From the publisher

I'm Ryan, and I have Autism. From the Spectrum is a podcast about Autism. I am on a mission to explain Autism. Autism emerges in human evolution as a biological adaptation, possibly through neuroplasticity, responding to environmental shifts that harness light’s energy for life. Maybe, people fail to understand how living organisms use the energy from light to drive biochemistry and organize our biology. For each episode, we will discuss various aspects of Autism. At times, we can cover lots of what seems like complex biology and especially neuroscience, but I hope to convey an easy to understand delivery and use basic analogies to enhance the episodes. Lastly, thank you for listening to From the Spectrum podcast.X: https://twitter.com/rps47586YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGxEzLKXkjppo3nqmpXpzuAemail: [email protected]

White Board Series (Audio): White Board Series: Internal Calculators (Pt. 4): Why You Persist or Quit?

Video: https://youtu.be/dUfl7hoxTQIThis episode breaks down why change feels so hard and why we often quit, avoid, or fall back into the same habits even when we know better. Building on the internal calculator framework, it shows how the brain is constantly weighing reward, cost, uncertainty, and control to decide whether to persist or disengage. Anxiety isn’t just emotional—it’s a signal that cost and uncertainty are rising, pushing the system toward avoidance. You’ll see how dopamine, norepinephrine, and deeper biological processes shape effort, quitting, and habit formation, and why your brain defaults to what is familiar and energy-efficient. Most importantly, this episode gives you a new lens to understand your own behavior—and how to interrupt the cycle when your brain is pushing you to quit.White Board Series: Autism & Motivation: The Brain’s Internal Calculators https://youtu.be/uKa3wzpRoxQ White Board Series: Autism & Motivation: Why the Brain Repeats, Avoids, Persists, or Quits https://youtu.be/5lsQIJUPgQ4 White Board Series: Why the Brain Hates Change & Chooses Habits https://youtu.be/nTs2m8SGqXcDaylight Computer Company, use "autism" for $50 off at https://buy.daylightcomputer.com/autism and Daylight Kids (!!!) https://kids.daylightcomputer.com/autism ‪Chroma Light Devices, use "autism" for 10% discount at https://getchroma.co/?ref=autism0:06 Internal calculator recap: prediction, state, value, control; Prediction error 2:53 vmPFC as the “scoreboard” (value integration system) 4:27 Value = reward − cost; the equation of behavior 5:27 “Metabolic bank accountant"6:05 Anxiety, dopamine & norepinephrine7:03 Core question: persist vs quit 8:59 Applying the model to real life 10:00 Effort vs outcome; when persistence continues 11:00 When cost rises; slowing down & quitting signals begin 12:36 “running light” vs “running heavy” 15:59 Practical tools: vision control & breathing 17:03 Quitting is mental: astrocytes & “futility signals” 18:04 Overriding the system: pushing past false limits 19:06 How vision & breath “hack” the internal calculator 19:57 Research link: persistence vs quitting (zebrafish model) 20:58 Core message: beliefs, value & behavior control your life 21:26 Behavior pattern loop: try- fail- quit- repeat 21:52 Key takeaway: shorten the gap between quitting & re-engaging 22:20 Final truth: you quit before your body actually fails X: https://x.com/rps47586 YT: https://www.youtube.com/@FromTheSpectrum email: [email protected]

Autism & Intuition: How Autistic Minds Turn Iteration into Insight

White Board Series video link https://youtu.be/9yRzZvsA8NQ?si=Hp9IQjp5unodA_BAThis episode breaks down autism and intuition from the circuitry up. Intuition isn’t magic—it’s prediction. And in the autistic brain, that prediction system runs differently. Instead of compressing uncertainty into fast social “gut feelings,” autistic cognition preserves high-resolution detail, sustains prediction error, and builds insight through iterative modeling. Sensory cortex, parietal salience maps, insula, amygdala, OFC, and ACC all play a role in a system that prioritizes structural truth over social smoothing. We explore excitation–inhibition balance, oscillations, dopamine learning, and von Economo neurons to show how intuition in autism isn’t diminished—it’s reconstructed. Insight may arrive later, but when it does, it’s deeply refined. This is a neuroscience-driven look at why autistic minds resolve uncertainty through coherence, not conformity—and why that difference matters. This episode will also explain WHY the Autistic phenotype has ACCELERATED LEARNING abilities.use "autism" for $50 off at Daylight Computer Company https://buy.daylightcomputer.com/autismand Daylight Kids https://kids.daylightcomputer.com/autismChroma Light Devices, use "autism" for 10% discount at https://getchroma.co/?ref=autism0:00 Autism & Intuition Introduction; Autos (“Self”) and Sensory Overload0:53 Daylight Computer Company, Daylight Kids & Chroma Light Devices (Technology, Biology, Light)3:26 What Intuition Really Is: Sensory Integration, Prediction, Memory, and Value5:02 Neurotypical vs Autistic Intuition; Prediction Error, E/I Balance, Iterative Processing7:00 Sensory Cortex & Higher Signal Fidelity; Prediction Errors and Raw Detail Preservation11:30 Posterior Parietal Cortex; Salience Maps, Anomaly Detection, Truth vs Social Narrative13:30 Anterior Insula & Amygdala; Interoception, Emotional Salience, Feeling vs Thinking17:30 Orbitofrontal Cortex; Value Computation, Internal Coherence vs Social Reward19:30 ACC Conflict Monitoring; Risk–Reward, Persistence, Errors23:30 The Learning Gate: Why Autism Enables Accelerated Mastery24:45 Von Economo (Spindle) Neurons; ACC–Insula Fast Intuition Pathway and Autism Differences28:40 Iterative Learning Loop; Prefrontal Modeling, Basal Ganglia Dopamine, Structural Coherence35:50 Autos (“Self”), Jung, Recursive Modeling, and Why Autistic Intuition Is Built—Not GivenX: https://x.com/rps47586YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGxEzLKXkjppo3nqmpXpzuARF Safe: https://rfsafe.org/mel/podcasts.php?pick=source%3Afromthespectrumemail: [email protected]

White Board Series (Audio Version): Basal Ganglia (Go/No-GO), Neural Correlates, & "Motivation"

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTW8CSPVEGcIn this whiteboard episode, we revisit the basal ganglia's intricate circuitry, detailing its five subcortical nuclei—dorsal striatum (caudate/putamen inputs), globus pallidus externa/subthalamic relays, and globus pallidus interna/substantia nigra reticulata outputs—driving the classic direct (facilitatory "go") and indirect (suppressive "no-go") pathways for action selection and inhibition. Excitatory cortical inputs converge on medium spiny neurons, finely tuned by dopamine (D1 excitatory/D2 inhibitory via substantia nigra pars compacta), serotonin, and acetylcholine, to orchestrate habits, motivation, and movement suppression through thalamic modulation. In autism, morphological alterations in medium spiny neurons—enlarged dendritic spines and reduced synaptic flexibility—bias toward repetitive behaviors, ritualized patterns, and intensely fixated interests (DSM-5 B2/B3 criteria), underscoring the circuit's preference for sameness via strengthened plasticity and limited prefrontal override.Daylight Computer Company, use "autism" for $50 off at https://buy.daylightcomputer.com/autismChroma Light Devices, use "autism" for 10% discount at https://getchroma.co/?ref=autismFig Tree Christian Golf Apparel & Accessories, use "autism" for 10% discount at https://figtreegolf.com/?ref=autismCognity AI for Autistic Social Skills, use "autism" for 10% discount at https://thecognity.com00:00 Basal Ganglia Intro Review prior episodes on basal ganglia (48-50 + 47); key for movements, habits, motivation, repetition in autism00:55 Five Subcortical Areas Dorsal striatum (caudate/putamen = inputs); relays (globus pallidus external, subthalamic nucleus); outputs (globus pallidus internal, substantia nigra reticulata)02:54 Direct Pathway (Go) Excitatory cortex → dorsal striatum → inhibits internal pallidus/reticulata → frees thalamus → activates movement06:34 Indirect Pathway (No-Go) Cortex → dorsal striatum → external pallidus → subthalamic → excites outputs → inhibits thalamus → suppresses movement11:25 Major Inputs Cortex (esp. sensory-motor/prefrontal); thalamus (alerts); substantia nigra compacta (dopamine D1/D2 modulation)13:32 Modulators & Cortex Regions Serotonin (patience); acetylcholine (focus shift); inputs from sensory-motor (habits), prefrontal (planning), parietal (context)18:42 Medium Spiny Neurons Dorsal striatum cells with larger spines; repetitive firing strengthens synapses (morphology/plasticity)23:20 Autistic Differences Larger dendrites/spines → limited flexibility; favors sameness/habits; reduced prefrontal influence28:42 DSM Criteria B2/B3 Link B2: repetitive behaviors/rituals; B3: restricted/fixated interests—core autistic traits tied to basal ganglia habits/intensity32:24 Motivation & Change Basal ganglia (not individual) defines motivation via strengthened connections; explains difficulty with change, splinter skillsX: https://x.com/rps47586YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGxEzLKXkjppo3nqmpXpzuAemail: [email protected]
