36: "Amplifying Black Voices" Week
EFirst and foremost, Black lives matter. This has always been the case but it took us until now to post it here and we will do better. At Earbuds we work hard to ensure that our newsletter is filled with podcast recommendations that include episodes produced and hosted by women and POC. The newsletter is curated by a different person each week, who sends us their theme and 5 podcast episode links. If we find that the list contains all white men, we reply asking for a more diverse selection. Sometimes, we fall short. Sometimes curators don't reply and we give up. We won't do that anymore. We’re holding ourselves accountable and you can, too. As a white woman, I am reading, listening, and donating to funds and organizations that center and support black lives and work to fight racism. And I'm learning a lot. I will continue to do so. It's on all of us to see to it that real change comes from this movement. -Arielle NissenblattWelcome to episode 36. Here's the description: In August of 1619, a ship carrying more than 20 enslaved Africans arrived in the English colony of Virginia. America was not yet America, but this was the moment it began. No aspect of the country that would be formed here has been untouched by the 250 years of slavery that followed. Since we so rarely hear nuances or complexities about the region, my hope is that the podcast medium creates an opportunity for people who wouldn't otherwise be exposed to these stories to sit, listen, think, and allow for those gray areasMONDAY: See Something Say Something - Taking the Numb Out of Numbers - 40 minutesTUESDAY: Kerning Cultures - Not Just My Hijab (Part I) - 22 minutesWEDNESDAY: Man Up - Why Can't My Wife and I Pray Together - 31 minutesTHURSDAY: Al Empire - Hamed Sinno: Mashrou’ Leila Singer/Songwriter - 44 minutesFRIDAY: Jasadi - أول مرة (My Body: First Time) - 21 minutesNB from Miriam: This episode is in Arabic. I chose to include it -- and hope there are some Arabic-speakers on this list -- because I believe representation and inclusion matter. The episode itself features a few Arab women talking about their first times hearing about and experiencing the concept of sex, something considered haram (shameful) in many Arab communities. Since sex is so rarely discussed in the Arabic-speaking countries of the Middle East and North Africa, it was important for me to include it in this week's curation. All of these episode recommendations are available on Podchaser, Castbox, and wherever else you get your podcasts!Want to sponsor one of our upcoming episodes? I love reading application essays, so hit me up!Here's Miriam's CROWDSOURCING QUESTION: Reflect on your podcast queue: is it mainly voices and stories that are familiar to you? Stories that you might hear in your circles already? Or, is it a mix of voices that aren't otherwise represented in your non-podcast life? Gabe Fleisher, who began his political journalism career in the third grade, says the show promises to "deconstruct the mechanics undergirding American politics, providing a foundation for listeners to better understand complicated issues like gerrymandering, right in time for the Iowa caucuses." In a company blog post, VP and head of global advertising business Jay Richman said that the service is "taking formats that traditionally have been more of a static experience and making it a more personalized and attractive one." That said, in a story for The Verge, Ashley Carman explains that while Spotify's new technology breaks ground in the industry, it also puts consumer privacy at risk. "Podcasts are sensitive listening data — the topics can be niche and revealing — so users rightly might have privacy concerns about how what they consume will be siphoned back to brands," says Carman. When Richman was asked about these issues, he responded that consumers can opt-out of data targeting. If you want more information on this topic, head to the Snacks Daily podcast. Hosts Nick and Jack share some more information about how strategic ad insertion will appear in your listening experience.Mermaid Palace, Kaitlin Prest's new production house, is bringing The Heart back to the podcast airwaves in partnership with Radiotopia. In its inaugural installment, Prest "explores a friendship, an 'artnership,' and an idea of what would happen if two radical young women took their politics to their most extreme conclusion." The first episode drops on Jan. 15. Gimlet Media's podcast about Black culture, The Nod, is ending. Hosts Eric Eddings and Brittany Luse announced the news in their most recent episode. However, starting in April we'll be able to watch the show (which will move to a daily cadence) via the new Quibi video service.
