Mentorship with Dr. Deborah Heiser

Franchising with Max Emma
This week’s theme: Franchising Franchising offers a proven playbook that simplifies the path to success. It’s not just about learning what to do but understanding what not to do. While anyone can figure out how to run a business independently, the trial-and-error process can be costly in both time and money. Franchising helps eliminate this learning curve by providing a detailed roadmap, allowing franchisees to bypass common mistakes and focus on growth from the start. With franchising, everything is laid out step-by-step, from operational procedures to the layout. This structure ensures consistency and efficiency, saving years of trial and error. The question isn’t whether you can figure it out on your own but how much time and potential income you can save when guided by an established system. By starting with the right tools and knowledge on day one, franchising allows entrepreneurs to build a successful business with confidence and clarity. Max Emma The story of BooXkeeping begins with Max Emma, who emigrated from the former Soviet Union and found corporate accounting unfulfilling. After leaving corporate America in 2002, he ran a landscape maintenance business, growing it to $4 million before the 2008 recession and poor financial oversight led to bankruptcy. Learning from this experience, Max restarted his journey, outsourcing bookkeeping for his new business and noticing inefficiencies in the industry. This inspired him to launch BooXkeeping, which began as a garage-based side project but soon became his primary focus. Today, BooXkeeping serves over 95 franchise brands and has grown into a successful franchise with 11 locations. Max’s vision for BooXkeeping centers on redefining bookkeeping by offering outsourced solutions that prioritize efficiency and client needs. The franchise model emphasizes affordability, work-life balance, and comprehensive support for franchisees, including marketing, technology, and client acquisition assistance. BooXkeeping’s innovative approach gained traction during the post-COVID-19 era as businesses sought alternatives to traditional in-house bookkeeping. With its #CoolBeanCounters community, the brand injects personality into an often-overlooked industry, empowering franchisees to connect with clients through a blend of professional expertise and personal understanding. Chief People Officer Elena adds a human-centric dimension to the franchise model, offering personalized coaching to support franchisees in navigating the challenges of business ownership. With structured systems and an emphasis on personal growth, BooXkeeping transforms the franchisee experience into a journey of empowerment and success. The company’s dedication to its franchisees and clients ensures a thriving business model that continues to innovate and expand. Copyrights and Contracts with Erin Austin
This week’s theme: Copyrights and Contracts Why copyrights and contracts? Owning and controlling intellectual property is essential for scaling any expertise-based business. Copyright law protects your original works, giving you exclusive rights to distribute, reproduce, and permit their use. The rise of AI-generated content has introduced challenges. AI outputs cannot be copyrighted, as copyright law requires a human creator. This leaves AI-generated work unprotected and open for use by others. And what about protecting your work from AI and others? To safeguard your rights, it’s crucial to address copyright and ownership issues in your contracts. Clearly defining who owns the intellectual property—whether it’s created by you, collaborators, or AI—is essential in maintaining control and preventing disputes. Be the Producer with Randy Adkins Jr.
This week’s theme: Be the Producer In this episode, we explore the concept of life’s metaphorical masks, inspired by the ancient Greek tradition of actors wearing masks. Just as actors and actresses portray characters on screen, many of us navigate life by playing roles scripted by others. The faces we see on movie billboards are just representations of people following someone else’s storyline. Similarly, we often follow paths defined by external expectations. Imagine your life as a movie. Instead of acting according to someone else’s script, take it a step further and be the producer of your own life. Producers shape the vision, hire the directors and actors, and bring everything together to create the final product. They ensure all elements work in harmony. In your own life, gather the people and resources you need to produce the life you desire. Embrace your unique purpose, break free from the masks, and craft your own narrative. Adventures in Storytelling with Dave Bricker
This week’s theme: Adventures in Storytelling Many leaders often approach their organizations with a functional mindset, viewing them through the lens of efficiency and productivity. However, this perspective often overlooks the fundamental human aspect of organizational dynamics. People aren’t merely cogs in a wheel; they are individuals driven by emotions, aspirations, and the need for connection. To truly motivate and engage employees, it’s essential to tap into the power of narrative or adventures in storytelling. By crafting a compelling story around the organization’s mission, values, and goals, leaders can instill a sense of purpose and belonging among their teams. People are more likely to invest themselves fully when they feel like they’re part of something meaningful and when their contributions align with a broader narrative. From Fear to Fire: Secrets to Overcome Fear, Embrace your Gifts and Achieve Success This is the place where real people share real challenges. Where you can find a common bond and uncommon wisdom through their stories. Use tips from the breakthroughs of others to jump start your success. Speaker, author, adventurer, and host Heather Hansen O’Neill takes you on the journey from fear to fire. Today we talk about why leaders need to know about storytelling in their organizations. Dave Bricker As a young man, Dave Bricker was inspired by the remarkable people he met in Miami’s “secret floating village.” The sailboat anchorage a quarter-mile off-shore from Miami City Hall attracted world travelers, squatters, dreamers, and bums. All had remarkable stories to tell. By the time he graduated college, he was living aboard his own tiny sailboat. Soon after graduation, he set sail for the Bahamas with a locker full of food and dreams … and $40 in his pocket. His voyages took him up and down the Bahamas, up the east coast of the US to Chesapeake Bay, and across the Atlantic to Gibraltar. He ran aground, dealt with mechanical breakdowns, got seasick more than once, slept in a volcano, survived powerful storms, and returned to the land of clocks and calendars with what he’d gone in search of—stories of his own. Today, as a speaker, trainer, and coach, he helps remarkable people tell remarkable stories—through writing, speaking, graphic design, video, technology, and music. If you want to say it, share it, or sell it, bring Dave Bricker your story; he’ll help you tell it.
