Water Babies are mythical, often dangerous spirits in Western folklore, particularly among Great Basin tribes like the Shoshone and Paiute, appearing as drowned infants or water creatures that lure people to their deaths with crying sounds. They are also found in Charles Kingsley's "Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale For A Land-Baby" which describes the Queen of Fairies luring children into the water to transform them into infant water creatures.
