Arthur's Seat is the ancient, extinct volcano that lies just a mile to the east of Edinburgh Castle. Myths cling to its peak like mist in the autumn, but one particular mystery is far from ancient. In 1836, some boys hunting rabbits on the hill found a strange hoard of miniature coffins hidden in a small cave. Each held a rudimentary figure, clad in fabric, its eyes open as it stared across the ages. Who did the figures represent? Why were they put there? For some among you, Vulcan conjures mental images of Star Trek, with the name being that of the planet Spock calls home. For others, you'll know Vulcan as the Roman god of fire, volcanoes, and blacksmiths. That's the incarnation of Vulcan we'll be looking at in this article. He's the equivalent of the Greek Hephaestus. His worship dates at least to the 8th century BCE, as far as records go, when the Romans built him a shrine. He was an important god for the Romans, and like Silvanus and Juno, he was also important to ordinary people - not just the Roman state. Depending on who you ask, Juno is either a NASA space probe studying Jupiter, or she's the Roman queen of the gods, wife of Jupiter, god of thunder. As the Roman counterpart of Hera, the wife of Zeus in Greek mythology, she's often characterised as a jealous, bitter, and vindictive wife, often punishing the nymphs or goddesses with whom Jupiter had various dalliances. That said, she does have some additional qualities that come with her absorption by the Roman state. These make Juno a much more interesting figure within Roman religion and daily life. For the unwary visitor to their lair, redcaps can be deeply dangerous creatures. These malevolent little folk are classified ‘goblins’ and that’s a word that’s rarely attached to anything positive. While they do appear in northern European folklore, they’re most often found in Border folklore. In many ways, it’s hardly surprising. The Border region is a particularly blood-soaked part of the British Isles. The land was contested for centuries, though the redcaps appear in the castles in southern Scotland rather than northern England. According to Sir Walter Scott, “Redcap is a popular appelation of that class of spirits which haunt old castles. Church bells appear in a range of ways within folklore. Sometimes they continue to ring far beneath the waves in a church under the sea. Or perhaps their peeling in the darkness guided a lost traveller back to the path and away from danger. In some tales, they’re stolen by the Devil, or by mermaids. Other times, they’re stolen by people. That’s the case in Northumbrian folklore, in which the Brinkburn Bells now ring in Durham Cathedral. That lies some 37 miles to the south of the original priory. Or do they? As with any legends, other versions exist that place the lost church bells in the nearby river Coquet. Perhaps the water carries the ringing of bells as it winds its way through Northumberland. Either way, several tales of the Brinkburn Bells resound through local folklore. You might not expect to see northern vampires among the tales of Northumberland, the Borders and Cumbria. But they're there! William de Newburgh included three stories of revenants at Berwick, Melrose and Alnwick in his Historia rerum Anglicarum, a collection of five volumes that told a history of England from 1066 to 1198. Tales of fairies exist all over the world, and there are hundreds to choose from right here in the British Isles. Yet they often have a particular 'flavour' or motif that lets you group them together. One of the common motifs of folk tales in the northeast of England is that of dancing fairies. It seems the fairies in these parts loved a good feast, or a sing-song after dark. Many of the stories are benign, with fairies simply enjoying a good knees-up and largely leaving human witnesses alone. Others see the fairies try to invite humans to join them - many of whom are never seen again. Most people at some point will have experienced the pain of a nettle sting. I once managed to fall hands-first from a fence into a whole patch of nettles. So it's hardly surprising that people consider them unwanted or unloved plants. The stinging nettle, or common nettle (Urtica dioica) is Europe's most common nettle. Other names for the plant include burning weed, fire weed, and burning nettle. It's (surprisingly) edible, and has a wealth of medicinal and magical lore in its spiky back pocket. Plants often become unwanted plants when they're especially prolific. Celandine is one such plant, quickly spreading to fill an area with its glossy green leaves and dizzyingly bright yellow flowers. But celandine is also a confusing plant, since the two varieties with the same name are not related. The greater celandine Chelidonium majus is a member of the poppy family, while the lesser celandine Ranunculus ficaria is in the buttercup family. According to the Venerable Bede, what we call February was called Sol-Monath by the ancient Britons. This translates to 'Month of Cakes' and the people gave cakes to the gods as offerings. I don't know about you, but that's a practice I could get behind. It's worth bearing in mind that what we think of as 'cake' is not what people of earlier centuries had in mind. Often, early 'cake' was more like bread. The type of cake we eat now first emerges in its original form in the mid-17th century. Yet that doesn't stop cake from accruing a whole range of folklore, helping people to ward off witches, find love, and celebrate important occasions. Shapeshifting is an ancient ability that appears in cultures around the world across a vast period of time. It appears in an array of 'types' of shapeshifting. Tunnels seem to accrue more folklore than most. Perhaps it's because we can't see where they go when we can only see the entrance.
