April 15th is National Anime Day, a day that celebrates the Japanese art form known as anime. Once obscure, anime has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, affecting nearly every aspect of US entertainment – including an anime film taking home the Best Animated Feature Oscar last year. A-list celebrities and diehard anime fans such as Ryan Reynolds, Megan Thee Stallion, Ariana Grande and Michael B. Jordan have incorporated anime into their own films and performances. The streaming service Crunchyroll has made anime more accessible to a wider audience than ever before. The podcast Crunchyroll Presents: The Anime Effect serves as an introduction to the anime curious. Two of the show’s hosts Nicholas Friedman and LeAlec Murray can discuss the reasons behind anime’s surge in popularity and how it continues to shape our popular culture and entertainment.
