“I was fascinated by these sounding stairs on the entrance / exit of a park in Kaunas, Lithuania. I heard the sound from afar, and thought it was in my head until I came closer…”

“I was way up in a crows nest style ‘box’ at the back of the mezzanine in the Princess Theatre for Aldous Harding’s concert. I recorded the crowd trying to lure her back for an encore after a brilliant set.”

“A really windy night in the days just before Halloween swept what was left from the old silver maple trees in the neighbourhood. As the final few fell to earth, gusts swept them up into piles and down the road. That sound of chasing leaves always reminds me that winter here is just around the corner.”

“I went to Brianna Ghey’s vigil last night outside the Department of Education. It was a very emotional and affecting time, with people standing together holding candles and lighters, whilst chanting Brianna Ghey’s name. We are in the midst of what feels like a suffocatingly transphobic time, but to stand united in love and solidarity for our trans and non-binary siblings felt powerful. I recorded the one minute silence that was held at 7pm, after which we all collectively chanted her name. The silence that hangs in the air after fizzes with anger, power, love and hope. It was heartbreaking and breathtaking.”

“Plymouth Nighttime — Recorded August 31, 2022 in Plymouth, MA. We were staying at a house on a bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay. At night you could see the lights of Pronvincetown across the water. Recorded with binaural mics / Zoom H1n on the deck of the house, facing east.”

“On January 7th I went to an unusual Orthodox Christmas service at the Catholic Church of St. Johns in Vilnius where the service was led by a chaplain father Heorhiy Kovalenko visiting from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kyjiv.  The service was organized by the Lithuanian Orthodox priests who left Moscow Patriarchate and are now serving Ukrainian refugees and other members of the Orthodox community in Lithuania who do not want to pray in the churches of Moscow Patriarchate. This was a very moving bilingual service, where father Heorhiy Kovalenko was praying in Ukrainian for all those displaced by the war and those helping them, and the carol singers (if this is a correct term) were answering in both Ukrainian and Lithuanian.”

“The February full moon had just come up and I was on a stunning Saturday afternoon walk around sunset, the sky was a beautiful red. I stopped by the Tammisalo canal for a few minutes which was still frozen but beginning to thaw very loudly.”

“It gets really dark in Eskdalemuir. In winter it is sometimes so dark and foggy that you can literally see nothing. Once or twice a winter I step out my back door and can hear the sound of geese flying and honking directly over head. They feel really close. This can last for hours and is wonderfully creepy as you can never actually see the geese. We call this Goose Night.”

“There are three churches within earshot of the spot where this recording was made, in the Swiss village of Flüeli-Ranft, and their bells overlap but do not synchronise. A local told me that this is intentional, to ensure their distinct timbres can be clearly distinguished. I was reminded of a wonderful Swiss film I saw earlier this year, Unrest, set in a 19th Century mountain town in which four marginally different time zones are observed simultaneously: one for the factory, one for the train station, one for the post office, and one for the church. When all three churches fell silent, I was lucky enough to capture another set of bells—those worn by a herd of cows, invisible to me from my perch above the village stream—until the entire scene was drowned out by an overhead plane.”

“We keep a beehive, just the one in our back garden in Flitwick, Bedfordshire. we are about as far from any coast that you can get in the country, to my eternal disappointment. We are in our third year and on our second colony. The first perished in the winter. This one is a swarm that moved into the empty hive. They have been quite productive with honey though, but also producing three swarms of their own. They can also be a bit feisty when working with them! Usually they are hunkered down by this time of year, but with the unseasonable weather and temperatures, the girls are still foraging and returning laden with pollen. Also we are still having regular emergences, indicating that the queen is still actively laying.”

“After 4 hours of walking in the forest, some friends and I reached Cajón del Azul where the ice-cold waters of Azul River have carved deep into the stone over millenia. Although Cajón del Azul is a very popular place for tourists during the summer months, we found a secluded spot to rest and record some audios while we drank some “mates” (a traditional infusion in Argentina). I was impressed by this loud non-stop roar the cascades made and by the fact that this sound probably was, to the local fauna, as permanent as the Andes Mountains themselves. Throughout this 40 min recording you can quite barely hear our voices or the birds’ chirping over the deafening deep roar of the waters.”
