Show Notes
On February 27, 1951, the Twenty-second Amendment was ratified, limiting the president to two terms. This amendment, however, was the culmination of over a century of efforts. The first proposal for presidential term restrictions was made in 1788, and an informal tradition of retiring after two terms was established in 1876. This tradition was broken only once, by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served over twelve years. The amendment was finalized in 1952 and ratified by thirty-six states, including Indiana, securing the two-term rule.
