California Farmers in Central Valley Hold Cautious Optimism for Summer Growing Season
Farmers in Californias Central Valley are looking to the snow-covered mountains in Fresno and Tulare counties for hope, as the snowpack promises water for their crops. However, the latest allocations from the Bureau of Reclamation show a mixed picture. East side districts are receiving 100% of their class one deliveries, but west side contractors in Fresno, Kings, and Merced counties are only getting 15%. Fresno County Farm Bureau CEO Ryan Jacobsen attributes this to reservoir levels, rainfall, and snow totals. He notes that while theyre in a fair spot now, more storms would be beneficial. The third snow survey by the Department of Water Resources measured 28 inches of snow depth statewide, with 11 inches of water equivalent—about 66% of average. Another survey is scheduled for April 1st, and groups like the Kings River Water Association are providing additional data to help farmers plan for the melt and deliveries.
