Show Notes
25-year-old mountain biker, Julian Hernandez, from Costa Mesa, California, tragically passed away after a rattlesnake bite on a local trail. The incident, which occurred on February first, led to a coma and weeks in intensive care. Hernandezs family announced his passing on March fourth. Rattlesnakes, common in California, are known for their gray or light brown skin, triangular heads, and lengths of two to four feet. They often hide under rocks or logs and rattle to warn before striking. The death has highlighted the importance of outdoor safety, especially as warmer weather increases trail activity. Bites are rare but serious, typically occurring when people accidentally step on or near snakes. Experts advise staying calm and seeking immediate help if bitten. If bitten, call emergency services, stay calm, and keep the wound below heart level. Avoid sucking out venom, cutting the wound, using a tourniquet, or applying ice. To prevent bites, stick to trails, wear sturdy boots and long pants, watch your step, and keep a safe distance from snakes. Check sleeping gear and logs before use, and avoid tall grass or nighttime hikes. Pets also need prompt veterinary care if bitten, with symptoms including swelling and pain.
