Ep 364364: Visiting Schmigadoon!

AppleTV+'s newest musical series, Schmigadoon!, strands a couple of contemporary big-city doctors in a strange town lost in time, requiring them to find their true loves before they can cross the bridge home. Did we true-love it, or did we feel trapped? New guest Sean Pflueger joins us to talk about it! Around The Dial takes us through American Horror Stories, Never Have I Ever, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Love, Victor, and Dr. Death. Don (on behalf of the @EHGAssist crew) uses his Extra Credit segment to let us give a TV character a late-night cable access show. Tara explains why she's not a crackpot for thinking the Marvel shows on Disney+ are just very expensive advertainment. Sean pitches Schitt's Creek's "Open Mic" for induction into the Canon. Then, after naming the week's Winner and Loser, it's on to a Game Time with perfect pitch. Ep 363363: Should You Slide Into The New Gossip Girl's DMs?

Nadia Chaudhury of Eater Austin joins us for the first time to talk about the second time around for Gossip Girl. Does the 2021 reboot know who it's for? Did the original benefit from the suspense surrounding Gossip Girl's identity? And will we keep watching even if Tavi Gevinson's acting doesn't improve? After Gordon Lightfoot Cole dropped in to make a request, we went Around The Dial with White Lotus, Monsters At Work, We Are Lady Parts, Heist, and This Is Pop before listener Lauren pitched an ICO (initial Canon offering) for a third-season Halt And Catch Fire episode. Kiefer won (the presidency), a Netflix show lost, and we cast about for answers in Game Time. Ep 362362: America's-Birthday Forcenings!

It's a holiday week: time for a good old-fashioned Forcening, in which each of your EHG regulars makes another one watch a TV episode or movie. This time, we're acknowledging July 4th by obliging one another to watch shows with "America" in the title, and Tara's first up, forcing Sarah to watch 2000's short-lived, extremely derivative, stupidly enjoyable Young Americans, a Dawson's Creek spin-off featuring references to Stephen King, Dead Poets Society, The Skulls, and kindling. ...Wait, that last thing was actually Kate Bosworth. Next, Sarah forced Dave to watch a third-season episode of cocaine fever-dream The Greatest American Hero -- a great theme song in search of half-decent CGI, a team of writers who would stay for the whole episode, and better costume strat. Finally, Dave made Tara take The American Bible Challenge, and we all learned that there's more than one Herod, it's hard to flip a fork, and Jeff Foxworthy might be America's Host. Praise God -- it's an all-new Extra Hot Great!TOPICSLead Topic: 🧒 Young Americans S01.E01: PilotLead Topic: 🦸🏻‍♂️ The Greatest American Hero S03.E08: Space RangerLead Topic: 📖 The American Bible Challenge S03.E09: Grand FinaleNOTES🗒 Full episode notes can be found on the episode 362 page on ExtraHotGreat.com🧒 Young Americans on Dailymotion🦸🏻‍♂️ The Greatest American Hero on Peacock📖 And The American Bible Challenge on Netflix

Ep 361361: Should You Join The Mysterious Benedict Society?

Disney Plus's latest series for teens and tweens is the very puzzle-y The Mysterious Benedict Society, based on a beloved novel, and Leigh-Ann Jackson is here to talk about how well it works! Around The Dial takes us through In Treatment, The Good Fight, Jiva!, Flack, the (sort of) final season of B-B-B-B-Bosch, CSI, and Derry Girls! Craig and Courtney argue for the Canon induction of the King Of The Hill episode "The Wedding Of Bobby Hill." Then after naming the week's Winner and Loser, we kick off a new Game Time season with a contest that may be something, or may be nothing. Ep 360360: Bouncing Into Physical

The latest new series from AppleTV+ is Physical, starring Rose Byrne as an aerobics addict in 1981 San Diego; Jeb Lund joins us to discuss whether the first three episodes left us wanting more, or...wanting more of GLOW (R.I.P.). Around The Dial takes us through Cruel Summer, Holey Moley, Exterminate All The Brutes, American Barbecue Showdown, the I'll Be Gone In The Dark special, and Epstein's Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell. Tara and Sarah share a Tiny Triumph (thanks, Slate!), and Shan takes to Extra Credit to have us gender-swap TV detectives. Jeb makes his case for the Rick & Morty episode "The Ricklantis Mixup" to be inducted into the Canon. Ep 359359: Is Loki A Good Time?

Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair is back to talk about the latest product off the Marvel industrial complex assembly line: Disney+'s Loki. We discussed everything from Religion 101 to DB Cooper to mid-century production design to canonical gender identity -- but should you make TIME (...sorry) for the show? Then we went Around The Dial with Younger, Starstruck, Bargain Block, Crime Scene Kitchen, The Housewife and the Hustler, and a weird movie on HBO Max, and then it got REALLY weird when we all sent in the clowns for David Ellis Dickerson's Extra Credit. Richard signed our yearbooks "I hope this overlooked-classic Simpsons episode stays sweet" in his Canon presentation; Farrow won and Toobin (and pooin') lost; and a role-playing Game Time had us all wondering if we'd (IMD)be crowning a season winner. Ep 358358: Getting A Taste Of Sweet Tooth

Netflix joins Amazon in boldly dropping a soft sci-fi story about an extremely contagious disease outbreak mid-covid pandemic...but at least Sweet Tooth, unlike Utopia, also has as its lead character a very cute little deer boy? New guest Santiago Melli-Huber joins us to talk about it. Around The Dial takes us to the premiere of We Are Lady Parts on Peacock, the finale of Pose on FX; then to AMC's Kevin Can F**k Himself; to Sarah's summer TV preview pick Mike Tyson: The Knockout (and related 30 For 30 episodes about Mike Tyson that might work better); and to The Boy In The Plastic Bubble, which we recently screened, watch-along style, with our high-pledge Patreon supporters (stay tuned for more details on future hangouts!). GuyIsDelightful challenges us to create TV news-based scripted series that actually feature and are about real news shows. Santiago makes his case for the Nonac induction of RuPaul's Drag Race's Season 12 episode "World's Worst." Finally, we name the week's Winner and Loser, and wrap up with a toes-up Game Time. Ep 357357: Securing Crime Scene Kitchen, Investing In Small Fortune

Writer and co-host of The Nod Brittany Luse joins us for a double shot of summer TV fare, starting with NBC's well-hosted but incorrectly constructed Small Fortune. We like the dioramas; we're not sure about the durability of the games (or future guests). Then we ducked under the yellow tape to look at FOX's Crime Scene Kitchen, which isn't as bad as Sarah expected, but also isn't as good as it could be. Will any of us keep watching either of these? Is Curtis Stone the Joel Kinnaman of celebrity chefs? And did we actually invoke Quibi...favorably? Next we went Around The Dial with the Friends reunion, Legendary, Married At First Sight, Love After Lockup (instead of Who Killed Little Grégory?, but watch 'em both!), and Bad Batch. Kimberly hoped her Derry Girls Canon submission would have the luck of the Irish before Firefly Lane won and Alec Baldwin lost (...twice), and then we transitioned between scenes with a few bars of Game Time. Ep 356356: Diving Into The 2021 Summer TV Preview

With summer nearly upon us, we're dusting off a format we haven't done in a while, looking at the premieres that are coming in the weeks and months ahead and each choosing one title we're into; one we SHOULD be into but aren't; and one NO ONE should be into. Joining us for this very important work is longtime listener, first-time guest Stacy Lambe! After we all offer our summer picks (and un-picks), we consider Dave In Chicago's Extra Credit question and answer which TV side character deserves their own Kevin Can F--- Himself-type star vehicle. We also play a notable scene from the Netflix original movie Stowaway and discuss whether it's Worse Than Jazz. Next, we debate whether Daria's "Dye! Dye! Ep 354354: Girls5Eva Passes The Audition

Slate TV critic Willa Paskin is back to talk about Peacock's girl-group-comeback addition to the Tina Fey-verse, Girls5Eva. Did the panel's opinions on the show's quality harmonize? Is the bubblegum/TRL world of 20 years ago a familiar song? Does the thin writing of Busy Philipps's character hit a bum note? Has Sarah already started blaming that Wonder Woman piano for various clumsy incidents around her own home? You know the answer to that last one; you'll have to listen to learn the rest. We went Around The Dial with The Handmaid's Tale, The Big Shot With Bethenny Frankel, The Great Pottery Throw Down, and The Great British Sewing Bee before deciding whether Dave is NOT a crackpot for wanting to outlaw this-season-on montages. Later, we heard a dreamy Canon presentation for Bluey. Actors won, the Globes lost, and David T. Cole played us some variations on a ('90s TV) theme during a disconcerting Game Time. A while back, we put out a call for six-word pitches to program a whole episode of this podcast, and our listener Heather was the victor with "Nice British People Doing Nice Things." As a result, she has slotted in (virtually) every show you will hear us talk about in this episode, for which we are joined by returning guest Alex Collins! First, we all tuck in on the pop history series Back In Time For Dinner. Then Around The Dial takes us to France for Escape To The Chateau, Newfoundland and Kenya for Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond The Lobby, Wales for Escape To The Country, and a British mail route for Postman Pat. As required by Heather, Tara presents the Corner Gas episode "Happy Campers" for induction into The Canon. Then after naming the Winner and Loser of the year 1992, we go knocking on Game Time's door. Ep 352352: Zooming In On The Reality Show Exposure

Jessica Liese is here to talk about a brand-new, brand-content competition reality show from Hulu -- Exposure, in which professional photographers compete in irrelevant-to-their-strengths "influencer" challenges while rookie hosts Cole Walliser and Cat Jimenez make terrible photo puns. The problem isn't so much the Samsung-fluffing; it's that the show isn't process-y enough, isn't transparent about how the challenges work, and isn't made by the same people who make Bake Off and could figure out how to turn an hour-long commercial for phone cameras into something informative with clear stakes. We were relieved to FOCUS (...sorry) on other topics in Around The Dial, including MAFS: Unmatchables, a ranking of MAFS: Mothership couples, Offspring, Top Chef, and 9-1-1: Lone Star. Ep 346346: Is Waffles + Mochi The Cream Of The Crop?

We're thrilled the third time was the charm for our guest Alison Herman, as we all dug into the pro-cooking kids' show from the Obama-tainment industrial complex, Waffles + Mochi. We talked about "variety" shows for children, whether Mrs. Obama is as stiff as Mochi is adorable, and supplemental tomato facts before going Around The Dial with Step Up: High Water, kid 90, Allen vs. Farrow, Greek, Last Chance U: Basketball, and famous original 9-1-1. Ep 345345: Moving Back Into The Loft For The Real World Homecoming: New York

As part of the relaunch of CBS All Access as Paramount Plus, the original Season 1 cast of The Real World has reunited in their old Soho loft for a limited series, so we got back together with our former Real World recapper Kim Reed to discuss the series premiere! Also on the Paramount Plus tip, Tara also has to stress that she is not a crackpot for being irate that Oprah's interview with Harry and Meghan is somehow not on it. Around The Dial takes us through Good Girls, an update on Married At First Sight, the WandaVision finale, a Cop Rock tie-in on Last Week Tonight, and the midseason finale of 9-1-1: Lone Star. Lauren uses her Extra Credit to make us assemble a group of TV friends we would want to hang out with -- and who we think would enjoy hanging out with each other; then Sean makes the case for the Nonac induction of ER's Season 4 travelogue "Fathers And Sons." Finally, we crown the week's Winner and Loser, and close up with a Game Time as sticky as it is speedy. Brandon is back to talk about last weekend's Brutal Bridesmaids and its strange lack of bloodshed, plus ugly bridal fashion, an emergency male-stripper substitution, and realistic wedding-party cliques. We went Around The Dial with Close Enough, Punky Brewster's reboot, Search Party, Murder Among The Mormons, and Dave's 911 Lone Star report before re-imagining legendary episodes of TV as Lifetime movies in an Extra Credit from David Ellis Dickerson. We dug into a classic episode of The Mole for Canon Consideration, then declared the GLOW team winners and Joss Whedon a huge loser before heading to the DC-verse for Game Time. After illness prevented her from making her earlier booking, LaToya Ferguson has returned to talk about another show she feels passionate about: The CW's Superman & Lois! Is she all in on this latest iteration of the Man of Steel and his family? Listen and find out! Around The Dial takes us through It's A Sin, Cherries Wild, In & Of Itself, the full-throated endorsement of Firefly Lane that circumstances ROBBED LaToya of the chance to deliver earlier this month, and a report on a particularly bonkers episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star. Francoise uses her Extra Credit to ask us to share any TV-related resolutions we've made for 2021 (look, we're close to the Lunar New Year); then it's on to Tara's Canon presentation on Saved By The Bell (2020) S01.E07: "House Party." Fametracker's own Adam Sternbergh (oh, also the New York Times's but whatever)(hee) is back to discuss The Equalizer, the perfectly acceptable re-imagining of the '80s classic. Whom on the panel did the new verzh win over with casting coups, origami tradecraft, and similarities to Leverage and Blindspot? Who called it the three-camera sitcom of cop shows? And is anyone setting their DVR to watch more of it? We went Around The Dial with Framing Britney Spears, Married At First Sight, GBBO, Big Family Cooking Showdown, and Crime Scene: The Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel before finding ways to Defund The Police Shows in an Extra Credit from Francoise. Ep 339339: A Bridge & Tunnel Too Far

Our esteemed colleague, "Pot Ledom"-ologist, and Long Island native Dan Rogge returns to analyze Edward Burns's thoroughly mediocre Bridge & Tunnel, about the post-college lives and loves of six suspiciously hot high-school friends...none of whom can seem to master the accent. A huge music budget (and equally large commitment to the sex scenes) can't make up for stilted dialogue, anachronistic argot, and Burns's Lena Dunham-esque estrangement from the real-world problems of his characters. We went Around The Dial with Perfect Life, Walker, an America's Next Top Model book, Everwood, and 9-1-1 Lone Star before contemplating our ideal 2024 presidential tickets in an Extra Credit, and then Dan proposed burning down Riverdale's fourth-season musical episode "Wicked Little Town" in his Nonac presentation. Ep 337337: Big Dickinson Energy

The regular panelists had to forge ahead without esteemed colleague Kathryn VanArendonk in our discussion of Dickinson's second season; that's the bad news. The good news is, we all like Apple TV's imagining of poet Emily Dickinson's life and loves with lots of swearing and twenty-first-century slang. How DOES the show balance the demands of historical fact with flights of fancy, and not take itself too seriously? And are Season 2's creepy [character spoiler redacted] the key to its success? Later, we went Around The Dial with The Masked Dancer, Everything Is Going Great, Cheers Season 5, Mr. Mayor's debut, and Lupin and other "Pringle mysteries." First-time guest Kamille joins us for a conversation about Tiny Pretty Things, Netflix's new Center Stage-with-teens ballet thriller (?), and while she watched the whole thing, neither she nor the fulltime panel thinks it's good. But aside from the wretched VO, suspect acting, unwelcome parallels to 13 Reasons Why and decided un-Frenchness of cartoon villain Lauren Holly, is TPT a good time-waster? Not to worry: we found you some definite time-wasters when we went Around The Dial with The Wilds and 12 Dates Of Christmas, panned Deliciousness, and helped you cut down that HBO-documentary backlog with a watch-skip index of recent prestige true crime. Ep 331331: War Is Hell: An All-Canon Episode

The panel is contemplating three user submissions for the Canon this week, starting with the extremely highly rated, extreeeeemely looooong series finale of MASH. Lindy makes a fascinating parallel between [waves hands vaguely] All This and the world MASH portrayed, but is the episode's status as a historical reference enough to earn it a medal of honor? Next, we're sampling a first-season Strangers With Candy episode submitted by Tim (and the second in which a chicken figures heavily). Does Amy Sedaris's satirical take on The Best Little Girl In The World -- and a solid comedic turn from one Ellen Pompeo -- have what we'd call a debater's body? Finally, Mlle. Ep 329329: (Baby-)Sitting With Becoming You

It might not be Olivia Colman's highest-profile streaming series this week, but Apple TV+'s Becoming You, which explores how the first 2000 days of our lives shape our futures, is perfectly on-brand: expensive, gorgeously shot, and not quiiiiite essential. Omar returns to the guest chair to talk about the series' limited concept of diversity; whether the show made him miss his kids' first years; and what a visual subtweet of Brooklyn parents looks like. After that, we moved on to Colman's other big gig in Around The Dial as Tara talked about The Crown (plus Candy Land, and alas, there's no crossover event there...yet) before the rest of us made stops at The Animal Rescue Show and SVU's odious season premiere. Ep 326326: Unpacking The Undoing or Too Many Butterflies

What if Big Little Lies, but in New York City and with no point? That's kind of how Emily and the regulars all felt about The Undoing, the latest Nicole Kidman-David E. Kelley collaboration for HBO; we admired the workmanship, while not really understanding what sets it apart from BLL (besides the quality of the wigs), or buying Kidman and Hugh Grant's chemistry. Will any of us be successfully cliff-hung into watching all six episodes? Later, we investigated Around The Dial with stops at Archer, the new Supermarket Sweep, Revolutionary Girl Utena, The Morning Show, City So Real, and The Queen's Gambit, before location-scouting "Domestic Survivor" for Don's Extra Credit. Emily hoped the signal-to-noise ratio of a fourth-season Halt And Catch Fire episode would be good enough to connect it to the Canon. Stath Lets Flats won, Quibi lost, and Game Time proved a severe insult to the brain (and other things). Quick, look hunted! It's an all-new Extra Hot Great.GUESTS👤 Emily YoshidaTOPICSLead Topic: 🔪 The Undoing Around The Dial: 🏹 Archer Around The Dial: 🛒 Supermarket Sweep Around The Dial: 👧 Revolutionary Girl Utena Around The Dial: 🌞 The Morning Show Around The Dial: 🏙 City So Real Extra Credit: 🤑 Domestic SurvivorThe Canon: 💾 Halt And Catch Fire Winner & Loser: 👍 Stath Lets Flats Winner & Loser: 👎 QuibiGame Time: 🧠 A Game For HoopleheadsNOTES🗒 Full episode notes can be found on the episode 326 page on ExtraHotGreat.com🐦 Emily Yoshida on Twitter👓 Emily's Hugh Grant profile from when he was shooting The Undoing🧺 Tara on the premiere of The Conners vs. other quarantine-era shows, at Primetimer🎧 The Film Cast (fka Slashfilmcast)🌃 The Night Call podcast🔪 Kartemquin best bets on Best Evidence

Ep 325325: Are We Living For Someone Has To Die?

Netflix's new import is a miniseries set in Franco-era Spain and revolving around a just-returned college grad and his Mexican ballerino friend. How does Lázaro's arrival tear the community apart (with lust)? Will Ellis joins us to talk about it! Around The Dial takes us through Social Distance, The Conners, Selling Sunset, Australia's Next Top Model, and HBO's A West Wing Special. Will presents Naomi Campbell's visit to The Tyra Banks Show for induction to The Canon; then after naming the week's Winner and Loser, we close things up with a Game Time that has spirit(s). Ep 324324: The Right Stuff May Not Have...Well, You Know

Disney+ and NatGeo decided to remake beloved '80s Mercury-astronauts epic (and earlier Tom Wolfe book) The Right Stuff as a series...and Adam Moussa decided to talk about it with us, a choice he may regret, because the four of us struggled to care. We struggled even to tell various astronauts apart, even, when we weren't wondering why this needed to be made, whether we should recommend For All Mankind instead, and where various actors would be in the Twink Taxonomy. Then we splashed down into Around The Dial with stops at Connecting, The Good Wife, Dark Side Of The Ring, and Rise Of Empires: Ottoman, we ordered some bangers and Smash with a Canon presentation on RuPaul's Drag Race UK. AppleTV+ won, Max Ehrich was a giant loser, and we were absolutely horrified by the wordplay in Game Time. Ep 323323: Doing A Tight Five On The Comedy Store

Showtime's latest docuseries is a deep (maybe too deep) dive on L.A. comedy club The Comedy Store, and first-time guest Brandi Brown -- herself a comic -- is joining us to talk about it! Around The Dial takes us through Emily In Paris, Polar Bear's Café, and Paramount's doc I Am Richard Pryor. CoreyAH challenges us to cast the Hallmark Christmas movies of tomorrow, today! Then, after her successful pitch of "Senegal," Françoise goes back to the Parts Unknown well to pitch us the "Houston" episode. We crown the week's Winner and Loser; then it's on to a Game Time that takes place in front of an unadorned brick wall. Join us -- but just so you know, there's a two-drink minimum! Ep 322322: Should You Search For Utopia?

We're thrilled Devindra could step over from Engadget and Slashfilm to talk to us about Utopia, Gillian Flynn's reimagining of a belovedly culty UK original. Sarah was less thrilled by the show itself, which she's probably bailing on after only two episodes, but the rest of the panel had good things to say about the story, the acting (especially John Cusack), and how fundamentally weird it is that Amazon chose to release Utopia anyway during All Of This. After a trip Around The Dial with Enola Holmes, Julie And The Phantoms, The Legend Of Korra, 30 For 30's new Oscar Pistorius deep-dive, and Dave's long-awaited Cobra Kai review, we took the correct train to Coney Island for Whitney's Canon presentation on the Mr. Robot pilot. Ep 320320: Zooming In On Home-Shot Reality TV

Reality-TV vet Andy Dehnart has seen a LOT of unscripted crap in his decades in the field, so we're glad he brought his expertise to our discussion of this unprecedented time in the genre's history: the home-shot, socially-distanced versions/spin-offs of some of our old "favorites," plus some new DIY unscripted stuff tailored to pandemic "set" safety. We talked about the challenges facing reality competitions in the Zoom-show era, then drilled down on a few specific shows like Dr. Pimple Popper: Before The Pop, Ghosted: Love Gone Missing, Design At Your Door, and Amy Schumer Learns To Cook. What works for these shows and what doesn't? What innovations -- or filler-busters -- should they keep when quarantine's over? Later, we went Around The Dial with Challenger: The Final Flight, Get Organized With The Home Edit, 16 And Recovering, and The Great Pottery Throw Down, and Tara shared a Tiny Tessitoriumph. We petitioned a reality-competition court to overthrow legendary injustices in the day's Extra Credit, and Andy argued to OUR jury that the first-season Survivor finale acquitted itself well enough to join the Canon. Sam Elliott won, the English language lost, and every night is Saturday night at Game Time. We're off this week but we've glued together three listener-suggested topics from our Patreon supporter bonus podcast Extra Extra Hot Great. EEHG 055: Series Starter Kits Nicole tasked us: Each of you pick a show and then give your 5 most essential or favorite episodes from that show and discuss why they are in your top five. EEHG 059: The Can'tnon Seth White figured since this feed is a little looser than EHG Prime, that we should talk about our favourite episodes of a show that, for some reason, would never make it into The Canon and why they have that connection. EEHG 064: Three With Mustard With theaters temporarily shuttered, diction and pronunciation in television is more important than ever. Ep 317317: Appraising Lifetime's Ruthless Realtor

Podcaster and Lifetime-movie-ologist Brandon is going deep on not just Ruthless Realtor (we would give you a plot summary, but it's...that, with a dash of Bad Ronald) but the evolution of Lifetime movies and the cultural anxieties they reflect; whether we'd ghost a weirdo who brought us a brisket; and why nobody seems to get a second take, or any direction. Then we staged an Around The Dial with stops at Love In The Time Of Corona, vintage Amazing Race, and Below Deck Med before Doug made an animated Canon case for Avatar: The Last Airbender's Empire Strikes Back episode.
