Bismillah, walhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ala rasool Allah ﷺ, my brothers and sisters, alhamdulillah, Allah ﷻ has chosen to give us Ramadan al-Kareem. Let us make the most of this beautiful month. Let us make this month into a month of khair and barakah for all of us. I ask Allah ﷻ to help us build relationships and become people of this ummah who join with each other.
In Ramadan is a month of forgiveness and seeking forgiveness. We understand this where Rasool Allah ﷺ asked us to beg Allah ﷻ for His forgiveness. Allah ﷻ said, Nabi ﷺ said in the hadith in Tirmidhi, narrated by Anas bin Malik r.a., that Rasool Allah ﷺ said: “Allah ﷻ said” (hadith-e-Qudsi): *“O son of Adam, I forgive you if you worship Me alone, don’t make shirk, and hope for My forgiveness. Whatever sins you have committed, I will forgive all of them. O son of Adam, I do not care if your sins reach the height of the heavens, and then you seek forgiveness—I will forgive you. O son of Adam, if you come to Me with an earth full of sins, an earth load of sins, and meet Me associating nothing with Me, I will match it with an earth load of forgiveness.”* Please understand—be very clear in our minds. Number one: I will forgive you. The number one condition is we do not make shirk. Don’t join anybody with Allah, because Allah is not joined with anybody. And then seek forgiveness, because forgiveness is something from which taqwa begins. Forgiveness is the tahara of the heart. So we ask Allah ﷻ to forgive us.
And remember, I remind myself and you: when you seek forgiveness, tawbah comes with it. Istighfar is to seek forgiveness; tawbah is to turn toward Allah ﷻ. Two go hand in hand. We cannot say, “O Allah, forgive me for this,” and then continue with that sin. “O Allah, forgive me for ghibah” and we continue with ghibah. Our whole social life is based on ghibah. “O Allah, forgive me for slander” and I still continue to slander. “O Allah, forgive me for lying” and I’m still lying and cheating. “O Allah, forgive me for this and that”—when you say, “forgive me,” it means you are going to stop doing that thing. Otherwise, the forgiveness has no sincerity in it.
So please let us sincerely beg Allah ﷻ to forgive us for all our sins, and then make dua—Allah ﷻ will accept your dua. InshaAllah, we ask Allah to accept our dua. But seek forgiveness, make istighfar, and follow that istighfar with amal. The istighfar with the amal, InshaAllah, leads to success. We ask Allah ﷻ to make us those whose dua will not be rejected. And may the blessings of Allah be upon the noble Prophet ﷺ and his family and the companions. By the mercy of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
