EPON and GPON have had large-scale commercial deployments over the last decade, but many feel their popularity may be waning due to the to the capabilities presented by symmetric 10G EPON and XGS-PON. However, the PON landscape is continuing to evolve as 25G-PON and 50G-PON are already well under development.
