Nepo Homebuyers- About 39% of all homeowners received down payment help, with parents being a major source of this support The percentage is much higher for younger generations.
Roughly 78% of Gen Z homeowners and 54% of millennials received down payment help from family. Median age for a first time homebuyer is 40 years old according to NAR. It was 38 years old last year.
The typical repeat buyer is now 62. The typical U.S. homeowner stays in their house for 11.8 years, according to Redfin. More than 50% of Gen Zers and nearly 60% of millennials reported that they’re depending on their inheritance to achieve financial security and retire in comfort, per Northwestern Mutual. 2025, 50% of first-time home buyers were married couples. This data comes from the National Association of Realtors' (NAR) 2025 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers report, which typically covers the period from mid-2024 to mid-2025.
The remaining first-time buyers were:
- 25% single women
- 10% single men
- 15% unmarried couples or other household compositions
