Charles Tortorich, Crohn's Disease and NSNG
E: Episode 577 - Charles "Frankie" Tortorich, Vinnie's brother is an NSNG success story. He and Vinnie reminisce about their Glory Days in HS sports, Charles' Crohn's disease and NSNG, and how Charles started listening to what Vinnie says about nutrition. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR Pure Vitamin Club CHARLES TORTORICH & FOOTBALL Vinnie's younger brother Was a good athlete, but not a college D1 athlete like Vinnie Used to work really hard with Vinnie Football in the south is the talk of the town Vinnie was a town celebrity All sports are a huge deal Mark, the youngest brother, was the best at playing all-around football Unfortunately, he did not follow through with that path Vinnie had to beef up in highschool to put on muscle for football because he is only 5'11-6' Neither of the Tortorich parents were athletic; just super academic In highschool, life revolved around football The whole family would attend! CROHN'S DISEASE AND NSNG Charles figured out he had Crohn's disease when he was a teenager They didn't know much about the disease other than the fact that he would sit on the toilet and bleed a lot Spent about 2 months total in the hospital as a teenager He couldn't eat or drink Charles now follows NSNG, although he didn't use to listen to Vinnie because he is his brother His coworkers came around and made him listen Charles was overweight with borderline high blood pressure and realized he had to make a lifestyle change He didn't want to take medicine for something he could change/avoid He initially was baby-stepping for NSNG Ex: for breakfast, he wouldn't eat grits (polenta, straight grains with some butter) Charles has found he feels much better, has better blood pressure, and his Crohn's does not flare up as much He doesn't even follow it to the T but has still lost lots of weight Overall, he cut down a lot and lost ~26 lbs
Ivor Cummins and the Cholesterol Conundrum
E: Episode 576 - Ivor Cummins, a biochemical engineer, goes into detail about the Cholesterol Conundrum. Modern research has clearly proven that the root cause of arterial plaque is insulin resistance, most likely caused by high amounts of carbohydrates, not high cholesterol or high fat. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Villa Cappelli Squatty Potty Pure Vitamin Club IVOR CUMMINS The Cholesterol Conundrum video here Chemical engineer Was told he had to cut down his cholesterol He didn't just listen to the doctor He dug down the rabbit hole and DID NOT lower cholesterol Hails from Dublin, Ireland IVOR'S CHOLESTEROL STORY & CONCLUSION His cholesterol was a bit high Liver enzymes (GGT and serum ferritin) were INCREDIBLY high He asked the doctors what this meant & asked them what to do They came back with very weak and unsure answers Because of his science background & his family, he did not accept this answer He values his health and this was not enough He started researching after visiting 3 unsure doctors Once he started researching, he found that very high GGT meant a reduced lifespan Gamma glutamyl transferase Liver enzyme High levels = high inflammation in the liver The liver has SO many functions, including making cholesterol Excessive alcohol raises this, but he does not drink a lot He found that high levels are associated with Fatty-liver disease which comes from eating too many carbs Around 30% of adults have fatty liver disease Carbs, sugar, and insulin resistance are the problem Serum ferritin is a marker for metabolic syndrome His was so high because he had been eating carbs and sugar & had this disease Ivor's diet at the time: Quite a bit of pasta, bread, rice Tried to not eat fat He basically ate what the governments (incorrectly) press one to eat Although for the most part he followed the "food pyramid" he always ate butter instead of margarine More and more research showing that those who have high cholesterol are super sensitive to carbs Vitamins are important to regulate all these as wells IMPORTANT VITAMINS 70-80% of people are deficient in magnesium check out PVC broad spectrum magnesium! People are deficient in K2 (those who eat low fat especially) Vitamin D and sun exposure are very important as well Fitness and cardiovascular health Disease conditions can drive Vitamin D even lower Blood pressure drops with good Vitamin D/sun exposure Arteries relax Sun Exposure increases vasodilation Normal sun is more important than Vitamin D pills, but if you can't get out in the sun, do take a Vitamin D supplement Sun-related dangers are so so insignificant compared to the danger of cars etc. Also most sun-damage is fixable (melanoma is the bad one, though) LESS likely to have melanoma with MORE general sun exposure Ex: outdoor workers have not increased melanoma like indoor workers in the last 40 years

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Pure Vitamin Club Villa Cappelli Squatty Potty KRISTEN AND MARNI They have a show on Playboy Radio called "Ask Women" Vinnie was on their show recently Their show is largely about men becoming good with the ladies Help men attract women with HONEST advice A lot of Vinnie's callers also ask for help with the ladies Their podcast fills a niche, making it successful Check out Marni's website here Check out Kristen's website here WEIGHT, RELATIONSHIPS, AND BODY IMAGE A lot of men who are overweight lose weight and think they will be a ladies magnet However, physical is not NEARLY as important to women as men Men need to work on their personalities and who they are as a person instead of obsessing over body image Many people lose the weight, then ask "now what" They want to go back to their old diet but that will put the weight right back on In high school, Kristen struggled with her 'image' as she had a crossed eye and thick glasses She was bullied and had a negative body imagine from the start She changed schools at 17 Vinnie relates to this because he was really picked on (he was deaf/speech challenged when he was little and it carried all the way through high school) Marni felt awkward and shy, although she was more outgoing than she gave herself credit for, but she did have to deal with lots of bullying The bullying that the two endured still affects them to an extent although now the two have great self worth Many beautiful women are insecure because they were bullied and brought down when they were younger Both tried to be healthy by eating less and then binge-eating, which actually hurt their weight Going to the gym made them 'bulk up' which caused them to obsess because they wanted to be lean
Building Muscle Without Bulking Up

Called in and had a great phone call with Vinnie Was under the impression that you had to eat more calories (whether they were good or bad) to gain muscle BUILDING MUSCLE WITHOUT BULKING UP You don't necessarily need to take in more calories/carbs to get lean muscle Your muscles may get bigger this way, but so does your stomach Andy was 6'5 and ~140 lbs, they made him try to "bulk up" by putting tons of powders into milkshakes and such He got some fat around the middle which he didn't need Makes you feel a 'pump', but doesn't help muscle growth and can hurt your health Your muscles will build at the same rate, whether you're 17 or 70 You won't RECOVER as fast, but your muscles still break down/divide/rebuild at the same rate Packing on extra calories doesn't make those muscles build faster Don't listen to BroScience

This guide has the worst sentence structure and awful grammar 6 types of nutrients Carbs, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Water What do nutrients provide? (Very misinformed) Energy (Carbs, Fats, Proteins) No calories - Vitamins, Minerals, Water Grains - They advocate eating whole grains Veggies - vitamin A Fruits - vitamin C, eat a variety They do recognize that many juices add sugar but still say you can have 100% fruit juice This is still unfortunately, still straight sugar Milk - calcium They say to go low fat or fat free with dairy Wrong! When you pull fat out, it is basically straight sugar Meat - protein They say to choose low fat, lean They say to put meat with beans -- starchy carb Gotta be carful about doing this "Limit fats because they don't have nutrients and only have calories" 100% incorrect You need that macronutrient to live It seems to be vilifying meat and fat and highlighting grains "Eat whole grains!" Nothing will cause a heart attack faster than a "heart healthy" gran "Eat starchy vegetables -- there is no bad vegetables." Incorrect both factually and grammar-wise #beanspairs

DR. NATASCHA Not including her last name, for anonymity sake An old caller -- both she and her husband have called in multiple times Originally from Germany, also plays the cello! STATINS & OVERMEDICATION Good to get a full particle panel before starting (and stopping) statins You might not need a statin A lot of doctors cannot read a particle test Triglycerides, LDLs (low -- bring sugar into your body to store), HDLs (high -- poop stuff out), VLDLs (very low) Statin can just modulate your putting 'crap' into your body If you are eating very healthily, there are few people who actually need a statin EATING "HEALTHY" FORTIFIED FOODS AND AVOIDING FATS On the box, it says that it is "fortified" iron and healthy wheat Wheat is never healthy You don't need to "fortify" a steak -- it already has iron Real food already has all of the vitamins and minerals so you do not need to eat fortified foods Creatine is made by your body already, and is also found in meat -- you don't need pills! We don't need to be concerned with obscure things like Riboflavin Never has been an issue before, so why are people making it an issue now? People want to be healthy, but they turn on the TV, and the TV says a microwavable weight watchers meal is what is best What must change is what people are taught Fat is NOT the enemy! EDUCATING PEOPLE ABOUT NSNG When Dr. Natascha gets new patients, she has to try to figure out whether or not she should mention NSNG Some people will not hear it She works in a hospital where the cafeteria serves high-carbs What will help people short and long term? She tries to educate those who will listen, and those who have time to try this lifestyle with some error Doctors also have guidelines and ratings Insurance or a board will look at why diabetics have high levels and no statin, even when really they should be NSNG and be even healthier A healthy patient is not a widget There are so many factors Start with sugar is bad, limit your sugar, and educate on the different types of sugar ex: fruit juice extract is still a sugar Check out Food Politics here FRUIT & OTHER SNACKS Fruit went away in the winter years ago Now because of GMOs and other methods, people eat fruit year round Dangerous in a way due to the fact that sugar is so readily available even when naturally it should not be Sugar is sugar, but still a better option than a snickers bar In the 70s, things like Wheat Thins, and Protein bars, and "Healthy" Meal Replacements did not exist People just ate real food People have a powerful wrong perception of what is healthy due to the industry

We are programmed NOT to eat too many calories (Leptin) If calories were the issue, then restricting calories would not make you feel bad and would allow you to shed the weight That is not true You have to figure out what is adjusting your own personal 'thermostat', and bring it down Cortisol levels skyrocketing (due to stress, sleep deprivation, etc) can help obesity along If stress and sleep deprivation is what is causing it, you have to change your lifestyle because diet won't work if that is the case Obesity is not a caloric imbalance, it is a hormonal imbalance Both with insulin and with cortisol (two big factors) Beer belly type fat is usually cortisol, where overall fatness is usually insulin HUGE role with metabolizing glucose Obesity is a multifactorial disease Lypodystrophy Super rare condition that causes dystrophy (breakdown) of adipose tissue LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS When you address proximate cause, it does nothing, must treat the ACTUAL cause When you reduce your calories, you have to burn more than you lose to burn fat, you can't just address the proximate cause which is reducing the calories

Vinnie doesn't want this to be super extreme That being said, allowing "cheat days" is not the way to go You can put LIL occasionally, but not have a whole day of doing whatever you want Try to have 21 or so stricter days, to get your body on this lifestyle so that when you do put LIL, your body can handle it better The first 3 weeks are hard and you have to want it It really does get easier, though Cut out her normal wine or beer for a spirit instead for 21 days -- that will make a difference Her cravings for chocolate started to disappear! You can't keep going back and forth on NSNG -- must impede the progress in the negative direction You can't get "a little bit pregnant", same type of deal!

Saturday podcast with her will be coming up in the future CHEST Do not do EVERY exercise in one day How to choose how to build your chest: If you're not trying to become a bodybuilder, at the very most pick 3 exercises per workout that focus on Chest Ex: bench press, incline, decline, dips, dumbbell press, flat fly, incline fly, decline fly, pushups Hit it and quit it -- your body can only handle so much Start with major exercise, then do two minor exercises Also, make sure you are warmed up with a light weight exercise first (this does not count as 1 of your 3 exercises) How much weight (8-9 sets of press) Reps: 12-15 is good, you want to be hurting at rep 12 (weight wise) and wondering if you can get to 15 If you are doing 8 reps, you want to be 'struggling' at rep 6 Free weights make sure someone is spotting you Don't overwork triceps either (tricep extensions) More is not necessarily better QUITTING SUGAR If you aren't going to quit grain, your liver doesn't know that you quit sugar It might help quitting just sugar, but not ever really effective until you quit both PUTTING LIFE INTO LIVING You can enjoy sugar or grain every once in awhile, just dont go crazy and don't make it a habit, then it is a slippery slope Vinnie has done 2 years of NLIL and hasn't found ways around it He never told himself lies and ate agave or fake sugars or anything like that If you want to do NLIL, don't lie to yourself -- your liver won't believe you!

Easy to snack on what your kids don't finish on their plate Must be honest where hidden sugar and grains may be Have to give NSNG a full 60 days with NLIL Vinaigrette is touchy because lots of sugar Men tend to get quicker results than men Look at other positives that you get from NSNG if weight loss isn't happening right away, and let that be enough while your body resets Clearer skin, less asthma, less foggy, better sleep, etc If after 6mos of strict NSNG, look at your hormones and everything

He was doing weight watchers when he joined He is a favorite around here Check out his old podcasts Right now, Jess is about the heaviest he's ever been Well over 500 lbs He has tried everything to lose weight but is derailed He wants to make life the reason he SHOULD lose weight, but instead uses life as an excuse to eat what he wants The greatest he ever felt, however, was when he started NSNG lost 75lbs in one month went about 6 mos and lost a bunch of weight He didn't know how to handle keeping the weight off/handling his success Once work got more stressful, he didn't keep up packing his meals, etc. Instead he ordered food, went to restaurants, etc. Once he got laid off, it made it even harder to get back on track GETTING DERAILED FROM NSNG It is easy to get derailed when you are dealing with life Can be grief, can be a few holiday meals, can be lots of work that gets you off of NSNG and makes it hard to get back on If you do go off course, just get back on the next meal you're able to! It is hard to approach the emotional side of it NSNG can make you feel better, too It's okay to go off for awhile to deal with your feelings, but eventually your body will want to go back to NSNG Try to get back on as soon as possible -- once you dive back in, you CAN succeed!

Because Anne had a sugar addiction, she wants to be careful about eating too much fruit In the morning, Anne will have mixed berries with chia seeds, coconut and some almond milk and eat that with egg/vegetable dish For lunch Anne will have some meat and salad without fruit At night, Anne will have some apple and grapes with almond butter, etc. Anne hasn't broken the cycle but she is close Her body is still using fruit to bridge the sugar gap She needs to break the fruit cycle then she can go back to fruit later on once the "hanger" after dinner stops Sugar causes our body to release grelin which makes our feelings of hunger come back Eventually, once Anne's body becomes more fat adapted (this is not the same as in ketosis), fruit can be re-introduced without the same effects Harder to become fat adapted while eating fruit Becoming fat adapted can take anywhere from 15-60 days You won't be hangry anymore No pain and no pangs Better to stay away from the more tropical fruits Berries are the best!! Lowest Glycemic Index WHAT ABOUT LACTOSE? Everyone is different You have to test it, and if you plateau and/or gain weight while drinking milk nd eating lots of yogurt, try cutting it out and seeing what works You have to tweak your body to buy into ketone bodies Once your body figures everything out, you can re-introduce, etc.

Brisk Walking vs. Weightlifting

ARTICLE ON LOSING WEIGHT There was an article that discussed whether brisk walking or working out was a better way to lose weight In part, depends on what you do at the gym They did not even touch on diet Exercise is a poor way to lose weight! WALKING OR WEIGHTLIFTING TO LOSE WEIGHT Bottom line is, having a good diet is necessary ALSO to lose weight Walking, you might burn more fat calories and maybe make it to zone 2 Trying to keep up with Andy will make you lose 300 calories However if you go eat a bag of M&Ms after, you’ve negated the calories you’ve lost Calorie in calorie out doesn’t work so that is why exercise doesn’t work as well as diet to lose weight Walking is good and heart healthy In your 30s, you start to lose pounds of muscle, so weightlifting can be good to help this Depending on what the weightlifting is, you may burn more fat calories At the end of the day, neither will really MAKE you lose weight Do both to stay healthy and help weight loss
