Native Indigenous filmmaker/director Patrick Shannon's current film, “Saints and Warriors” is a documentary that chronicles the journey of the Skidegate Saints, an iconic Indigenous basketball team from Haida Gwaii, Canada. The film follows the team’s efforts to defend their championship title at the 2024 All Native Basketball Tournament while simultaneously engaging in a political struggle to reclaim their ancestral lands from governmental control established under the Indian Act of 1876. The film highlights how basketball serves as a vital cultural tool for the Haida people, intertwining themes of resilience, community leadership, and cultural survival against a backdrop of historical injustices. Through this lens, “Saints and Warriors” illustrates the profound impact of sports on identity and activism within Indigenous communities.
