the status quo and is supported by ATMS as the go-forward regulatory system for naturopaths in Australia. Peter covers off what this means, why they feel this is the best option and how this still supports patient and public safety. Peter and Andrew discuss the legal issues around scope of practice and protection of title as well as the powers the association holds to ensure members are trained to an agreed standard and committed to uphold the association's code of conduct.
