This week, Matt Newlin and I talk about his role consulting with college campuses about creating successful systems for first-generation, rural, and low-income students. We spend time talking about Matt's journey to and through college, move into a conversation about debt management and financial literacy, and then helping faculty understand what it means when we talk about social capital for first-gen students. Matt is all about an asset-based framework and talks about how he frames this for the colleges he works with. We also spend time talking about a rural student initiative he worked on, and what it's like to navigate college spaces.

Dr. Matt Newlin has a BA in English and Communication from the University of Missouri in Columbia, a Masters in Higher Education from the University of Missouri - St. Louis, and and Ed.D. from Maryville University of St. Louis. He is currently the founder of Matt Newlin Consulting, a dissertation advisor at Gwynedd Mercy University.

Matt can be reached at [email protected] and has his own podcast, The Rural College Student Experience.
