S4 Ep 48When Doing the Right Thing Wasn’t Enough: Tia Nelson’s Journey to Authentic Faith
What happens when faith feels more like doing the right things than truly knowing God? In this episode of the Faith Conversations Podcast, Jessica Cabrera talks with Tia Nelson about growing up with faith, questioning whether religious activity was enough, and eventually discovering a deeper relationship with Jesus. Raised in small-town South Carolina, Tia was introduced to faith early through conversations with her grandfather and chose to be baptized at six years old. But as she grew older, she began to wrestle with whether faith was meant to be more than following rules and staying busy with the right activities. Her search for deeper understanding led her to Scripture, Christian authors like John Piper, and Christian involvement at Clemson University. A turning point came during six months in Australia, where she encountered a bold example of authentic faith that helped her see faith not as performance, but as relationship. Later, while living in Washington, D.C., personal trauma and distance from Christian community left her questioning her identity and place in church. Yet even there, God was still pursuing her. Through the love of a small group community, Tia experienced healing, repentance, and freedom through understanding her identity in Christ. Her story is a reminder that faith is not about perfection or performance—it is about knowing and trusting a God who continues to pursue us. In this episode of Faith Conversations, host Jessica Cabrera interviews Deborah White about growing up without a Christian foundation, wrestling with performance-based faith, and discovering the life-changing truth that God’s love cannot be earned. After losing her father at age ten, Deborah struggled with grief and identity. Though she attended church and repeatedly rededicated her life, she believed she had to perform to earn Christ’s love. It took years for her to truly understand that Jesus could not love her any more than He already did.During a difficult season in her marriage, a pastor reminded her that even if her marriage fell apart, God would never abandon her. Through community and faith, God restored her marriage and deepened her trust in Him.In the summer of 2021, while interviewing vulnerable children, Deborah cried out to God for Him to act. God responded by calling her to be the answer. This led her to advocate for children on Capitol Hill and witness miracles that reminded her we serve a limitless God.Deborah’s story encourages listeners not to give up — because God redeems pain and shows His power through our weakness. S4 Ep 44How Do You Respond to God?
bonusWhat do you do when God speaks—but what He asks feels uncomfortable, vulnerable, or even frightening? In this honest and deeply personal solo episode, Jessica Cabrera builds on last week’s conversation about how God communicates and turns the focus to a more challenging question: How do we respond to God’s voice?Drawing from Acts 8 and 9, Jessica reflects on the dramatic conversion of the Apostle Paul and the courageous obedience of Ananias. When God asked Ananias to go to Saul—a man known for persecuting Christians—it didn’t make sense. It was risky. It was scary. But Ananias obeyed.Jessica shares her own journey of resistance and surrender. From hesitating to host the podcast, to stepping into public-facing ministry, to speaking in her hometown and branding the ministry with her name—each step required trust and courage. Each step required responding faithfully when God prompted her forward. This episode explores what it means to trust God when obedience feels costly, and why responding to Him with faith writes a better story than anything we could create on our own. S3 Ep 39Living for More Than Yourself: Matt Sims’ Journey of Faith
What happens when you realize the life you’re living isn’t the life you were made for? In this episode of Faith Conversations, Matt Sims, Pastor of Kids Ministry at Burke Community Church, shares his powerful journey of drifting from faith, searching for meaning, and ultimately discovering a life fully surrendered to Jesus. Growing up in the UK, Matt was deeply involved in the Salvation Army church. But during his teenage and college years, he walked away, choosing to live life on his own terms—only to find himself, in his own words, “a full-blown mess.” As he searched for something more, Matt traveled to the United States to serve as a summer camp counselor, where he encountered Christian fellowship unlike anything he had experienced before. It was through listening to children share stories of broken homes and absent parents that God got Matt’s attention in a profound way. Faced with the realization that his own future children could one day tell a similar story, Matt made the decision at 22 years old to place his faith and trust in Jesus—not just in belief, but in how he lived his life. Matt’s journey wasn’t instant or easy. From years of ministry with the Salvation Army, to unexpected job loss, seminary, driving for Uber, and wrestling with God’s direction, Matt learned what it means to live not for himself, but for God. Today, he serves in kids ministry—his true calling—helping children discover biblical truth, grow in their understanding of Jesus, and walk confidently in their faith. S3 Ep 35Just One Step: Greg Triplett's Story of Growing Through Daily Surrender
Greg Triplett, Pastor of Communications at Burke Community Church, shares his faith journey in this episode of the Faith Conversations Podcast. Raised in a home where faith was not just professed but practiced, Greg witnessed his parents’ trust in God through all circumstances. This solid foundation laid the groundwork for his own walk with Christ. As a college student participating in and leading student ministry, Greg began to share the gospel and mentor others in their faith. It was in these moments—where he felt in over his head and had to rely completely on God—that he experienced the deepest growth in his relationship with Jesus. Sharing his faith became the space where trust, surrender, and awe of God were formed. Greg reflects on the beautiful mystery of God: all-powerful and deeply personal. He encourages listeners to recognize how God meets us in every season—in the chaos of daily life, in our marriages, our parenting, and our work. Faith is not just formed on the mountaintop but in everyday surrender. It just takes one step—the next step—to grow in relationship with a God who is far greater than we can imagine. Bible Verses Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Romans 10:14 – How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? Isaiah 6: 5,8 - “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” ...Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” Matthew 28:19-20 – Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. 2 Corinthians 12:9 – But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. Psalm 145:3 – Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. New to the Bible? Read the Gospel of John. Check out the list Greg mentions in the episode! S3 Ep 31Three Generations Changed by Grace: Pastor Michael Coffey’s Journey from Resistance to Surrender
In this powerful kickoff to Season Three of the Faith Conversations Podcast, host Jessica Cabrera welcomes Dr. Michael Coffey, Executive Pastor of Burke Community Church in Northern Virginia. Together, they unpack a legacy of transformation as Dr. Coffey shares how three generations of men in his family encountered radical change through the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Growing up in a home marked by alcoholism and abuse, Pastor Coffey witnessed firsthand the life-altering shift that occurred when his father surrendered to Jesus. Yet even with this transformation around him, Pastor Coffey resisted faith—choosing instead to control his own path. But when his grandmother experienced miraculous healing, it jolted him awake and launched a personal pursuit to investigate the claims of Jesus. Through reading the Bible, especially the first four books of the New Testament (the Gospels), he discovered that Jesus truly is the way, the truth, and the life. That truth not only changed his heart, it set him on a course to serve others through campus ministry, international missions, military chaplaincy, and now pastoral leadership. This episode is an inspiring testament to how God patiently pursues us—even in our resistance—and invites us into a story of surrender, healing, and purpose. Bible Verses 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come…” John 14:6 – “I am the way and the truth and the life…” Jeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Romans 5:8 – “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Do you want a relationship with God too? Now grounded in a Christ-centered marriage, Ash shares how her faith has carried her through overwhelming trials: the stillbirth of a child, a brain tumor that led to brain surgery, and walking alongside her husband through stage 4 cancer. Through daily time in Scripture, her Christian community, and a personal relationship with Christ, Ash discovered a peace that truly surpasses understanding. Her story is a powerful testimony of God’s fatherly love, His mercy in brokenness, and the deep joy found in true surrender. Ep 14Special Edition: Jessica's Journey of Surrender, Trust, and Transformation
bonusWhat happens when God calls you out of your comfort zone—again and again? In this special solo episode, host Jessica Cabrera shares her powerful personal testimony, from her first encounter with God as a teenager to a lifetime of unexpected relocations and divine redirection. Jessica opens up about how God called her to surrender, how He pursued her gently but persistently, and how trusting Him—even in confusion and resistance—led to a life she never could have planned on her own. This episode is full of honest reflection, spiritual insight, and awe-inspiring moments of God’s orchestration. If you've ever wondered whether God is really speaking to you—or struggled to trust Him when His ways don't make sense—this episode is for you. Listen now and be encouraged to courageously follow Him—because His way is better. Want to dig deeper? The Personal Call to Faith Jessica’s initial faith journey began at age 14 with a deep, unexplainable conviction to seek God. Jeremiah 29:13 – "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Surrendering Control to God Jessica describes the internal tug-of-war as God called her to surrender her will. Proverbs 3:5–6 – "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths" Hearing God’s Voice and Promptings God communicates through the Spirit, people, Scripture, and circumstances. John 10:27 – "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." Faith in Things Unseen and God’s Sovereign Orchestration From Chile to Dallas, South Carolina, and back again, God’s hand is evident in every detail. Romans 8:24-28 – "For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Courage to Obey Without Full Understanding Following God’s call even when it doesn’t make sense leads to joy, peace, and purpose. Hebrews 11:1 – "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Do you want a relationship with God too?
