IX: Running Your Own Race with Joan Benoit Samuelson

This is it, folks. The final episode of our limited, and dear Title IX series! This week, we have one of our favorite athletes and mentors on the podcast - Joan Benoit Samuelson. Joan was the winner of the very first women's Olympic Marathon in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Having come into the realm of sport at the exact time of the passing of Title IX, Joan reflects on what that did for her career - and how far we've come. Interviewed by Joan's family friend, Sarah True, the duo discuss what it means to run your own race. Joan pays homage to those women before her that made her win possible and gives us a run-through of that day back in 1984. Finally, she shares what it meant to her to have gained the title of the First Women's Marathon Winner. IX: Fighting Back with Amanda Leve

10 months ago, Amanda Leve shocked the wrestling world with a huge upset win over the seemingly indomitable Gabi Garcia. At 25 years old, Amanda is a professional MMA fighter and considered one of the top grapplers of her generation. This week, Selene Yeager talks to Amanda about her experience as a young woman in sport. While the majority of the women we've had on this series were alive in the years following the inception of Title IX, Amanda gives us her perspective on the ways Title IX has helped/hindered her wrestling career in the modern day.Selene and Amanda discuss the inner workings and nuances of women's wrestling and the sexist beliefs held by many institutions. From fighting against the boys, to being told women's wrestling is too "intimate" to be allowed, Amanda has seen it all. And of course, Selene asks Amanda all about that win against Gabi Garcia.Watch Leve's iconic fight against Gabi Garcia here Join us at Feisty Fest - September 18-20th, 2026: https://feisty.co/events/feisty-fest/Sign up to Receive The Feisty Women's Performance Newsletter:https://feisty.co/newsletters/feisty-womens-performance/Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performanceVisit the Feisty website at https://feisty.co/ for info on all of our events and podcastsSupport our Partners:Momentous: Head to https://www.livemomentous.com/ and use promo code PERFORMANCE for up to 35% off your first orderEternal: Get 15% off services with code FEISTY15 at https://eternal.co/ Wahoo: Use the code FEISTY2026 to get a free Headwind Smart Fan (value $300) with the purchase of a Wahoo KICKR RUN at https://shorturl.at/WVhdr Hettas: Use code STAYFEISTY for 20% off at https://hettas.com/

For a long time, those benefits were only afforded to men. Enter Title IX.This week, Sara Gross interviews Janet Cone - the athletic director at UNC Asheville. Janet has been in this role for over 18 years and has made monumental progress for women's sports by adding both women’s golf and women’s swimming to its NCAA lineup. Sara and Janet discuss the changes that have come over the past 50 years and the effort it took, and continues to take, to create equal opportunities for women and girls in sport.Join us at Feisty Fest - September 18-20th, 2026: https://feisty.co/events/feisty-fest/Sign up to Receive The Feisty Women's Performance Newsletter:https://feisty.co/newsletters/feisty-womens-performance/Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performanceVisit the Feisty website at https://feisty.co/ for info on all of our events and podcastsSupport our Partners:Momentous: Head to https://www.livemomentous.com/ and use promo code PERFORMANCE for up to 35% off your first orderEternal: Get 15% off services with code FEISTY15 at https://eternal.co/ Wahoo: Use the code FEISTY2026 to get a free Headwind Smart Fan (value $300) with the purchase of a Wahoo KICKR RUN at https://shorturl.at/WVhdr Hettas: Use code STAYFEISTY for 20% off at https://hettas.com/

IX: Visualizing the Win with Marianne Martin

Women have been trying to make their way into the Tour de France for a very long time. And even once we did make it, we were pushed out again. This week, Selene interviews Marianne Martin - the winner of the very first female edition of the Tour de France. While the race was not as long as the men's, including only 18 stages and more rest days, it marked a significant milestone for women in cycling, and sport altogether. Marianne tells us what it took to get to that start line, and what it took to win. Turns out, a huge part of it was believing that she could. If there is one thing Marianne thinks got her that win, it was her ability to visualize herself in this race and further, winning this race. At a time when women's imagined possibilities were limited, visualizing that goal changed everything for Marianne. With a new re-model of the Tour de France Femmes starting on July 24th, it's important to recognize the challenges of getting to where we are today and the work that still needs to be done. IX: Turning up the Volume with Joan Cronan

Not to pick favorites, but here at Feisty - this is definitely a favorite. With almost 50 years of experience as an athletic director and inductions into seven different halls of fame, Joan Cronan has A LOT to say about Title IX and gender equity in sport. Graduating college in 1966, Joan was part of intercollegiate sports before women had the federal right to equally compete. This week, our co-host of Girls Gone Gravel, Kathryn Taylor, interviews Joan and asks her about what she calls "her journey."Joan shares the story of her life so far, beginning at the age of twelve when she decided she was going to create change for women in athletics. To do so, in 1972 Joan made a cold call to the president of the College of Charleston and left his office as the women's basketball coach, volleyball coach, tennis coach and overall athletic director. From there, she made innumerable changes to women's athletics that will forever go down in history. If that isn't feisty, what is? IX: Pushing the Limits with Julie Moss

If you had to name one woman that truly showed the outer limits of female athleticism, who would you pick? For us, it's Julie Moss. Best known for her "crawl" in the 1982 Ironman Triathlon, Julie struggled to the finish line only to be beaten by Kathleen McCartney. Her loss on this day made serious headlines. A woman wanting to win THAT badly? Her mental toughness and ability to endure were admired by many. While others felt as though Julie's under-preparedness and desperation might turn Ironman into a "freakshow". This week, Ironwoman's Alyssa Godesky interviews Julie and asks her about how this inaugural race changed her life. While Julie didn't allow sexism to enter her sphere during this time, she does recall the gender inequality in terms of role models and representation. Julie reflects on the way triathlon has changed for women over the years, and where she hopes to see it go in the future. Watch Julie's "crawl" at the 1982 Ironman here! IX: Moving the Spotlight with Dr. Markesha Henderson

There is no denying that Title IX created many new opportunities for women in sport, but what women were excluded from these opportunities? This week, Dr. Shaunna Payne Gold from our Unphased podcast welcomes Dr. Markesha Henderson to discuss the intersection of Title IX, civil rights, and women's rights. Dr. Henderson is the Director of Athletics at Agnes Scott College and brings a unique perspective as one of only 35 black female athletic directors in the NCAA. Shaunna and Dr. Henderson discuss what it takes to have your intercollegiate team flourish, and how having male allies is often necessary. Lisa Bentley never thought she was an athlete...that is UNTIL she won her first Ironman. That's right, her first. Lisa Bentley has been an Ironman Champion 11 times over. And, she has done this all with Cystic Fibrosis - a genetic lung disease that results in severe damage to the lungs and limited lung capacity. IX: Setting Women Free with Bobbi Gibb

Many of us have heard of Kathrine Switzer, but how many of us have heard of Bobbi Gibb? For the second episode of our limited Title IX series, Sara Gross interviews the very first runner of the 1966 Boston Marathon. Bobbi snuck her way into the running crowd by jumping out of the bushes next to the start line wearing a bathing suit and men's board shorts. And she ran FAST! Sara asks Bobbi about her running journey and her passion for female empowerment. At 80 years old, Bobbi reminisces about the restricting stereotypes placed on women in the 50s and how she knew that she had to make a change. After being denied entry to the Boston Marathon by the race director, citing that women were incapable of running this distance, Bobbi ran 40 miles out of anger. It was at this moment that she knew that she had to run the Boston Marathon if only to prove that women could.Join us at Feisty Fest - September 18-20th, 2026: https://feisty.co/events/feisty-fest/Sign up to Receive The Feisty Women's Performance Newsletter:https://feisty.co/newsletters/feisty-womens-performance/Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performanceVisit the Feisty website at https://feisty.co/ for info on all of our events and podcastsSupport our Partners:Momentous: Head to https://www.livemomentous.com/ and use promo code PERFORMANCE for up to 35% off your first orderEternal: Get 15% off services with code FEISTY15 at https://eternal.co/ Wahoo: Use the code FEISTY2026 to get a free Headwind Smart Fan (value $300) with the purchase of a Wahoo KICKR RUN at https://shorturl.at/WVhdr Hettas: Use code STAYFEISTY for 20% off at https://hettas.com/

Ep 19Cindi Miller MS, LCMHCA - Be a Boundary Pusher

For many of us, the feelings of self-doubt, lack of self-compassion, and negative body image are far too familiar. As active, performance-minded women, our social media feeds are filled with women who seem quite literally to be "doing it all". This week, Sara welcomes Cindi Miller to discuss all things self-acceptance. Cindi Miller is a therapist and ex-volleyball coach and division 1 athlete. Ep 18Jennifer Pharr Davis - You Are a Part of Nature

If we are talking about Women's Performance, how does hiking 2190+ miles in less than 47 days sound to you? Jennifer Pharr Davis describes herself as a part of nature. Thru-hiking on 6 different continents, Davis has set multiple fastest times on multi-day trails around the world. This week, Sara welcomes Jennifer to the podcast to discuss the drive and grit it takes to wrestle with your body and mind on these gruelling long-distance thru-hikes. At 21, with an Ironman finish under her belt and a history in high-school athletics, Jennifer decided that hiking the Appalachian trail was the next "step" for her. As Jennifer and Sara discuss, it was on this first thru-hike where she realized that her heart was on the trail - and she made sure to centre the rest of her life around it. Sara and Jennifer get real with one another and discuss the power of grit, determination, and the difference between stopping and quitting. Ep 5Monica Garrison - Changing the Gears of the Cycling Culture

Each week on the Women's Performance Podcast, we discuss the four pillars of performance, which are physiology, nutrition, mental health, and culture, while recognizing that ultimately, we can't separate one from the other.Today, we take this multidisciplinary approach with activist, entrepreneur, Mom, and cyclist, Monica Garrison. As Founder and Executive Director of Black Girls Do Bike, Monica and her team of "Sheroes" have amassed a worldwide organization of 30,000 members with over 100 chapters in the US and, most recently, in London. While it's wildly important to celebrate the fact that she is helping to get black women on bikes and identify as cyclists, it's equally important to recognize how black women are shifting the culture of cycling for the better. Monica and Sara Discuss:Monica's background as a photographer/videographer and how that influences her work with Black Girls Do BikeCrafting the imagery of BGDBHow they motivate their childrenThe impetus for starting BGDBThe initial response from the industry when she started BGDBWhy it is important to have a space for Women of ColorIssues or stereotypes of black women that most don't seeThe valuable assets black women bring to the cycling culture and industryViewing herself as a serial entrepreneur - even with some failuresHow she finds sponsors and supporters for BGDBPersonal cycling or fitness goalsPressures she feels as the leader of this growing organizationHer vision of BGDB over the next several yearsAdvice for those of us who are trying to shift the culture and create a more inclusive spaceWe must continue to create spaces for underrepresented groups and, with people like Monica, we see a beautiful representation and the power of being that change. Ep 1Every Woman Deserves Performance

Every woman deserves performance. We have observed that there is A LOT of B.S. information out there for women coming from the fitness and health industries, which gets even worse as we age. Because of this, we saw the need to bring trusted information to women so we can feel and perform our best. The launch of the Women's Performance Podcast features host, Sara Gross, with three change-makers, movers, and shakers in the women's performance space - Dr. Stacy Sims, Selene Yeager, and Jamila Gale-Agans.They discuss multiple topics around performance and dive deep in order to provide solid information and access to resources for active women, coaches, parents, race directors, and companies.Stacy Sims provides perspective on the biggest changes in her field of research, and what new directions she is seeing that will help women.Selene discusses changes she has seen in the fitness industry and media, and how she vets information when working on an article or looking for a guest on the "Hit Play Not Pause" podcastJamila paints a picture of her time as a US Army Officer and the cultural assumptions she had to navigate in this "culture within a culture."They also provided valuable roundtable insight on questions from both Sara and the live audience, including:What does it mean for you to focus on performance in your life? And, how has it changed through the years? What does it mean to continue to focus on performance as we age?How do history and culture affect our work, research, and performance? Why is it important to look at performance through a variety of lenses? What's the best advice you've received as a performance-minded individual? How do you make strength training fun?How do I know if I need a rest day, or if I'm just being lazy? (spoiler alert: you're NOT lazy)Do you train according to your cycles? What is your advice on recovery? This is our time to learn, grow, and thrive. It’s not about standing on a podium (although some of us will); it’s about being able to do the things we love throughout our life.Episode ResourcesRegister for the Women's Performance Summit & use coupon code EARLYBIRD50 by February 4th for $50 off the Annual PassSubscribe and Follow the Feisty Women's Performance PodcastWe are now accepting proposals to speak at the Women's Performance Summit. We currently have four pillars of presentations and topics: Physiology, Nutrition, Psychology and Mental Health, and Social/Cultural.
