Show Notes

The Library of Congress has added two significant artworks from 1855 to its collection, showcasing early views of Yosemite Valley. Artist Thomas Almond Ayres graphite and ink drawing, The High Falls, Valley of the Yo Semity, California, and its matching lithograph, The Yo-Hamite Falls, capture Yosemite Falls and will soon be viewable online. Ayres sketched the drawing during his firsthand visit, joining publisher James Mason Hutchings and Miwok guides on a trail to this Indigenous summer ground. The drawing is remarkable for its sense of peace and grandeur, beating out famous later works like Carleton Watkins photos and Albert Bierstadt paintings. These additions highlight how artists first shared Yosemites wonders long before crowds arrived, tying into Americas two hundred and fifty celebrations.
