Chris earnt his stripes working for some 12 years with funds management luminaries Geoff Wilson and Matthew Kidman and the team at Wilson Asset Management, the majority as Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager responsible for managing the investment team and overseeing the investment portfolios. He did well. So much so that in 2014, the Australian Financial Review named Chris as one of the Five Best Young Fund Managers in Australia. In 2019 Chris co-founded 1851 Capital leveraging his 22 years’ experience in the Australian funds management industry, and kicked off his one and only fund at the start of February in 2020. With COVID, unbeknown to Chris, literally around the corner, timing was everything and provides for a fascinating insight into investment portfolio management in very challenging times. Outside of investment management, Chris is also Deputy Chairman of the foundation of his beloved Sydney AFL team the Sydney Swans. This certainly is a captivating conversation. Our special guest for this fantastic episode of Finding the Front is Kyle De Souza, leading Resources Analyst for Euroz Hartleys and immediate past President of the WA School of Mines Alumni. Originally from Bombay in India, Kyle aged 7, with his family moved to Perth and went about settling into life in WA. Graduating from the WA School of Mines with Honours, he built a career as a mining engineer, spending some 15 years in hard rock mining across Western Australia. Over this period, Kyle achieved both a First Class Mine Managers Certificate of Competency and an Underground Shift Supervisors Certificate of Competency – not easy by any stretch. Kyle was invited to join the Council of the WA School of Mines Alumni in 2012. His career progressed to an established and valued position within mining success story Saracen Minerals. He then decided to make an important but difficult decision to pivot his career in a new direction towards the financial markets taking a role as a Resources Equity Analyst with the Equities Research team in Euroz Hartleys. He was appointed to the highly regarded role of President of the WA School of Mines Alumni in 2022 for a 3 year term. This is an absolute ripper with so many reflections and insights of life and building a career overlayed with a love of the mining industry and the people in it. Our very special guest is John Rothwell AO, the Founder, former Executive Chair and current Independent Non-Executive Director of Australian ship building success story Austal. John arrived in Australia from the Netherlands around age 10 and didn’t speak English, he left school at age 15 and followed his entrepreneurial spirit that kicked in early. John worked out early that he loved making things and was good with his hands. He built his first boat at age 13 and wacked a motorcycle engine in it to make it go. Austal was founded in 1988 and the rest is history. It is now one of Australia’s largest defence exporter and the first ASX listed shipbuilder with a current market cap of more than $2bln and has designed and constructed over 350 vessels for commercial and defence operators in 59 countries worldwide. It has major defence contracts with the US Navy. John provides a detailed insight into this remarkable story and growing Austal to be the phenomenal company it is today. In this episode we have a wonderful opportunity to meet and learn about one of Australia’s most experienced Pharmaceutical and Biotech CEOs and entrepreneurs, Mr Peter Molloy. Peter is the founder and executive chairman of Firebrick Pharma, stock code FRE, a company that has developed a breakthrough nasal spray medicine that targets the viral cause of the common cold. Peter has an unbelievable background in this Pharmaceutical and Biotech sector and provides us a thought provoking understanding of what it has taken to become a leader in this field. He is a qualified microbiologist and biochemist who built a who built a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry, initially at Faulding (Aust) where as a microbiologist and marketer he was integral in the launch of the Betadine Sore Throat Gargle which been an incredible success, and then at Pharmacia, later to become Pfizer, where he was Managing Director of Australia/NZ operations and later International Vice President for Strategic Marketing. During his career, Peter launched some 23 new pharmaceutical products and executed no less than 40 international licensing or distribution deals. Subsequently, he was CEO of four biotech companies in US and Australia, including two ASX-listed firms. As CEO of antiviral drug development company, Biota Holdings Limited (2002-2005), the company’s market value grew from $30m to around $300m. Subsequently, as founding CEO of Race Oncology (2016-2020), the company's market value grew from $12m to more than $400m during 2021. In this broad ranging conversation Peter also provides his seriously informed insights into the Australian Biotech sector and the industry as a whole.
